Settling around the glowing fire, Sitara hummed softly. It wasn't often that she had time alone to reflect on her life and the choices she'd made. If it wasn't her boys Nebo or Irri, it was someone within her large extended family. She loved them all dearly, and would absolutely give her life to protect any one of them, as if they would ever let her. Tara struggled to say no to them when they wanted to spend time with her, when they wanted her to travel with them, when they just wanted to talk. She never wanted to disappoint any of them, and even though it was a ridiculous notion, she worried denying them would lead to disappointment. None of her loved ones had ever made her feel like that, but it was still a lingering fear in her mind.

She knew she wasn't a disappointment, and no one in her family had ever even hinted at such a thing, but it was hard for the mare not to feel like it. Her parents had them, and a love that would last lifetimes. Her brother had children that he loved more than words. And while Tara had Irri and Nebo, she always felt something was missing.

Lifting her head to the sky, Tara watched the smoke from the fire slowly dissipate into the dark night sky. It felt like a failure, not having children, especially since she so desperately wanted them. She and Irri would never have children without the help of the stars, a dream that the mare had lingering out among those stars now. He was her first love, a true and honest love carried over years of friendship and companionship. It didn't matter to her that they would never walk the plaines or swim the oceans together, they were soul mates in the truest sense of the word. Irri would float in the shallows as near as he could, and she would settle in the sands. They'd spend hours talking, sharing dreams and hopes, an unflinching honesty with each other that came from complete trust. She knew no matter what happened on land, Irri would be there to love and support her.

It had been hard, bringing Nebo into the fold. He'd come into her life like a falling star, blowing apart what she had planned in the best of ways. He was mild, calm and unflinching. Nothing seemed to phase him, and he seemed more then content to share her heart with the Mer below the waves. She never saw herself loving two stallions, but here she was. They were as similar as they were different, and both gave her support in their own ways. Nebo was a lot like her father, grandfather and great grandfather. Steadfast, loving guardians of their families. Irri was whimsical, joyful and pure in ways none of them would ever be.
In fact, it had be Irri who first suggested their arrangement. He's stared up at her from the waves, beaming at her. He'd asked her why she couldn't love them both? He loved her, more than he could ever express. But he was no fool. He knew that Nebo offered her far more than he could, no matter how much she'd protested that. He told her he knew how much she loved him, but he was thrilled there was someone who could be with her in their world.
Nebo, to his credit, hadn't blinked at her mention of the Mer, or the arrangement. He simply hummed, and asked to meet Irri himself. After a discussion Tara wasn't privy to, they had come to an accord. They had their own friendship now, separate from her, an unexpected joy. She'd told Irri he could do the same, find someone to spend his time with. He'd just smiled, and told her if that was meant to be, it would. But she would be the first to know.

Flames crackled in front of her, drawing her attention out of her memories and back to the present. Her mother often reminded her that they were blessed beyond words, and Tara sometimes forgot that. Her family was happy and healthy, living their lives with purpose and peace. She had their unyielding support and love, something so many did not have. She had Nebo and Irri, two males that loved her for her, flaws and all. Two males who would rope the moon to give to her if they could, and she would do the same for them. While she had fears and insecurities, she knew that her loved ones would be there to support and love her no matter what.

And wasn't that something to be truly grateful for.

There's something peaceful in watching the one you love. It's a quiet moment of contemplation, of watching your hopes and dreams exist in another. It's also nerve-wracking, your entire existence held in the hands of another. Someone who could lead you to happiness or down the road to ruin. Mingan Nebo, just Nebo to most, watched Sitara from the tree line. She was sitting, silent and contemplative, watching the fire burn in front of her. He often knew what his Star was thinking based on her face, and he could tell she needed more time to sit within herself and come to some understanding.

She held such high expectations for herself, she was always her own worst critic. She was beloved by her family, and spent as much time with them as possible. She worked hard to make them all proud, and she often beat herself up for what she perceived as failures. He admired her deep attachment to her family, the strong thread of love that connected them. Nebo saw his brother Esa occasionally and his father even less, they were not nearly as close as the family Tara came from. It had taken some getting used to on his part, but he'd grown to appreciate the connection they all shared.

It had also been an adjustment, sharing her the way he did. He felt blessed to have her at all, and sharing her with the Mer wasn't as big of an ask as many would perceive. Both Tara and Irridian were acutely aware of the limits of their relationship, but they had come to share a deep emotional connection that Nebo would never match. They had known each other since they were young, building a bond that Nebo would never be able to touch. Meeting Tara had been a light in the darkness, a star that lead him home. As they spent time together, he could see the conflict in her eyes. She loved Irri, but she loved him too. So, when she asked him to meet the Mer, and possibly discuss whatever this arrangement was, he hadn't hesitated. He's take Tara however she would come to him, and if that meant she'd spend time with Irri, then so be it. To be quite honest, he liked Irri as well. He was a kind, nervous and shy Mer that clearly worshiped Tara. She's spend hours in the shallows with him, talking and sharing tales of their adventures on land. Irri would regale her of tales of the ocean, and bring her beautiful gifts. Nebo would give them their time alone, and eventually Tara would come back home to tell him the same stories.

Turning his attention back to Tara at the fire, he had to smile. She worked so hard to make others happy, she often forgot about herself and her own joy. He would remind her every second he had with her that she was worthy of all the love and happiness out there.

Clearing his throat softly, he approached her from the woods. "You're thinking so hard I can see it from here, my Star."
