I think I would tell Mal to be nicer to Inara and fess up to himself and then to her that he really likes her.

Ooo. That's a toughy. I'd probably talk to River, even though I have no idea what I'd say to her. But you know that that doesn't matter, what she would have to say would be much more interesting.
