It was the end of a very long day. It had twiddled on endlessly through the boring day to day mantra that was Fox Techie’s life. Her mind felt numb from the days activities of listening to the endless ramblings of the filth from which she was expected to learn. Fox quickly packed away all her pencils, papers, and other paraphernalia that she required for her lessons; shoving them into any open space in her bag - showing no regard for their safety. She felt the strong tug from the overwhelming weight of her bag as she slung it over her shoulder. She always kept all the books and supplies with her that she could ever need – regardless of the days planned events. She had found herself up the preverbal “creek without a paddle” far too many times to put anything to chance.

She glared towards the teacher as she made her way out the door, even though the teacher was far too busy answering the questions of her more needy students to give any attention to Fox’s actions. She took a heavy sigh as she opened the door to the brisk night air feeling the regret of another wasted day. Oddly today she didn’t feel like making her way back to the dorms…she would usually start on her assignments right away, but this day she was especially feeling down…feeling only the empty repetitions of her scholarly endeavors. She mulled about the campus, but wasn’t content to stay among the scholarly grounds – she felt the need to get out and just be away for a while. So she decided to take a drive.

It was getting late and she was getting no where, and she was thinking of getting back. Fox wasn’t quite sure where she had driven herself off too, there seemed to be a forest near the side of the road. She was mindlessly watching the trees go by as she thought she saw a soft white something beyond the branches. Her curiosity got the better of her and she decided to give it a look. She pulled onto the shoulder and left the car in search of this white item.

It was hard to see in the darkness as she pushed through the branches and bushes, it looked like this place hadn’t been visited in a while. Her shoelace got caught on something and in order to free it she pulled on it roughly. As it broke free she stumbled backwards knocking into another person.

“Oh! Please excuse me! I didn’t know anyone was out here!” she cried.

The stranger starred at Fox seemingly bewildered until he found himself able to speak “I…seem to be lost…” he said meekly.

Fox wasn’t quite sure what to do with him. There weren’t any other cars parked by the roadside, and it didn’t look as if there were any houses around either. ‘Where could he have come from?’ she thought to herself quickly trying to figure things out.

“Um…well…my car isn’t far from here. Come on, I’ll give you a ride.” Fox said a bit shaky, not sure if she should trust this stranger.

The stranger only nodded and followed Fox as she followed the path she had made. ‘I hope this guy doesn’t live too far…he seems like a real-’ her thought was interrupted by a grunt of pain from behind her.

Fox turned to see the stranger cupping his foot in his hands ‘huh, I didn’t think people could bend-wait! He doesn’t even have shoes? Something seems really strange here...’ she thought as she came to his assistance.

“Uh…let me help you okay?” she said offering to let him lean on her shoulder.

The stranger was a bit reluctant, but gave in to the offer and hobbled out of the forest with Fox’s help. It was a bit brighter once they reached the road; the moon was no longer blocked by the dense forest. Fox gawked as she saw the face of the supposed stranger she had been helping. He almost fell as she stopped dead in her tracks, but she was able to recover and catch him. There faces were mere inches apart as Fox caught him from falling. Fox just starred mouth agape into his large curious eyes with heavy dark bags resting beneath them.

L felt himself flushed as he pulled himself off of the girl turning away to hide his appearance. Fox summed her courage and put her arm on his shoulder to grasp his attention.

“co-comon! You can stay at my place, it’s…its cold out here and you don’t even have any shoes.”

L was taken aback by her kind offer and after a moment of calculating all the factors he replied “…thank you…”

Fox nodded and helped him into the car she was quite distressed as he chose to sit with his feet at the edge of the seat, but knew it was best to let him be ‘I just hope the cops don’t give me any grief…given they don’t notice he’s a character from a Manga…’

It was a quite ride back to the campus, as fox’s mind was alive with all sorts of worries and questions. She well knew this sort of thing was impossible, but it was hard to ignore ‘…he…must just look like him…yea, that’s got to be it. And if its not, then I’ll wake up next morning and it will all be gone! That’s it! I must be dreaming!’ she went on to convince herself that this wasn’t truly happening. She felt an odd sensation come over her as if someone was boring a hole into the side of her head. She looked over to see that he was starring right at her. She quickly turned back to the road having herself a mini-heart attack ‘this is not happening…it’ll all be gone in the morning…gone in the morning….gone in the morning…’ she said to herself over and over until they finally reached their destination.

Fox was overly eager to get this day over with and quickly whisked L from her car into her dorm.

“You can stay here tonight…and uh…it’s late so we can talk in the morning…okay?” she asked ‘and in the morning YOU WILL BE GONE!’ she yelled in her head.

L simply nodded. He looked a little freaked out about everything that was going on, but Fox was too freaked to notice it much herself.

L sat himself down on the foot of Fox’s bed, and gave the tiny room a look over. He felt very odd in such a dumpy little hole, sure the furniture was nice but the building was a proverbial rat’s nest. He wasn’t quite sure what it was, but he felt very out of place here. He snapped back to reality as he received a light poking to the head.

