Crystals have became synonymous with the New Age philosophy. Included within this category are clear and colored quartz as well as semi-precious and precious stones. Since the 1980's such stones have been used as amulets and talismans possessing reputed healing and magical properties. Although such paranormal properties have not been scientifically proven those using the stones firmly believe that these properties are caused by the stones emitting vibrations.

The modern belief in crystal power is a reassurance of an ancient belief. Past civilizations valued crystals for their alleged protective powers against disease, bad luck, evil, and sorcery; and for their physical and mental healing powers. Crystals were worn as amulets and in breastplates by ancient people. European nobility, especially during the Middle Ages, wore crystals to ward off the plague. The stones are used against bad dreams, dissolve enchantments, and were mediums for magical visions. (see Divination) It was even believed that bruising crystals with honey would fill breasts with milk.

Presently crystals are worn as jewelry in pendants and rings, and even carried in small pouches as in ancient times. They are placed around the home and office, and crushed or soaked in water for gem elixirs. The benefits of using crystals are said to be the alleviation of stress, stimulation of creativity, enhancement of dreams, and the awakening of the psychic powers and higher consciousness. In some types of healing therapy crystals are laid out in particular forms on the chakra points and energy meridians of the human body. In alternative medicine they are used on animals as well as humans.

Crystals are used in the work of the occult and magic too. In divination they may be cast in lots or selected. Also, they are used in crystalomancy and meditation.

Some crystal enthusiasts believe certain stones such as clear quartz can be "programmed" to perform certain functions. There are certain procedures for such programming, one is to "clear" the stones by immersing them in salt, then exposing them to sunlight, then "programming" the stones through meditation or concentration. Some stones are classified as "double-terminated" or having points at both ends, and are claimed to be stronger in mystical powers.

CHARGING YOUR CRYSTALS:

Charging a crystal empowers the crystal to aim its energies toward a particular goal or function. Before you begin to charge your crystal, it is a good idea to simply spend a little time with it so it will be able to function more compatibly with the processes in your body which will lead you to your goal. Charging can be done by either ritual or non-ritual situations. Although the ritual charging may be more formal, the procedures are really the same. Before beginning the charging process, make sure that the purpose you have in mind for the crystal will have no result that harms anyone. Then pray to the God, Goddess or Spirit to aid you in your work and assist you in communicating with the crystal. While holding the crystal in your hands, clearly visualize the goal of your use for this crystal. You might even project your image of the goal into the crystal itself. Maintain contact with the crystal while visually it achieving its purpose for as long as you are able, or until the crystal reflects the goal back to you. Once you feel the energy of your goal reflected back to you, you are ready to use the crystal to help you achieve your goal.

Cleaning Your Crystals:

Before you use a crystal that you have chosen (or that has chosen you), it is important that you clean it. Everyone who has previously touched your crystal has left a little bit of their energy on it. While not usually strong enough to prevent the crystal's own energies from getting to you, these energy deposits may reduce the ability of a crystal to "take a charge."
It is also important to clean a crystal after you have used it for a particular purpose. Crystals get tired just like the rest of us do, and they are as rejuvenated by cleaning as we are when we take a bath after a long day at work.
There are several ways to clean a crystal. When doing any of them, be sure to visualize all negative energies being taken away from the crystal and it being restored to its fullest strength and vitality. Keep in mind that crystals set in jewelry may do better with some techniques - like bathing, visualization and other stronger techniques like grounding or smudging.

WAYS TO CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS:

VISUALIZING:

When you need to clean a crystal in a hurry, this is the way to do it. Ground and center yourself. Visualize Earth energy coming through your feet, and root chakra and Light energy coming down through your crown chakra. Have the two energies flow up and down your spine and then flow down your arms and into your hands. Hold the crystal in your hands and visualize the energies from your hands flowing into the crystal and transmuting all negative energies into positive ones. Do this until the crystal feels clean and "full," and the cleaning process is complete.


SMUDGING:

Smudging uses the elements of fire and water, with the energies of the herb burned, to cleanse and rejuvenate the crystal. Sage is the herb most commonly used. The sage is lit, and the crystal is passed through the smoke. The technique works well with "sturdy" stones, but should be avoided with clear, faceted stones or stones set in jewelry.


