06 * 30 * 1967 – Vasyukuvo, Russia
*Huh–Huh–Huh–*
Her lungs felt crystalline. Every desperate breath like a personal fog rolling across her face. The dead black veil of clouded midnight overhead like a worldly hammer waiting to fall. The crunch of snow beneath her unraveling leather boots; and the wind lashing her skin. She couldn’t stop. No part of her could have even conceived of this possibility. So deep into the backwater. To go any further than they had would risk encroaching upon the border crossings. This place had been the only region to make sense. In what world was this really happening? Be this some dreadful fervid nightmare. Please.
*Huh–Huh–Huh–*
She felt the top of her foot smack into a thick root; and stumbled across the snow. Planting her hand against the earth. Wincing as she both pushed and continued to run. She had to be here somewhere. She would see. She would see Annika running, and she would know. She would know to say something. Anything. They’d bolted earlier. As soon as they saw those bastards coming. They split West and East. Annushka knew. She knew the routine. She would run East for a mile, hook South for another, and then Southwest for another. Annika would do the same in the opposite directions. They always ended up meeting. It worked every time. Every. Time. Wait–is–a farm!
*Huh-Huh-Huh-*
Her pace all but doubled. The men’s coat she wore billowed behind her knees as she grasped the top of the wooden fence with both hands; and swung her legs overhead as if possessed by some Olympian spirit. She half-tumbled half-scrambled in her landing; and kept on running. Annushka has to be here. She just has to be. There’s no way she wouldn’t. It was cold. She came here because it was cold–and the animals! Little dummy loves those stupid horses. Maybe there were horses! Annika had barreled her way to the door of the barnhouse before her mind even caught onto the fact that it was there. She slammed into it with full force; her hands slapping flat against it as her face bounced from it’s surface. Still–she didn’t fall down.
Stupid wooden–she lifted the beam from the plates which held it up. Giving not a damn thought to the people in the nearby house who might awake to the sound. They could explain their way to a couple of farmers. That wasn’t an issue. So she tossed the beam onto the ground and it clattered with a loud declaration of her arrival. She pushed the doors open with one hand on each; and shoved them with the force of a young soldier.
“Annush–!”
Pale moonlight spilled into the room in concert with a symphony of clicking hammers, and snapping slides. Loose straw billowed across the cold earthen floor parsed with snow; and colored lavender by Luna’s light. Four soldiers of the Soviet Union stood with their sharp uniforms, and slightly askew red-star caps. Their machine gun barrels trained upon her person as a man in a black suit, thick-frame black glasses, and white hair stepped forward from their ranks. His hands in his pockets. His tone was gentle, and almost even serene. Or it would have been if she had heard it. But she couldn’t hear anything except..except this ringing in her ears.
A dark pool steadily grew out from it’s edges around the stilled and colourless form of a 14-year old girl. The flat cap of a newspaper boy sitting beside her head. Her narrow features locked in an expression of fear. A pocket knife sitting next to her hand. Her body riddled with the same bullet holes like the one which had entered through her right eye; and exited from the back of her skull. As the voice of the rambling man finally began to register in Annika’s mind her eyes traced every detail of the scene before her. Not because she wanted to. Not because she even intended to. Like a machine locking up while it processes a huge amount of information…she, too, was still comprehending.
“...wn fault, really. A terrible shame. Do you know..she pulled a knife on us? Pitiful little thing but..yes. Terrible shame. The only question now is…what to do with you?” Annika’s eyes didn’t move. She herself didn’t move. She didn’t answer. The man only smiled at this. Satisfied–clearly–with his accomplishments tonight. “Stalin’s little purge was all well and good but…what did he accomplish? Really! Now this Gorbachev they all keep talking about…he has ideas. A vision. He’s giving us a new agency–the KGB he calls it–and we will do…glorious work together.”
By now the man was all but standing over Annika. Above her?...Oh. She was on the ground. When did that happen? It wouldn’t have bothered to ask. She couldn’t tell. The man pulled a pistol from his belt; and cocked it in front of his men. He took a deep breath; and then placed that pistol up against Annika’s temple. “With that we arrive upon my original question. What to do with you……I could kill you. Shoot you like a sick animal here in the barn…but what good would that be to me? Sending you on to your dear little sister?” He asked as he turned around. Pulling the gun away from her head, and sliding it back into his belt. Because he knew what he was doing.
The very words ‘sending you on to your dear little sister.’ Annika’s gaze was finally pulled away. Even that desperate stupid futile crazy illogical thought.
"Kill Me.”
The words fell from her lips more like a phantom’s warning than a woman’s plea. As if she were already gone. As if she’d already moved on and this was merely the luggage asking for a lift. “And what good would that do us?” The man asked with that serene smile of his. “Boys.”
