Quote:
The Gargoyles (1) : Even when you thought you’d seen the last of them, it seems like you’re never really in the clear. A while back, there was an infestation of awful gargoyle creatures–and while every Star Festival had its fair share of oddities, this one seems to have introduced a permanent infestation upon the city. Maybe you see them perched on the roof, or hiding in the shadows, but not all of these grotesque creatures are satisfied with just escaping their interdimensional prison–some of them still have a bone to pick. They seem stony; some of them will watch with a penetrative gaze and never strike to attack, but some of them will dive down to target anyone who gets too close. The monsters come in an array of sizes and shapes, but they are no more than half the size of their target. Their goal is uncertain, but they will crumble into a pile of rocks and dust if struck hard enough.

Around this time of year, every year, they came. And no matter what anyone did, they could not be stopped from coming back...

But that wouldn't stop Caliban from attempting to break them anyway!

It was what he had powered up for tonight and he wasn't going to let them get away with hurting people! Or existing but mostly the former. He had found his way into one of the more structurally-sound abandoned buildings and he could hear the flap of wings around him.

Was this a stupid idea? Incredibly so. But he had a bone to pick with these creatures and he wasn't going to let them get away with it!

More than anything she had been driven towards the sensation of a nearby Order signature, although it felt like one capable of taking care of itself. Still, it was good to check in on these things, especially since the location suggested that perhaps the stranger had been on the trail of something specific.

Joy, however, had not had Caliban's long experience, and if she heard wings overhead, she quite reasonably assumed it was bats or pigeons. She had no notion of stirring up any malicious thing lurking - no notion of what she might be walking into at all - and therefore she called out, quietly but still enough to carry: "Need any help in here?"

Caliban couldn't help but flinch at the unexpected voice, having been totally distracted with the enemy. He thought he heard more fluttering, but it seemed to be lessening a bit?

Usually that was a bad thing...

But he turned to the Knight who was now here. He nodded to her. "If you're willing. It seems that more of the gargoyles are making camp around here and I thought I might be able to do something about it." He took a quick look up. Silence. Now that wasn't good.

"Seems like they're up to something. I'll take any help I can get." Unless you were an Agent. He didn't want help from them. "Far too much experience with these things..." He muttered to himself, taking a look up again before something managed to hit the back of his shoulder, making him take a step forward.

They were on the attack now!

ASPECT OF EARTH: As upholders of virtue, Earth Knights have a saintly presence and seem to be always followed by sunlight, even at night. They have increased sensitivity to movements around them, and can always tell when someone is trying to sneak up on them -- which means there is no advantage to fighting them any way but honorably.

"Gargoyles?"

It could at least be said for Joy that she had learned enough to act while speaking, instead of waiting for the talking to be done. It meant that she was already wheeling towards some movement in the dark as she said it, her tone alarmed and also, it must be said, exasperated.

The whip was in her hand, and there was a sudden sensation of vague light around her - nothing to actually illuminate the place, but an abstract sense of sanctity that was like some ineffable halo around her. A second later she nipped neatly out of the way of an encroaching shadow from above.

"Well, tell me what your experiences are, quick," she said, snapping the whip somewhat blindly into the air with a gunshot crack that failed to hit anything at all. "And I'll try to be useful."

Caliban was definitely thankful for the help that this Knight was willing to provide. "They're as strong as stone, so you can't just punch them regularly, but with our powers and your weapon, if we hit their weak spots, such as elbows, knees, whatever, they should just crumble. Unfortunately I run into them every year." He said before he saw a couple of gargoyles heading straight for him.

"Seal Matrix!" He said before he quickly hit one gargoyle and then the other causing the both of them to freeze before hitting the ground and breaking apart. He was lucky that the attack protected his hand because if it didn't, then it would at the very least have been cut open from the force.

The mention that they were basically made of stone had her abandoning her original plan of letting Pal out to play, thinking it might be fun to watch the Summons catching them out of the air but also worried about how one got dental care for a magical monster dog with a chipped tooth.

She opted, instead, for the old fallback of her weapon's embedded spell, snapping the whip again, with more accuracy this time, and unleashing a lance-shaped bolt of light that caught one squarely in the chest and caused a rain of debris.

