The Wishing Tree (1): A Destiny City Star Festival Tradition to be held every year; In Town Square, there is a beautiful tree with spreading branches. It is tall, but the lowest branches are easily reached. The city has decorated the tree with small, starlike ornaments and glistening lights. Thick leaves and beautiful purple flowers dangle from the branches, along with a myriad of different colored papers with handwritten wishes. Next to the tree is a stack of blank paper with twine attached, and a handwritten sign that explains:

Write your wish on a sheet of paper and tie it to the tree. Take one wish off the tree and do your best to grant it. When you have granted the wish, bury the paper in the park.

The papers are biodegradable and filled with seeds. There are no rules for wishing, but you are encouraged to wish for something vague enough that it can be interpreted in many ways so that it can be granted; you do not write your name on it, but it is encouraged to write something that doesn't wish for self gain, but rather something that can make the world a better place. Some wishes dangling from the tree already include things like "I wish there wasn't so much litter in the park," "I wish someone would clean the graffiti off the old historic buildings," and "I wish there were more volunteers at the shelter."

If you choose to use the Wishing Tree, what do you wish for? If your wish is private, you may write it on the paper and choose a spot in the park and bury it yourself instead of hanging it on the tree.

Ophilia observed the general hustle and bustle around her, cool and detached. There were dozens upon dozens of people buzzing around, chatting, taking pictures, just overall enjoying the festival. She was just standing there in an out of the way corner, eyeing it all and silently wondering why she was there at all. The chime of her phone, or rather the phone she ‘stole’ from Alex, reminded her of exactly why she was there. She was using this city run stunt to draw their little kitten deeper into the web. So she just needed to suck it up for a bit longer.

‘Have fun and don’t forget to make a wish!’ The text was banal but it was better than no text at all, besides this was still a far cry from just a few days ago where their text exchanges mostly consisted of general greetings. She snapped a picture of the tree that everyone was putting their wishes on and wrote back, ‘Will do! I’ll let you know what kind of wish I get in return, depending on what it is I might need some suggestions.’ She got a thumbs up nearly right away, this made her smile because it meant that Dawn, their little kitten, was actively engaging. She wasn’t just replying whenever but was reading and interacting as soon as she could. This was a very good sign.

Still smiling, the dark haired woman slid up to the table with the scraps of paper to write on. The volunteer ran through their spiel, Ophilia nodded as needed, and soon she was handed a violet star charm, a pen, and one of the pieces of paper. She quickly scribbled down her wish, something about ‘World Peace’, and went to add it to the tree. It was as generic as she could make it. Something she did actually wish for, just not in the way most people did. After all, if they controlled everything then there would be no need to fight… hence ‘World Peace’. But people had to be contrary and ‘independent’ so she knew it wouldn’t happen.

The young woman snagged one of the other slips of paper and headed away from the crowd before reading it, a brow raising at the simple ‘Be Nice’ written on it. It was almost as generic as her own wish, and just as hard to grant. She could be polite. She could even be kind. But being nice, while doable, wasn’t always possible because sometimes being the ‘bad guy’ was needed. She didn’t mind being the bad cop, the cold one, the one who would tell you like it was.

But that was neither here nor there, she had taken the slip of paper to continue the conversation with Dawn so she quickly texted the younger girl, making some quip about how she would try but made no promises if it was before her coffee. After adding one of those LOL emojis she sent a picture of the star charm and asked if Dawn already had that color, since the young civilian mentioned trying to collect all the colors.

‘I don’t! Lucky!’ Ophilia grinned and quickly replied, ‘Then I’ll hold onto it until the next time we see each other,’ before shoving the little charm in her pocket. She assured Dawn over text that it was a duplicate color for her, it wasn’t, and felt exceedingly happy when she got a simple, if vague, agreement.

With a little bounce in her step, and with no longer needing to hold onto the wish she had picked up, Ophilia balled the little slip up and chucked it into the undergrowth. It was paper permeated with seeds, it would be fine. Besides, she would not be ruining her nails by burying it. Might as well let the rain handle it for her. “Alex will be pleased,” She muttered as she made her way to her car, she was absolutely going to have to tell him when she saw him tomorrow. She just hoped they would have a moment alone so she could show him the progress she made. Especially in such a relatively short time frame.