The soldiers moved on her. Annika tried to scramble back up. She really tried. But she’d been running for what felt like hours. “KILL MEEE” The soldiers winced at the deafening shout. They’d never expected to be found out here in the sticks. Everything had happened so fast…Annushka…Annushka.........The tears finally broke through; and they wouldn’t stop.
Three of the men hoisted her to her feet; and locked her arms behind her back. The pudgy little man with the glasses and suit stepped forward once again. Stepping in the pool which continued to grow around Annushka; and then into the dirt as though they were one and the same. “See we’ve got some…kooky scientists. They do some weird stuff they call science and…we need all the volunteers we can get. Better still when it’s a–” he raised his hand, and brushed a tear from Annika’s cheek. “--pretty little dissident…who rather be dead than contribute to her country.” His smile only widened; and he stepped around her as if this was a normal Tuesday for him.
“Let’s get you home, shall we?”
“AGHHH–” The soldier couldn’t take it. One of them raised his rifle, and smacked the butt of it into the back of Annika’s head. She slumped over in their arms. Her near-deafening banshee screams rendered to an unconscious quiet. Feet leaving parallel trails in the snow as the men hauled her into an indelible memory.

04 * 11 * 2026 – Underground R&D Staging Area outside Reno, NV
The high-pitched keen of a blaring alarm sounded throughout the facility. Corpses of men litter the hallways. Their bodies decorated in plasmic scorch marks, gunshot wounds, and even some kind of bestial claw marks. Screams echo through the building as red lights flare across every surface. Deeper into the facility is a sterilized cleanroom, and within it the bodies of researchers. The glass panes of their hazmat suits melted into their concave skulls. Beyond them stepped three individuals; and each exhibited their own horrible attributes.
Closest to the rear stood a Demon. Black skin, a single white horn accompanying a jagged black stump, and fiercely-burning emerald eyes. He was dressed in gear that was reminiscent of RIOT gear without the helmet; and yet without any gloves.
Next was the prismatic one. His body covered in a hundred or more flat surfaces all angled to form the shape of a bald muscular man. His crystalline form shimmering with every step he took in tandem with the Demon; and in tandem with their leader. The one who stood before the both of them; and pulled the device she was looking for from a safety box that had been melted into nothing.
Her body was like something indescribable. Like porcelain and steel melted into a single pristine white liquid then poured down her neck and over her entire body. Fissures of red-orange molten energy shone through the ethereal liquid glass she called her body. Long, flowing platinum-white hair. Eyes the color of sullied blood; and lips as pink as sakura petals. She turned to face her comrade; and spoke evenly to him. “Where are Hijack and Derado?” The demon smirked. “Still killin’ time–and flunkies, ha!”
The pristine creature spoke. Even it’s voice shimmered with layers of different octaves. “Is it wise to let them run wild?” The woman glanced at the prismatic creature; and in turn the creature quickly bowed it’s head. An instant admission of acknowledging it’s place. With that the woman smirked; and shrugged her shoulder. “Let them play–” She countered as the screams of distant men could be heard to any who bothered to listen, “Who’s gonna stop us, after all?”

I Once Fell Upon A Tibetan Monk. I Had Fangs And Unliving Power; He Had Words.... ______________________________________________________________________ Druid - Mystic - Badass
 04 * 12 * 2026 – Manhattan – NYC
Manhattan, New York City.
A thirty-three year old woman with curly fire-red hair is standing in the corner of a rather dingy record shop. No, not standing. She’s moving. Her hips and waist bobbing to a beat only she could hear. Old school oversized headphones plugged into the jack of a vinyl turntable; and a copy of Andre 3000’s “Ms. Jackson” echoing through her skull. The only others in the store were an older oriental woman reading a magazine at her desk in silence, and an overfed calico sleeping on it’s side in front of her. One wouldn’t know it just by walking in but the three of them were quite neighborly.
See this was just another day in paradise for Yvette Feu Noir. The retired redhead was living the oh-so-sweet life in Hudson Yards, Manhattan, New York! A bank account with enough zeroes for her to never work another day in her life. It would be a decade next week since she stepped out of her uniform and hung it up. Felt good too. From there it’s been nothin’ but sugarcakes and gumdrops. On this fine Thursday morning she was going to grab some new vinyls from Mrs. Saiyo, hit her favorite food truck for street tacos, swing by Baker & Taylor for some new books, and maybe catch that new Marvel crap the kids are all squealing over. Sometimes it’s fun to see what they wanna see, y’know? Or at least make fun of it.
Yvette giggled to herself at her little inside joke; and picked up the large sleeve which held the Andre 3000 vinyl. Examining it’s lovely artwork. As she did so she reached up to her head, pulling the left speaker of her headphones behind her ear, and smiling as she spoke. “Okay–you were right–some of the new stuff sounds pretty great on vinyl.” Yvette nodded in admittance. Ms. Saiyo knew her stuff. She started speaking to Saiyo again, turing her chin but not quite taking her eyes from the vinyl cover. “Hey you got anymore of the James Br–”
Her eyes had finally moved from the artwork; and the sight cut her short. Saiyo was standing upright which was already a red flag. Moreso when accentuated by the pale look on her face, and the wide eyes with which she intently stared at Yvette. By the front door of the shop were four agents–each wearing nearly identical black suits–and a rep. The guy who likes to pretend he’s in charge even when he’s in the field. A sharply-trimmed silver goatee; and a fashionable haircut. He allowed Yvette a moment to soak up the room; and then he spoke.
