I'm a guitar player. A guitar player that doesn't know much about effects.
I was wondering if anyone out here in J-Rock land knows how to acheive some of the more "standard" J-Rock sounds. L'arc, DeG, X, and generic sounds are what I'm looking for.
I'd like to think that this thread could possibly help others find this information as well so if you know actual "official" effects and settings of bands/songs or just how to sound pretty close to any of them go ahead and post them up. Thanks.

Id say just experiment with something and find something that sounds like what youre trying to achieve, you should be fine with a basic distortion pedal (latest DeG isnt all that different sounding effect wise than simply turning the pedal to the highest setting) to start off with though and just use different degrees of the effect with your music. You dont want to be a copycat though and try to sound just like them though, use your own sound smile .

It was more for playing of specific songs. I have my own sound that I am quite fond of but I was wondering how some of these people go about getting their sounds. The one that pops into my mind is DeG's Yokan. And L'arc's general sound since they seem to be consistent in that area.

hmm for yokan, maybe just a low setting of gain on your amp? i dont think that had much added to it to achieve that sound.
do you have sheet music for it or a tab?

I swear it has delay and envelope... But as I said I don't know much about effects. I know that there is a wah used for the solo.

for things like X and any bands that sound like x if you turn yer bass up almost all the way mid up halfis and high to like 1/4 you get a decent sound. Keep your gain 1/2 or lower the more you put it up the more you lose the clarit y of sound that is so apparent in jrock.

Alot of the sounds actually come from the tuning. Half-steps or whole steps up/down on the actual tunes from basic. Also...distortion, different additives on the amps. It takes a lot to figure it out. Play around...and best of luck

if you have an amp you should mess around with it a bit. like make one sound stand out from the others. making distorion stand out makes a really cool rock affect

they use a lot of effects, like palm mute, slide, pulloff, etc but the basic distortion pedal should do the rest
