Witty Punching Bag

Patrol nights were always a toss-up when it came to productivity, particularly when he didn't make any plans for anything besides "run into chaos" and "don't die" or something along those lines. Tonight, though, was thankfully a planned meeting.

Chillingham had reached out. Something about fight training, which...

Well. He was happy to help, but that didn't mean he could offer her a whole lot. He was garbage as fighting, but he must have been doing alright considering he was still alive and kicking, so.

Here he was, fingers absently tapping on his horn while he waited for her to arrive.

With a slight bounce in each step, Chillingham swung her lantern lightly at her side as she made her way over for this little training meeting. Ever since the angry sky lightning thing, she knew she needed to find out more about things and maybe get a bit better at thinking things through. Especially if she wanted to keep on the up and up, so her brother would continue to let her go out and do the magic thing.

Smiling as she noticed the taller man, she waved. “Oi! I hope everything’s been okay lately for you!” Giving him a once-over, he looked mostly okay, at least from what she could tell. Some people apparently have these cool-looking snake lightning scars, but she knew that would have been the absolute end of things if she’d gotten hit by it.

“Better to shake it out with you than with those gross creatures.” Sticking her tongue out slightly as she remembered the vile and icky chicken-like thing, she would rather do math homework than touch one of those again.

Spotting the younger knight, he nodded in response to her wave.

"Still here," he said with a little shrug, "so I guess I can't complain. You?" Like her, Kiringul gave her a once-over as she came closer, figuring she was probably okay considering what he saw but asking anyway. It was the polite thing to do, after all. Besides that, she was covered head to toe like he was. For all he knew, she was nursing severe bruises or something like that from some youma or agent encounter or something.

"Probably not wrong," he replied with a little nod. "The more practice we get with our magic, the better. Mine is some kinda buff for allies, but a distraction to enemies. I just gotta focus and blow into my horn." Kiringul nodded to Chillingham once more, this time at her lantern. "Yours?"

Shifting from one foot to the other to keep her energy moving, she was glad they were still around, even if she felt like he might not be as excited about things as she was. But she was sure it didn’t help with how his clothes were; she was sure she’d like something a little more magical and fancy than her own outfit, but from what she could tell, there wasn’t a way to bargain with Saturn or whichever planet things were set up with.

Remembering how things had been that first time, she smiled. “I remember from before! When everything had gone on super awesome when you helped out that first time.” But when she looked at her lantern, she pouted slightly at it.

“Something kind of creepy, but I haven’t tried it much yet. Isaiah mentioned something, but he kept crackin’ on about gross ghost and body stuff.” Shaking her head, she held it up a bit and swung it ahead as she focused. Those weird shadows cast out again, not that she knew what they did so far, but the action of swinging the lantern wasn’t new to her, considering how she had been hitting people with the thing before anyway.

He smirked.

"'Creepy' sounds about on par with the vibe I've always gotten from Saturn knights," he said, considering her lantern for a long moment. It reminded him a bit of Ein's. Chillingham's certainly fit the bill for a weapon belonging to Saturn well enough, though there was clearly room for it to grow into something more ominous and foreboding.

"But alright. Lemme give you that buff with my magic, and then you test your powers out on me?" He could maybe ask who this "Isaiah" person was later, after they finished up with their training session.

With a pout at the mention of creepy being a Saturn Knight vibe, Chillingham jangled the lantern a bit so the jack-o'-lantern would stare at him with its spooky face. But at least she’d know more about things after this, so she could maybe have a better idea of how it worked that wasn’t filled with specific sciency stuff or old-fashioned words she didn’t understand.

“Okay, I’m ready!” Taking just a step back, out of habit, since she didn’t want to hit him with the thing instead of using the magic, she held the stick of the lantern with both hands like a baseball bat and waited. Isaiah had said something about focusing, so she scrunched her face up a bit and nodded one more time to show she was ready.

Kiringul made a bit of a face at the jack-o'-lantern and took a few steps back as well, eyes shifting between the weapon and its wielder. It was probably the dad in him, but apparently he couldn't help but worry. It didn't escape him how young she seemed, both in looks and demeanor. There was a small comfort in knowing she wasn't quite alone in the city—sourpuss or not, her brother was around and seemed keen on looking after her. And that she was eager to learn about her magic was probably also a good sign.

He sighed as he took the horn up and lifted the mouthpiece to his lips, shoving the thoughts aside once more. On her cue, he took a deep breath, pulling his focus as he blew into his weapon.

Squire — Kiringul takes a deep breath and blows into the horn, however no sound comes directly out of it. Instead, the sound goes directly into the ears of anyone within a 10ft radius; the sound varies between listeners.

For opponents it causes the listener to become disoriented in some way (the sound and how it disorients the listener is up to the player) as their mind becomes lost in the vastness of cosmic eternity. It essentially renders them unable to focus as long as Kiringul is channeling his magic, and they can feel confused and dazed and out of place with their surroundings.

For allies it gives the listener a soothing sort of clarity, as though they have come out of a peaceful eternity, and allows them to focus better as long as Kiringul is channeling his magic. The sound has a maximum duration of 30 seconds.

Watching and listening, she fixed her grip on the lantern’s stick and moved as soon as she felt that wave of focus wash over her. It felt like it was helping, and as she swung the lantern this time, it cast shadows that moved as she focused.

Trying to take a step and move while doing it felt hard, but with Kiringul helping, it wasn’t impossible. Knowing that she didn’t have to stay put was a relief, as the shadows still moved and worked towards the other. It was definitely spooky, but at least it wasn’t a zombie or some gross sciencey experiment.

Quote:

Swinging her lantern, it casts shadows within the area of effect. Reaching and grabbing, the shadowy headless figures reach for enemies in the area. When they grab or pass through enemies the shadows bind them as long as the magic is being channeled. Contact leaves a character feeling icy cold, their body feeling as if death is looming or that they are being stalked by it, and can cause some pain or discomfort. It's up to the player how this translates to their character but there will be no lingering effects.

Range: 12 feet
Duration: 35 seconds

His eyes widened at the creepiness of what started coming toward him. Shadows lurching toward him, reaching as they went, seemingly led by the Saturn squire's lantern. He had to fight to keep himself from stepping back and away, convince himself that she wouldn't actually hurt him at the end of the day. She just needed to get a look at her own magic, maybe gain some small bit of understanding about it as she did.

Kiringul blew into his horn for as long as he was able to focus, but as soon as the shadows brushed his boots an ice cold sensation snaked up his spine and completely broke his focus. There was a brief but very real sense of being watched by an unknown predator of some kind, alongside a shock of pain. He winced from both and the horn slipped from his hand.

And then he made a "T" with his now free hands, calling time out.

"I don't envy the bad guys you touch with that thing," he said, looking over both shoulders to see if the feeling of being watched had been part of her magic, or if someone or something was actually watching them.

When the horn stopped, her focus started to slip a bit while she was mid-step and still moving. Dropping the lantern to the ground, she winced slightly at the loud clank it made when metal hit metal and pavement.

“Oops… Well, at least if the bad guys stop doing bad things, then that’s great!” Puffing up a bit as she put her hands on her hips. However, she was still slightly concerned and leaned forward a bit to look at them.

“Wonder if Bambi has spookier magic? But maybe that’s a sign to take a break for tonight. At least I know I can focus enough to get it to work!” A small triumph, considering things, but it made her happy enough either way.

Picking up her lantern, after apologizing to the pumpkin in it slightly, she looked it over and then sat down on one of the nearby benches. Pulling out her phone for a sec, she texted her brother letting her know she’d be on her way home soon.