“Before you start–and I know you’re gonna start–we’re all unarmed. See?” He asked as he lifted his blazer enough to reveal his empty belt, and unaccompanied torso. “This next part’s where you reveal to me just how smart you are. Would you please come with us, miss?” Yvette sighed through her nose. Making a scene here in front of Ms. Saiyo was tantamount to blowing her cover across the planet. Really making a scene anywhere would result in that. She really didn’t wanna get back in the game. She really, really, realllllyyy didn’t want to. So if he wanted something that could help her get back to not doing that then….
“Fine.”She responded curtly. “But you are *not* giving me my job back.” The man put both of his hands up in surrender; and Yvette took that as consent. She set the records onto Ms. Saiyo’s counter, and smiled up at the woman. “Gonna have a chat with my ol’ boss, Missus Es. Hold onto these for me, would you?” Saiyo nodded awkwardly as she took the records; and with that Yvette walked out of the shop. Two men in front and two behind.
As one would of course expect the first thing she laid eyes on was a pair of big ol’ black SUV’s. Yvette started right towards them; and was stopped by goatee. “What? Think we’re that stupid?” He asked as he directed her attention to the two local NYPD cruisers sitting there. She rolled her eyes; and walked behind him as he approached a cruiser. A separate agent got into the driver seat; and with that they started pulling away from the curb. With her in the back like she was a teenager again; getting pulled over for playing hooky. Speaking of lectures…
“I’ve got a thousand things to do and enough time to get maybe two of ‘em done so I’ll make this quick. We need your help. Someone big just put skin in the game an–”
“Great stuff–really–but I’m not going back to work. It’s just not going to happen. So take me on back to my shop, and kindly fu–”
“We ain’t here to put you out there. We’re here to get you to train the newbies. Well…reforms.” Yvette arched her brow at that one. “You want me? Teaching a couple of tweens? Pass.” Goatee guy shook his head in disdain.
“They’re grown. They’re women. They’re in trouble; and this is their chance to make it right. Much like you’re in trouble, Blue Rose.”
Fffffuuuuuuuuuuu–
“Uh-huh. Yeah. Loooong time livin’ on the sidelines. You seen a lotta s**t happenin’ on the news and…what? Hit your favorite food truck? Got yourself a lil’ mannie-peddie time? Feels good ridin’ on your victories I bet. Cuttin’ out when you’re on the high-note…’s what a smart woman does. But guess what? We blow the whistle and the media tears your a** a new one. You go from noble hero to lazy zero in one interview you ain’t even a part of.”
Super fffffffffffffffine. Fine! “Fine! But I’m not puttin’ that damn getup on ever again. Got that?”
“Burn it for all I care. But do the job. Details are waiting back at your ritzy little pad. Don’t show? Your names on the news in 24 hours. Do the job? Maybe we talk about making that retirement plan inalienable. Square?”
Well…she had been getting a bit bored. The whole calling her out on the food truck bit really struck a chord with her. Had she gotten so predictable? Was that a bad thing? Eh…all questions for after the fact. For right now? She was gonna have to play ball. She groaned from the back seat; and slumped against the poor leather. “Let’s Go~” She all but bemoaned the word.

 04 * 13 * 2026 – Penthouse Suit, Woolworth Tower – NYC
You gotta admit…Uncle Sam throws down when he wants to. This place was ritzy even by her standards. First thing she questioned when she walked in was whether or not she should wear her shoes. Fortunately the second thing was the sight of the long conference table waiting for her near the floor-to-ceiling windows. She huffed as she crossed over the room. The suite was packed with a various number of essentials, commodities, living spaces…pair that all with the extensive room service choices? It was truly everything a rich person needed to never ever engage with society ever again.
It was also sparsely populated with half a dozen of goatee’s best agents. He still hadn’t given up his name. He said she’d find out today during their little conference call, so…while she waited she decided to open up the dossiers waiting for her. Two files. Both equally thick and menacing in their size. She pursed her lips in a frown; and reached over to the first one. Her head immediately canting to the side after opening the cover. “The hell?” She said as she laid eyes on the image on the top of the file. A photo taken only recently. Of a thing looping one arm over a bartender, and smilling gleefully as someone took their picture.
“Is that…an Ogre? A ********? A Dem–” The elevator doors dinged open; and the very creature she had been speaking of walked into the room. It’s face alight with a beaming smile, and taking in everything about the suite it had just walked into. Spectacular.
Show’s getting started.
