So, Azalea was... Making some progress. Probably. Maybe. He had spent the better half of the last few hours inducing people to randomly fall asleep and hallucinate libraries so that was... Something. Maybe.

Also pretty dumb, in Arlen's opinion, but whatever.

Sailor of Libraries? What was he even supposed to do with that? His only ability he could figure out so far was making people tired! And most people probably didn't even need any help with that!

And even worse, his powers didn't even work right! He could never actually get them to activate when he needed them, which was shaping up to be one of the more obnoxious things about this whole scenario. And it wasn't like he needed the extra work, either. He was already plenty locked up with caring for Ye Bochord, so...

At this rate he was just irritated by the whole thing.

He huffed absently as he trudged along, tapping the end of his wand with an exhausted little shake of his head.

"Come on, you stupid thing... Just do what you're supposed to, for once..."

He should probably get home soon, anywho. Might be best to leave this Sailor-ing thing for tomorrow...

Jet had not intended to stop. Normally, he wouldn't have even bothered paying attention. A newly awakened Senshi fumbling around with magic he clearly didn't understand was not, on its own, enough to earn his attention. It was beneath him, really. Kind of tragic in a way, maybe, but hardly unusual.

But this one—

This one was so visibly, hopelessly at a loss that Jet found himself slowing anyway. He watched from a short distance, wondering if the Senshi even knew what an aura felt like, his expression smoothing into something comfortably neutral while amusement settled warmly in his chest. The poor thing looked like he'd been told to get on stage without a script, which was entertaining enough.

More surprising was the obvious lack of guidance. No Mauvian? No mentor? No one had bothered to explain even the basics? Jet was not sentimental about the White Moon, and he certainly wasn't inclined to feel pity for them. But he was, very briefly, astonished.

He stepped forward at last, shoes quiet against the pavement, aura only heavy enough to be vaguely dangerous rather than an immediate threat. His tone, when he spoke, was smooth. Easy. Charming in a way that did an excellent job of disguising just how entertained he really was.

"I don't think it's supposed to work like that," he hummed softly, letting the words settle like he was giving the Senshi a chance to save himself the embarrassment rather than making it obvious that it was rather pathetic.

"Didn't know one of those pens did anything but assist in a Senshi's transformation. Are you trying to use your magic? Interesting. At least you're persistent. I'll give you points for that."

He tilted his head curiously, all kind interest and patience in his posture, as if this was a perfectly ordinary conversation to have in the middle of the night with a stranger.

"You're new," he said.

It wasn't a question. And while there was no sharpness to the comment, nor any obvious mockery, there was still something about the softness of the observation that likely settled uncomfortably.

Arlen felt some dark, uncomfortable sensation settle over him like a fog, twisting his stomach and prickling his skin with gooseflesh.

What in the world...?

The feeling, he found, was followed by a voice, and the voice was closely followed by an entire person, who had been standing there and watching his frankly mortifying attempts of using magic for gods' know how long. He grimaced to himself at the very thought, and quickly straightened, offering a nervous sort of chuckle and a bashful wave.

"Oh! Ah... Is that was this thing is for? It looks kind of like a wand, so I guess I was just kind making assumptions? Guess that makes sense, though..."

He took a single step back. Wary. That was the best word he could imagine for the feeling that was ricocheting through him. He was wary of this stranger.

"Persistence is maybe one of my better traits," he replied, sounding a tad more unsure than he'd necessarily like, but whatever.

"And yeah. I'm a little new, I guess. Definitely not ah... Seasoned. Are you one of... Are you like me, then?" He asked, although something deep in his gut told him that the man was something of another side to his proverbial coin.

Bit not good, that would be, if he had to guess.

Jet's mouth curved into a small, indulgent smile at that.

Are you like me?

How astonishing. Had no one really explained any of this to him? No Mauvian, no partner, no run in with the enemy? The Senshi looked wary enough, at least. Something in him clearly understood that Jet was not quite safe, even if he might not have the words for why.

"No," Jet said smoothly. "Not exactly." He let the mystery settle for a moment, then tipped his head in a gesture that was almost friendly.

"It's a little impressive that no one's given you even the basics. You've just been left to figure this out by trial and error?" he hummed, his tone staying light, but there was something a little incredulous underneath.

"Jet," he introduced, offering nothing more than the name itself. He didn't miss the uncertainty in the other boy's posture, the cautious step back, the way his instinct was clearly trying to catch up with the new knowledge he was uncovering. Good. That might keep him alive a little longer.

Hopefully long enough to not be so pathetically boring.

"You can relax," Jet said, the words gentle enough to almost pass as kindness. "If I were here to kill you, we wouldn't still be discussing your henshin pen. If you want," he continued after a moment, "I can give you a few pointers. About magic. About the world you've apparently stumbled into." His smile sharpened just a little. "Enough, at least, to keep you from trying to use that like a wand again.

"Most of this sort of power doesn't respond well to force. It's usually more about focus. Intent. Learning what your magic actually wants from you," he said, his eyes narrowing slightly in thought. He was no Senshi, but he had plenty of experience with them. "From what little you've described, yours sounds like the sort people will underestimate until it's already working."

Jet held the Senshi's gaze, calm and faintly amused. "So," he continued, "would you like the short version, or are you committed to learning everything the difficult way?"

Arlen, if asked, would have been the first one to admit that the circumstances of his awakening were entirely his own fault.

After all, it was Arlen, not the poor magical cat he had met, that had turned tail like a coward and ran at the first mention of wars and magic and whatever---

Arlen may have loved fantasy and adventures, may have always wished to be the hero of his own story, but he knew himself well enough to know that he just... Wasn't cut out for that sort of thing. He was the last thing anyone would picture when thinking of a "magical girl" and he hadn't the smarts or coordination or tact to fight his own bedsheets most days, much less the forces of chaos.

"It's magic," Azalea sighed, shaking his head, "why can't it be considerate of what I want instead?"

It was a performative complaint, of course---he'd never seen magic work so simply as that in books, but still. Rather obnoxious, to be honest.

"Well, no offense, my guy, but if I didn't listen to the nice-lookin' cat, I kinda don't wanna listen to you---you're... Off," he said, ever blunt as always, "but thanks anywho. I like figuring things out on my own."

Debatable. And quite honestly, he could probably use the help right now, but it really did feel wrong to betray the perfectly nice little talking cat by not listening to him and instead listening to the weird stranger in the street. He made this bed, and all. Time for some lying in it.

"What brings you around here, though?"
