MoonRazor
"Easy on now, hun... Don't get too close t'the water, see?" The roan mare muttered to herself as she pulled up some grass. Lingering about the oasis was the one thing she lived for. Other than running of course. Horse like her had been born to run. And without running, she'd sure as hell die away slowly.

Charna chanced a peek at herself in the reflection of the cool water. She snorted in disgust at the pink muzzle and blue eyes. "See wot 'appens when you go so close, don't you? You get mad at y'self. So why do it, right?" She muttered once more.

ropin and riden
The small stallion was just making his way from his new caretaker's yurt, something about that dapple mare in there just made him uneasy; made him look over his shoulder if you will. And it was always when that young girl, the caretaker, came near either of them. Well, Balius wasn't to worried about that right now, he had been broken in long before and was pretty calm around two-leggers. The dun peared through oddly colored emerald eyes, that oasis was here somewhere, he could smell it; soon he'd be able to dip his muzzle in those cool waters.

MoonRazor
"Wot d'you say, hun, have we got comp'ny?" Charna asked herself as she shut her eyes against the glare of the sun and her reflection to drink. "Why, yesss, it rather seems as if it does, does it not?" She answered, lifting her muzzle and opening her eyes.

ropin and riden
Balius was certainly making good timing, those small but sturdy legs of his just couldn't stop moving, and he didn't have the mind to bring his hooves to a screeching halt... that is, until he spotted a dark mare at the oasis. Huh, well, he could share right? Rather then sneak up and scare her, possibly, the stallion nickered his greeting to this stranger as he advanced. "Even'n ma'am", he said casually, the stallion much older then his nervous yurt mate counterpart.

MoonRazor
Charna blinked as she squinted at him. "Wot say we say hello, then, hun? If'n he's not goin' ta." She paused. "Might strange, ain't 'e, m'arm? Is 'e even a horse? Mebbe 'es a donkay or wotnot." She replied to herself, shaking her head in bewilderment. "Well, we say 'ello, then, and we find out." The first replied.

Charna cocked her head carefully. This... horse-like being... was small. Small enough to be one of her old master's Arabs. She frowned. He could be a spy.. "You there, donkeyhorsethingy!" She called out at him. An answering tone snapped at herself. "Aw, come on, be nice to him! He may be a nice donkayhorse!" Charna shook her head, frowning inwardly at being interrupted. "You there! Are ye a spy?"

ropin and riden
Being as polite as he was the stallion decided to leave her be when he heard her talking to herself, guessing she had much on her mind. Reaching the water's edge no more then ten yards away from this mystery mare he was about to lower his lips and sip up the sweet nector of this oasis, among the heat of- Wait a minute. Did that mare just snap at him? Donkeyhorse?! Giving a bit of a quizical look through the corner of his emerald eyes Balius lifted his head once more from his sweet release to glance at the mare. Though his eyes were ever kind in their return. Spy? Not that I know of. Why? he questioned. He was willing to look past the donkeyhorse comment for now, depending on if she took it any further.

MoonRazor
"Ohreally, see tha's the kinda thing a spy would say, now isn't it?" Charna retorted with a roll of her eyes. "Don't mind him, hun, he can't do much t'you now." She tilted her head. "Well, wot are ye doin' down here, then?" She challenged, drawing her head up.

ropin and riden
Obviously he had done something very wrong to this mare for her to call him and accuse him of such things, but what? What on earth did he possibly do to her? Extending his neck just barely the stallion took a closer look at her for the first time, did he know her from somewhere. Ignoring the tones and challenges of her movements he snorted slightly, shaking his head and sending an unruly forelock over one emerald eye. "I can honestly say I've never seen you before, and I just came down for a drink", still as collected as ever Balius flicked an idle tail behind him; his muzzle level as he kept light eye contact.

MoonRazor
"Huh. 'Jus' came down for a drink', he sez. Oh, but we know better, don't we, hun? We know jus' what he was supposed to be doin', of course we do." She rolled her eyes again and scowled.

"Never seen you before, m'arm. S'what he said! We never seen no donkeythings like that 'un neither, have we?" Charna shook her head, an amused smile playing along her muzzle as she responded.

