Keahi had the day off from his job at the weather station and today had good chances of seeing a storm cell with some really impressive cloud displays.
The weather had been crazy lately and it made him more than a bit excited. He had found an open field on the outskirts of the city and settled in with a camera on a tripod, his laptop and a small satellite. He'd invested in an old van and had a folding chair outside of it beside his equipment.
"Oh I hope we get at least a good shelf cloud, maybe a cloud roll."
He looked towards the sky where there were already some Altostratus clouds forming.

Valerie, or Val, as she was calling herself now had been wandering for some time. It was the first time she had really been able to do so... ever. There were no moments where one could just, take in the world on Velencya. And now that she was here, and in-between finding a job to fit into Earth and human culture, she was able to experience, well, life. And it was quite amazing to her. Everything on Velencya was artificial. All of this on Earth, while somewhat determined by humans, not on purpose however from what she had learned, was just the world being itself. She was still surprised however when she saw a... car? Was it? where she had been wandering, and a human who had set up some equipment. It made her very curious. She slowly walked over to the person, making sure that she would be ready for anything, but not hiding herself in any way. And when she finally got up to him and took a moment to look at everything, she finally asked, "What are you doing with all of this?"

Keahi had slipped into the van to put on some music to play form the loudspeaker he'd installed on it and when he come back out to sit down he'd noticed someone just kind of wandering.
He didn't think anything of it as he went about monitoring the storm and watching the clouds. He was lost in watching the clouds when she finally approached him and he paused looking owlishly for a moment, "Oh, Aloha!"
There was a moment as the question registered, "Huh, oh. I've set up to watch the storm cell that's starting to form to see if I can gather any data from it. The radar says this storm might have the perfect balance of a high and low pressure front meeting to produce at least some really nice cloud formations."
He glanced from her back to the storm and then back to her, "Do you live around here?" He asked curious if he was trespassing and hoping she wasn't mad at him. Besides, he really didn't know who owned this land out here and was ready to ask forgiveness if he was in fact trespassing.

Aloha? Must be some sort of greeting. Not English it seems. Will have to look it up on their, internet when I get back to my room. She thought to herself. "Why are you gathering the data?" She asked bluntly. She realized her mistake right away. "I'm sorry. I am just... curious as to why you are gathering information. But I understand if you don't want to tell me." She didn't want to offend him even if she was curious. Was it to be used in some way to help Earth? They didn't have to worry about naturally-occurring whether on their artificial world, so that was the only reason she could think of. She shook her head slowly. "No... I just was walking and ended up here. Should I not be walking around here?" She asked, wondering if she had done something wrong.

Keahi waved his hand as he went back to tending to his equipment, "Ah no need to be sorry. I'm studying storms to try and help predict them and perhaps save lives."
He didn't seem to think anything of the questions, "AH no it's not you shouldn't be walking here. It's sometimes I set up places thinking it's public grounds and it's owned by someone else. Sometimes they're cool with it and other times they want me off their land."
He hummed and looked towards the sky, "There's a few ways to tell a storm is coming asides from the smell of rain. There's trees that have leaves which turn upside down because they get more water that way."
There was a pause, "The clouds also, if you look at the way they've got a pattern, those are Altostratus clouds, they'll turn into storm clouds."

That was a worthy cause! They would probably have that job back on their homeworld if they actually had natural weather. She was curious about land ownership and how one was supposed to know what belonged to who. After all, she had quite easily walked all the way over here without encountering any warnings. It seemed she and this man were in the same boat in terms of knowing this time. "That is interesting!" She said, first taking a look at the trees and then the clouds. "So the clouds will change a certain way to be predictable then." It seemed even Earth nature had some rules it had to follow. "May I watch with you? I would like to see the clouds myself."

Storm grinned when she seemed interested in the weather. However, his head bobbled side to side while he thought about how to explain. "Soo, they're predictable to a point, there's sort of an educated guess work to weather. Which is why there's a lot of people who want to study it."
"Also sure~! Feel free to join me." Storm wasn't going to say no to anyone who wanted to learn.
He seemed to think, "But back to being predictable, larger storms like hurricanes are more predictable than say a tornado. Because they're so large and they spin out in the ocean before they come to land - if they land. We can use the cone of uncertainty to try and figure out who might need to be watching and ready to leave the area. But still surprises can happen. And what's what we want to lessen the chance of."
He glanced at his monitor. "Right now a cold and warm front are meeting to cause some unstable air that could produce some strong storms. We're far enough away and it seems to be tracking on a north easterly pattern so we should be okay to watch here. I don't think conditions are right for any tornado activity. But we might see some hail, feel free to take cover in the van if that happens."

She nodded, listening to him and sat down next to him, drawing her knees up but letting her arms stay on the ground. She was glad to be learning more about how this world worked and it was very nice to do it in a more relaxing way than having to officially go out and determine all of this. Perhaps they could harness the powers of storms somehow... No. Now wasn't the time to think about that. Their world may have been in danger of dying, but no one knew for how long or how to fix it, other than one possibility, but she wasn't even sure if that would work. "Thank you, I will if need be." She said when he offered her cover. "This is really quite interesting. These storms are quite powerful then I suppose, if one needs to leave the area." She looked at him. "But I bet they look very interesting as well!"

Keahi nodded as he adjusted the camera and looked over the rader when he looked back and nodded, "Yeah, they are very interesting. The sad part is they can be really powerful."
He pulled out a tablet and handed her, "There's people that storm chase professionally." He had some of the clips up, "You can watch those if you want. The storms in the clips range from just some hail to tornadoes."
He looked back towards the storm that was starting to form, "If you look you can see the clouds are starting to bubble and charge." He said after a bit watching the storm form and start to have lightning dance in the clouds. "I don't think this'll become anything crazy, the atmosphere isn't quite right. However, I'm sure you know lightning can still be dangerous on it own."