SUNNING or MOONING:

You can also clean a crystal by putting it on a window sill and allowing it to spend some time with the Sun and Moon energies. You might have a preference of Sun or Moon depending on the purpose for which you will use the crystal, but either or both with work for general cleansing and rejuvenation. Do keep in mind that some stones, like rose quartz will fade if they are exposed to direct sunlight for very long. The length of time you leave them out is up to you, and, of course, the crystal in question.


GROUNDING or EARTH METHOD:

There are several different ways to clean a crystal by grounding. The easiest way is to bury the crystal in the Earth, either outside, in the ground, or inside, in the soil around a potted plant. If you choose outside, make sure you remember where you put the crystal! If you choose the inside, make sure the plant is healthy so the crystal doesn't spend its time trying to heal the plant when it is supposed to be resting and recharging. You can also ground a crystal by putting it on a bed of sea salt or a clear quartz cluster, sea salt is one of my favorites!


ESSENTIAL OILS:

The focus here is on particular oils that have cleaning/clearing properties. The most economical method for using oils is to place crystals in a container, fill it with filtered water as you would for the salt water method, and put a drop or two of essential oil into the water. Lemon: This has a purifying effect and, on a practical level, cuts grease. Juniper: Like juniper in a smudge stick, juniper oil has the ability to help release any negative vibrations. Lavender: If you've been doing any kind of intense emotional work with your crystals, lavender oil has a calming and balancing effect. Put some on yourself, too. The previous methods can work well for large quantities of crystals. The following methods are better for individual crystals or small quantities of small crystals.


SAGE TEA:

Take fresh sage if available and brew a pot of light tea; allow it to cool. Place your crystals in a bowl (use glass if possible) and pour the cooled tea over them. If you want, leave them in the sage tea overnight. Then remove them and rinse with clean, pure water. Since there are chemicals in most water systems you may prefer to use a gallon of distilled water. If you can safely place crystals outside for nature to cleanse that is perfect, though you'll need to be able to distinguish which stones cleanse best by moonlight and which stones cleanse best by solar.


REIKI:

Using Reiki itself or in combination with visualization (view above) can be effective in clearing your crystals. If you're Reiki Level I hold the crystal in your hand and simply Reiki it. If you're Reiki II you can also draw the mental/emotional symbol over your crystals.

USING YOUR CRYSTALS:

HEALER:

Crystals can be used in ritual, folk magick or healing meditation, and as touchstones or decorations. Be creative in your use of crystals. If you are an Earth-centered person, crystals may be amongst the most powerful tools you can use. They may be used by a trained healer (or yourself), who places the crystals on particular energy centers on the body in order to achieve balance and healing in the etheric body (essentially, the aura) of an individual. These crystal "layouts" may use a number of different types of crystals, which are often placed on or near the Chakras or energy meridians of the person seeking healing.


CLEANER:

Quartz or Amethyst clusters are often charged to clean the energies of the environment in which they are placed. Black Tourmine (listed above) is used for the purpose also, because it cleans the energies it encounters and returns them, purified, back into the environment. Crystal points may also be empowered for use in aura grooming.


HELPER:

A helper crystal may also be worn, carried, or placed in the environment. It is instructed to lend its energies to the user as the user works to pursue specific goals through some sort of activity.


REMINDER:

A crystal charged as a reminder for one to perform an action or remember a particular idea may be worn or carried by the user or placed in the environment in which it is likely to be most needed.


MEDITATION AID:

Crystals are often used as aids to and focuses for meditation. If you have a particular need or problem on which you need to meditate, select a crystal that relates to that need or problem.


AMULET:

An amulet is worn or carried to protect the user from specific energies. An amulet would likely be most effective if charged during the Waning or Dark Moon.


TALISMAN:

A talisman is a charm worn or carried by the user to attract specific energies. A talisman would likely be most effective if charged during the Waxing or Full Moon.


CHARGER:

A crystal may be charged to charge other crystals. A Clear Quartz cluster is most commonly used for this purpose. Crystal points may also be charged for directing a specific type of energy into a person, place, or thing.


DIVINATORY TOOL:

Crystals can be used in a way similar to runes or cards. One or more crystals are drawn from a collection, or a layout is done, and the interpretation is done based on the stones chosen and/or the position of the stones in the layout.
