The Gameboard

Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

That's okay.

Even if you know better than to pick it up, all you have to do is look at it, and it's ensnared you. Again.

It looks like a normal die in terms of shape, and each side has a gilded number, one through six, carved into it. The most interesting part of it all is that the dice seems to be made of old, stained wood with fossilized opal throughout the whole piece. Something about it called to you, and now that it has your attention, a harsh wind slams into you. Darkness falls all around you–and then, slowly, a path illuminates. It’s black all around you; there’s no light, but you can see clearly marked spaces.

A line of squares unwind in front of you, each clearly marked.

You can’t see anything around you, can’t feel anything else–just the gameboard. And the die. Whether its in your hand or on the ground where you left it, it's there with you.

Even if you don’t recognize the game, you don’t really need instructions to know how to play–you have a die, and you have a path. In the distance, you can barely make out a dark wooden platform at the end of the path, but it seems to have the same fossilized opal inlay as the die–and pretty golden symbols along the rim.

You can’t step out of your square. Trying to leave the gameboard results in you walking to an invisible barrier and it feels like slamming into a glass wall. You cannot leave your space–unless the die says you can. If you want to get out of here, you’re going to have to roll your way there–but it isn’t so easy.

Strange gold markings differ from one square to the next. There’s no telling what they mean–you’re going to have to land on them to find out.

Though, judging by the tension in the air, it’s probably not going to be anything good.

Another night, another patrol alone. Sailor Clara really wished he could find more White Moon Senshi or even knights of some sort to patrol with. Even though he had met a few, he didn’t want to be an imposition by trying to contact them every night to see if they would go out patrolling with him. Furthermore, he still had trouble getting used to being around people in his senshi outfit when his skirt was so embarrassingly short. He didn’t care how appropriate it was for the Senshi of Embarrassment; it drove him crazy. Not to mention it was extremely cold and getting colder now that the weather was cooling down for autumn.

“WHOA!!”

Clara all but screamed as his high heels slipped on something he originally thought was a pebble and he went down, landing hard on his unprotected butt. It was almost like he had triggered a booby trap, though, because by the time he had landed, everything around him had faded to black. He even wondered if he’d fallen into a manhole or the like because of how pitch dark it was.

Space 0:
You have arrived here; nothing happens until you roll your die.

As he tried to get his eyes to adjust to the dark, a soft glow began to illuminate the ground in front of him. Still on the floor, he watched a winding path of marked squares begin to light up slowly, one by one, all the way to a platform that was barely visible in the distance. The light from the path bounced off the opal inlay of the platform, revealing that it was made of the same material as the die that Clara looked over and saw on the ground next to him. So that had been what he had slipped on. Had slipping on it been what had triggered not only his fall, but his sudden transportation to that strange place?

There was nothing else but the path and platform no matter where he looked. When he tried to step forward, he was met with a barrier-like wall that felt as solid and hard as glass. The path seemed to invite him to journey down it, so why couldn’t he even take one step onto the next square? He picked up the die and stared at it. Was this a giant gameboard and he was a game piece? Could he only move if he rolled the die and moved the number of spaces it dictated?

Wondering whose sick, twisted idea of a game this was, Clara sighed deeply and attempted to toss the die, curious to see what its first number would be and if he would be able to move from the spot he was stuck on.

Space 2:
Something pale and ghostly slams into your back; you don’t see it, but it feels like it’s trying to push you forward–or to the side, or off the path. Thankfully, the magical glass walls stop you from going too far, but this is jarring–and might hurt.

Two wasn’t very many spaces to move, but at least it was something. Glad to get off the square he’d been stuck on, Clara moved forward two spaces – only to find himself slammed into by a sudden force. He couldn’t see what it was, since when he looked behind him, there didn’t seem to be anything there. But even though he was pushed up against the barrier of the space he was on, the force behind him wouldn’t let up.

Feeling himself crushed between two invisible forces, Clara tried to push against one to shove back the other, using the square barrier – since it was unmoving – as leverage against the pushing force, but to little avail. Still, there was enough give for him to reach down and grab the die in order to roll it so he could move to the next square and finally stop being shoved.