"I'm going to have Gargoyle guts in my hair," she said, somewhat distraught. "Where do they come from?"

"At least it's just stone instead of... organic." He didn't finish his sentence as he didn't want to think about these things actually having soft insides. He saw some more flying around up above. Either waiting for an opening to all strike at once, or coming in one by one. Neither was a fun idea.

"I wish I could tell you, but I have no idea. The first time I ran into one was during the winter and they just keep appearing, at least smaller, since." He said, dodging another one that had decided to detach from the group in an attempt to strike. "I would go to the source of all of it if I knew. ...With help." He added. Sure, he thought he could take on a smaller group by himself, but he was sure to be overwhelmed at the nest or whatever it was these things came from.

More swooped down and he used his power again, this time taking down three of them, but missing the 4th which managed to hit him slightly in the shoulder. "I think I underestimated this group."

"Well, if you ever figure it out, give me a yell," she said somewhat grimly, making an attempt to pick off that fourth one with a lash of her whip, which sang out sounding inexplicably more sinister than it had seconds before as she channeled its more powerful magic, landing a tidy blow on the assailing gargoyle. "I have a horrible suspicion these things could swoop down and pick up a dog if they wanted, and it's bad enough being paranoid about coyotes."

"Yeah, even Mauvians might have a bit of trouble with these." He replied, taking another look around and finally seeing one gargoyle that seemed to be larger than the rest. "I think we finally drew out it's leader." Whether or not it would come forth to attack them at this point was unclear. It was still well hidden, but it's head appeared to be moving, as though watching the two of them.

He looked at Joy. "Think you can get it with that whip? My Attacks are only good for close combat." It had both it's advantages and disadvantages, so if he did want to attack anything far away, he usually had to find something in the area around him to lob at whatever was his target. "If you can get it close to me, I think I can finish it in one hit." He hoped. He knew his eternal magic was powerful and he had fought these things before, but one never knew if there would be something different each time they fought.

"Oh boy," she said drily. "I've been doing target practice and everything. Let's see if it's done any good. Watch your head."

She paused, hefting the whip and watching the circling shadow before, finally, snapping the whip as she'd been teaching herself to do, the end unfurling and unleashing another bolt of light, which slammed into the gargoyle, bringing it to the ground nearer to this unforeseen ally.

It must be said that after she had done this, she quite nimbly nipped further away from it, to let him deal with it instead. Charitably, one might assume she was giving him the opportunity and not simply choosing not to put herself into harm's way.

Charitably.

He was glad that the Knight had managed to take the gargoyle down and quickly ran towards it. "Watch out, I'm not sure how this thing is going to be obliterated." He hoped it was just going to be the cracking of stone and falling, but again these could be new gargoyles so he just hoped that they didn't explode due to the pressure they would receive.

Once he was right next to it and before it could get up he loudly said, "Seal Impression!" And struck the gargoyle straight in the middle of it's chest.

It seemed with the light strike and his magic that it had done enough to the gargoyle to make it break apart. Luckily without flying everywhere.

With their leader gone the rest of the gargoyles started to filter out and Caliban let out a sigh. "Hopefully we don't see these during the winter." He muttered to himself before he turned towards the Knight. "Thanks for the help. I know I shouldn't have run in here alone." But he had a vendetta. "I'm Caliban by the way. I don't think we've met." He said with a nod. "I think we can get out of here now though."

"If I yell at you for running in alone I'd be a hypocrite," she said equably, putting out a hand to shake his even as she moved back towards the open air, her palm glowing the color of sunlight in the shadows. She did not thank him, but maybe her gratitude was just of a nonverbal variety. "Joyeuse Garde. Now I know to keep an eye out for these godforsaken things. Pleasure doing business with you," she added, with a little laugh.

He couldn't help but chuckle at her words. "Well then, until next time Joyeuse Garde." He said with a nod before turning in the direction of his apartment. Even if it hadn't been a long battle, it was after work and so he felt quite tired now.

"Give me a call or message or whatever if you need me to return the favor!" He said, throwing up his hand in a good-bye waving before moving out of the building and into the night.