He looked up curiously as Fox lumbered over him with narrowing eyes. “You sleep in that bed!” she said pointing to the other bed in the room ‘there’s no way this apparition is going to get the better of me!’ she thought.

L looked over to the second bed. It was completely clean, not even a fitted sheet. You could see the old rusty frame supporting the thin spring mattress. “But…that one doesn’t have any blankets.”
Fox was pretty tired at this point, and was no longer in the mood to be hospitable. “This is my bed, you go sleep in the other one!” she demanded.

“But…that one doesn’t have any blankets.” He replied exactly as he had a moment later.

Fox huffed “Fine…fineeee…there’s a spare blanket around here somewhere…” she said too tired to argue and looked through a few of the boxes scattered on the floor and soon found a fluffy blanket.

“There we go” she said to herself as she turned to see L happily snuggled in the covers on her bed. Her eye twitched as she watched him ‘Oh NO HE DID’NT!’ she thought to herself.

Fox walked up to the side of the bed and grabbed L, blanket and all, then swiftly deposited him on the spare bed. She flicked off the light, and then retired to her now unoccupied bed.

L lied there with his eyes wide open still in shock.

“Goodnight” Fox said softly as they both eventually got to sleep.

The alarm roared in Fox’s ear as the text “6:00” flashed repeatedly across its screen. Fox moaned as she debated weather or not it was worth it to roll over and push the snooze. Suddenly the alarm stopped, and Fox jumped up to see L fumbling around with the alarm clock.

Fox starred at him nervously as he twittled with the small appliance ‘that’s not right….he was just a dream! This can’t be real!’ She thought to herself unable to believe that a Manga character was actually sitting in her room.

L quickly noticed that he was being starred at and looked up at Fox with his dark laden eyes as he crouched on the bed in a peculiar position with his legs propped up next to his chest as his bare feet leaning on the edge of the bed.

“Um…is something wrong…?” he asked her.

Fox nervously scratched the back of her head as she wasn’t quite sure what to tell him. ‘Well, I guess he could still be someone else…yea he probably just looks like L. I’m sure if I ask this will all get cleared up.’ She thought to herself.

“I was just wondering…who are you and where are you from? And what exactly were you doing out there in the woods last night?” she stated rather bluntly, taking L off guard.

L looked away towards the ground searching his head for the answers to Fox’s questions. He became uneasy as he himself couldn’t remember “I…I’m not sure…” he said quietly as he continued to try to remember.

Fox’s eye twitched slightly as this was not the answer she was hoping for “Are you sure? There’s nothing you can remember?” she pleaded hoping for a better answer.

L looked up still straining to remember anything, as one small tidbit slipped out “I remember…” he started.

“Yes…?” Fox asked as he seemed too deep in thought to continue his sentence.

“It’s not much, but it’s all that’s coming to me…” he continued “Some people would refer to me simply as ‘L’”

Fox very nearly died as she heard the words come out of his mouth “Are you sure?!?!” she blurted out.

L nodded “yes…is something wrong?” he asked.

Fox quickly put up her hands up in defense and shook her head vigorously “No! Of course not! Nothings wrong! Why would anything be wrong? Everything is just fine!” she wasn’t sure how she should handle the situation ‘Should I tell him? Would that only make things worse? What on earth am I going to do?!?’ she stressed.

L wasn’t sure what to do about the current situation either. He had no idea where he was or where he had come from; even his full name wouldn’t come to him. All he could remember was his odd nickname - if that’s even what it was. ‘It’s obvious she doesn’t want me to stay here…she seems so off about something…’ he thought to himself. L stood up from his odd position and spoke softly “I should go...”

Fox quickly got up and caught him by the shoulder “You don’t have anywhere to go do you?” she asked.

L simply shook his head.

Fox gave him a worried smile “You should stay here. We can…go to the police and see if anyone’s looking for you…or something. I’m sure someone will eventually come by looking for you!” she said knowing full well that wouldn’t happen ‘I can’t just let him go out on his own…this is such a mess…’ she thought to herself, trying not to let it show.

L nodded sheepishly looking up at Fox from his awkward hunched posture.

As they finished another alarm sounded behind then warning that the time was now 7:30. Fox quickly hoped over turning it off and setting it up to go off at a later date, then grabbed her bag from the foot of the bed and swung its heavy load over her shoulders as all her textbooks and homework were safely nestled inside its canvass grip. She turned to L and scratched her head.

‘hmmm…what am I going to do with him in the meantime…?” she thought to herself “Um…you can hang out here till I get back…it should be a couple hours…” she then pointed to the television set “you can watch TV or something! Have fun!” she said as she waved while leaving the room.

L stood there dumbfounded ‘…why does she need two alarm clocks…?’