Space 6:
You hear a shrill, humming noise; it sounds almost like something is firing past you–and sometimes, you even feel a sharp burst of air, like something has just missed you. Maybe, even, it does get a slice out of you. Sharp, bladelike threads seem to string up around you; you’d best be careful not to get cut on any of them between now and your next dice roll.

As soon as Sailor Clara's die revealed a four, the invisible barrier that the silver-haired senshi was pressed up against instantly seemed to disappear. This caused him to fall forward onto the next space on his hands and knees. Annoyed but relieved, he quickly picked himself up and brushed himself off as he hurried forward the full number of spaces he was allowed to advance. Once he got to the space marked space 6, he found himself face with a new danger.

Something whizzed past him and he tried to dodge out of the way, but he didn't see anything go by; only heard it. Then there was another something, but this time he felt the sharp burst of air that it produced against his arm as it passed him. Was that...thread...? They were so thin that they were hard to see at first and Clara wasn't sure where they were coming from. However, he didn't want to be caught up in them or cut by them, especially since more seemed to be appearing with each second that passed, so he quickly tried to roll his die with as little movement as necessary to do so.

Space 9:
The smell of saltwater fills the air, and you can hear the water lapping against the shore. You hear boards creaking, and bells in the distance. And then, a song. Haunting. Ghostly, and calling you. For a second, you fall in love. And then, water fills your lungs. You’re choking, you can’t breathe. The song is loud and seems to caress you, even as a wet chill gathers in your square. Scaly hands reach for you, you gently caressing, and try to lure you into an endless sleep.

Three spaces was less than four, but it was still a number of spaces to move forward, so Clara was grateful as he avoided whatever threads he could see in his attempt to advance to the next space. To his surprise, the scent of seawater hit him on the 9th space and he stopped, wondering what secrets that particular space held. As before, he couldn't see anything at first, but enough of his other senses were engaged that he could almost get a sense of being transported somewhere near or in the ocean.

There was the subtle sound of water lapping lightly against a shoreline alongside the creak of boards on what might have been a wooden boat or ship. There were even bells in the distance like the bell from a ship in distress, perhaps. Clara began to grow alarmed. It didn't help when he began to hear a haunting song, even as music was perhaps the thing he loved most in the world, because it foretold of sirens and the danger they brought to unwary sailors. Before Clara had time to plug his ears, he heard the voices singing the song calling to him and then he felt the familiar feeling of being in love.

That emotional feeling was abruptly followed by the very physical feeling of his lungs being rapidly filled with water. Clara coughed and choked, his body attempting to expel the liquid filling his lungs, but it was happening to fast and he suddenly couldn't inhale or breathe any longer. The siren song still filled his ears, but as unconsciousness started to press in, he was almost beyond hearing it or feeling the way it seemed to caress his heart and soul. He could almost feel the caresses as physical touches from scaly hands...

Just as he thought he was going to pass out forever, Clara remembered the die in his hand and managed to release his grip on it. It dropped to the floor and rolled a little before stopping on a single number.

Space 12:
The smell of smoke is in the air. You can’t see what’s burning, but you can hear distant screams, and–carnival music? It feels like people are running past you, and the air fills with panic and alarm–but there’s nowhere for you to go, and the smoke is so thick. You’d better roll quickly so you can get out of here.

Just as Clara managed to cough and hack up the majority of the water in his lungs, the senshi stepped onto the 12th space and smoke seemed to rapidly fill his lungs instead as if replacing the water that had just been there. The smoke was also thick around him, making it hard for him to see what was burning enough to create the smoke in the first place. He heard screaming in the distance despite knowing that beyond his little square of a space, there likely wouldn't have been anything there; at least nothing to see. It was likely an auditory hallucination, but it still struck him with an arrow of dread as he imagined a fire consuming his home and the screams belonging to the members of his family; particularly his beloved sisters.

Either the smoke stinging his eyes or the thought of his sisters in peril or a combination of both caused Clara's gaze to blur with tears. He coughed and choked some more, hunching low to the ground to avoid the worst of the smoke as best he could. The sound of carnival music distracted him from his thoughts of his family back in Japan and he realized he was probably overreacting. The 12th space probably had a particular scene it was trying to paint in his mind and it likely had nothing to do with his home or family. At least he could rest easy about that.