Fox couldn’t concentrate on the lecture as her mind kept drifting onto the subject of what to do with her new little annoyance. ‘I could just file with the police…hopefully no one would notice the resemblance and at least he’d think I was trying…but there’s no way I can tell him! Maybe he is just lost, and all of this is just one big mix up…yea right.’

Fox tried to get him off her mind, but she wasn’t too successful. As everyone got up to leave she was left with a head full of worries and a page full of doodles. She sighed to herself and packed up her things dreading the trip back to her room.

She slowly slunk back towards the dorm. As she came to the door she just starred at it. ‘Well…it not going to open itself, and I can’t leave him in there forever…’ she took a deep breath and quickly flung open the door.

As she walked in she found it noticeably empty. Her heart pounded and she became overwhelmed with fright, and started to dig furiously through her messy room. She made sure to check under the beds and even the lamp…and surprisingly found nothing!

“Where would he go? Maybe I’ll never find him!” Fox worried aloud as she searched over portion of the room she had already ransacked. She suddenly stopped her movements and stepped back for a moment ‘you know…with him gone I don’t have to worry about him anymore…yea, he’d just be someone else’s problem! And I could go on with my life!” she thought to herself, and then smacked her head ‘I can’t do that…there’s no telling what trouble he could get into…hell, he doesn’t even have shoes!’ She sighed and turned around and out the door.

‘He can’t have gone far, I’m sure he’s around here somewhere…’ she thought to herself.

She started her search throughout the dorm, pacing the hallways and peeking in the occasional open door, but to no avail. “I sure hope nothing bad happened to him…” she spoke quietly as she continued her search.

As she was passing by a window she spotted a familiar head of frumpy hair out of the corner of her eye and spun around to see L along with a couple students chatting in the quad.

Fox stormed down to the quad in a huff. She heard the composed murmurings of highly technical speak as she neared the small group. She approached L and starred daggers into his eyes, and as soon as their gaze met L jumped back.

“Hi…you were taking so long I thought I’d take a quick look around…” he said after he sheepishly waved to Fox.

“I told you to stay put!” Fox yelled as she grabbed his hand “You’re coming back with me right now!”

As Fox was dragging L by the arm one of the students L had been chatting with whistled and the whole group laughed. Both L and Fox blushed and Fox let go of L’s arm and quickly turned to face the offending student.

She glared at him and he put his hands up in defense.

“It was just a little joke! Don’t flake out about it.” He said almost jokingly which caused Fox’s anger to flare up even more.

“How dare you! You ignorant insufferable little cretin! You should shut the ******** up and mind your own god damned business! Why don’t you just drop out and leave us all the hell alone you intolerable little wanna be high school floozy!” She barked.

As Fox was politely sharing her feelings with the young college student L slowly slinked away while her attention was otherwise preoccupied.

Fox swiftly turned away forbidding the student to make a reply she noticed L had once again disappeared. She grunted in anger and took off back into to dorm, hoping he just decided to start back without her.

Fox quickly caught up with L and startled him as she touched his shoulder to slow him down. Fox quickly recoiled at the contact giving out a nervous laugh and stroking the back of her head.

L stopped in front of her and asked “so…you were going to go to the police about me, correct?” he asked.

Fox stopped to collect her thoughts and then nodded, “Uh, right. We need to do that…” she trailed off and for a moment their eyes met. Each blushed, but Fox quickly brushed it and grabbed L by the wrist.

“But first things first, you need some shoes.”

Fox dragged L back to her room and shuffled through her closet as he looked on curiously. A few pairs of shoes were callously tossed outside the reassess of the closed falling harshly on the floor in front of L.

“Sorry there kind of old…but see if any of them fit.” Fox called out as she got out from the closet.

L leaned down to take a look and prodded one gently with his finger “they’re…a little big…”

Fox leered at L “Just put on a pair so we can get going.”

L whimpered and reluctantly chose a pair of old sneakers.

“You should put some socks on too.” Fox spoke up as L started to put the shoes on barefoot, but he merely shook his head and continued.

Fox sighed ‘I don’t know how he can stand it’ she looked over to him “we should get going.

L nodded and followed after Fox.

It was fairly routine at the police station; they filed a report and were asked some questions by the officers there. Fox worried if L would be disappointed when no one came to get it, but she figured he would never believe the truth.

It was a quite walk home as Fox had many thoughts buzzing around her head she didn’t even notice as L tried to get her attention. Seeing that she was aloof L lightly touched Fox’s shoulder to get her attention.

Fox snapped out of it and turned to face L “what is it?” she asked.

“You seem…upset. Are you okay?” he asked.

Fox took a deep breath and debated weather or not to touch on the subject which was bothering her. “You know…there’s a chance no one will come looking for you…” she said quietly.

L stopped in his tracks forcing Fox stop as well. As she turned to face him he spoke up “If that happens…can I stay with you?” he asked sheepishly.

Fox smiled warmly.

“sure.”