Though he vaguely got the sense of people running past him, Clara was able to ignore them as well as the tension and alarm in the atmosphere. What he couldn't ignore was the smoke that was growing denser by the second, so he gave his die a little toss and watched it roll again until it landed on the next number of spaces he would be allowed to move.

Space 14:
The ground is sticky. You land on this and immediately dip, as though you’ve stepped on a trampoline. Close inspection reveals that you are standing on an intricately woven web–and your shoes are stuck. And something is skittering just on the horizon.

Once out of the smoke space, the White Moon Senshi immediately discovered that the floor of the 14th space was sticky. Not only was it sticky, but it didn't seem to be completely solid as it dipped from under his weight after he took his first step onto it. Clara yelped in alarm as the unexpected dip caused him to lose his balance and fall forward onto what felt as springy as a sticky trampoline. As he fell face-forward, he noticed the reason why the space was so different than all the others. He was standing on an intricately-woven giant sticky web rather than solid ground. What was worse that he thought he saw something moving on the web just out the corner of his eye. Its vibrations reached him through the web that they both were supported by.

Eyes widening with alarm, Clara quickly tossed his die up into the air and prayed it would be caught by the sticky web in a manner that would reveal a number for him to move forward with. To his immense relief, it did.

Space 18:
You smell something poison, something noxious. You pass through a haze of strange, green gas as you enter the square, but it fades after a few seconds. You feel cold. You feel empty. You start to decay. Maybe a part of you knows it’s an illusion, but in that split second when your body feels like it might go limp and when you look at your hand and see skin melting. You see bone. You’d best roll the dice so you don’t wind up a skeleton prop for the next player.

With each space seemingly worse than the last, Clara became terrified of what awaited him on the 18th space. Sure, there were only two spaces left for him to reach the end and, hopefully, freedom. However, if he kept rolling small numbers, he would be forced to suffer more atrocities first. It was difficult not to lose heart when he had already felt like he'd nearly encountered death in so many ways.

The 18th space seemed fine at first...except for the noxious smell in the air. The strange curtain of green gas he had to pass through to get to the space probably had something to do with it, but he hadn't seen or smelled it until he had already stepped through it. It appeared to fade after a few seconds, but that didn't fool Clara into believing its damage hadn't been done.

Sure enough, the senshi soon began to feel cold and then empty. He wondered if that was what dying felt like before witnessing his exhausted body start to melt like candle wax. Even as he watched, his skin and muscle dripped off his hand until his bone was exposed. Horrified, he used his good hand to drop his die again before he found himself unable to do that, even. The die rolled and slowly came to a halt.
alright, there's a few things that contribute to zOMG being so unpopular, even though I love it. 1. It picked the worst community to be on. Although zOMG's forum-goers are ok people, gaia is full of non-gamer prep types of girls (no offense to girls that play this, you guys are cool) who only care about their avis and forums, and underage b& boys (aka most noobs) who use 8 attack rings and don't understand the game mechanics. This not only makes it unpopular, but makes finding good crews hard. Despite this being a "casual MMO", most of gaia still doesn't get it. For this same reason, people like this only use this game to get gold. You can't get gold until you start being able to do SS runs so late in the game, and it's easier to just go and booty grab. 2. This game is incredibly short and lacking in content compared to other MMOs. Getting all 40 rings at CL 10 (the crowning achievement in this game) took me about 3 or 4 months of playing for around an hour a day. Getting the crowning achievement in another game (EI: level 70 in WoW). This game is like a dream game to me, but I've stopped playing it just because I sucked all the content out of it. tl;dr: the only way to improve this game is to move it to a different site and make it longer.
I don't see how moving to a different site would be all that advantageous; it seems the bigger problem would be offsite advertisement of zOMG! (rather than Gaia itself), not Gaia's demographic (which I don't think you've depicted accurately anyway). The content argument has been thoroughly proved irrelevant; we're seeking an immediate fix to enable the creation of new content. In short, I don't think either of your "suggestions" are even relevant to the situation at hand...