"H'of course not, hun, not at some donkeything. But h'as a horse, perhaps, yes."

ropin and riden
The poor stallion was getting more confused by the minute, he couldn't quite follow just what she was trying to say but he flicked his ears back slightly with her scowl. Was she undermining him? Threatening him? And he couldn't say he was partial to the donkeyhorse comment of before. Giving up on polite conversation and not trusting himself to speak further on an issue he didn't understand he shook himself from muzzle to tail. "Don't know about you, but I need to relax", and with a bob of his head the stallion exused himself. Turning slowly back to the water Balius lapped up the water, but stared at his reflection for a moment. Sighing heavily he looked like he was about to turn and leave, until a grunt came from him as his legs shot forward like an unruly colt, plunging into the water. For the first time since they've met he smirked, allowing his legs to fold as he was partially submerged in the water.

MoonRazor
"Ey, you! Not done, now am I?" She snapped, following him to the water. She stayed away from seeing her reflection but stood a little ways off, watching him curiously.

"Y'see wot 'appens when y'don't take control of the situation!"

Charna snorted and shook her mane out. She shied away at the sudden splash of water, a whinny ripping from her throat as she danced away awkwardly. "What was'at fer, eh?" She narrowed her eyes, but it suddenly seemed like a good idea.

Cautiously, she waded into the water until it reached her knees. The water was refreshing... She kicked out from the shallow water, until all but her head was submerged. She swam in a small circle with a laugh. "Huh, tis cool, tis."

ropin and riden
He may have been up there in years but he wasn't a lifeless old bump on the log. No sirry bob. He did miss his old home though, back in the states, he remembered when he use to do this back in the day, back when grass and water was plentiful. Perhabs that's what possessed him to dive into the oasis, perhabs it was his memories of this that drove him to such an extreme. He was trying to ignore the confusing mare and her voice... that is until he heard the ripples of water. Glancing back he snorted slightly, well, maybe he wasn't the only one that needed a dip? "Yes, and fun", he nickered. Twisting his ears forward once more he stayed in the shallows where he could continue to lay down without worry.

MoonRazor
"Indeed." Charna bobbed her head, nodding as well as she could when she was neck-high in water, a fleeting smile flashing upon her muzzle. "Perhaps y'ain't no spy, then, eh? Spies don' like water none." She said solemnly. And perhaps it was better to go with simple philosophies such as hers. Her mind worked in a simple way. And sometimes, it was good to be simple.

ropin and riden
Balius, though relieved she wasn't calling him a spy anymore, sensed something else. Something only his fleeting youth could tell him; that solemn tone. "No I can't be a spy, I love water to much", the stallion assured her, that voice of his never breaking from the calm he had acquired when the colt in him had been bucked and reared out through the years. He watched for a moment before continuing, not daring to stick his muzzle where it didn't belong though. "My name is Balius, might I know yours?" he asked, again dipping his muzzle to drink.

MoonRazor
Oh, she knew he wasn't a spy, but she still hesitated. "Mine? Eh... Charna." She said, making her way toward the shallow water for a bit of a rest. Who knew paddling could be so tiring?

"Naww! Y'just blew it, m'arm, ye did!" She muttered to herself absently. Then she shook her head to clear the voice. She kind of felt like talking to this stallion now, and she wasn't quite sure she wanted the Voice interrupting her.

ropin and riden
Setting his gaze steady once more he blinked during her hesitation before catching her name. An interesting name he might have inquired about, but at the moment he was more interested in this place in gernal. "Nice to meet ya. Can't say I cared much for the donkeyhorse thing, but it's better then alot of other things I've been called", he chuckled slightly under his breath. Because of his size he often time had to prove himself more then once. "How can you stand the heat here anyways?" he asked, keeping his ears forward and alert. Though he knew he would need to get out soon and dry off, it just occured to him he might get in trouble for this.

MoonRazor
"Twas your fur wot got me." Charna said with a smile. She'd never seen such a horse as he before, and it made her really wonder if, somewhere way back, maybe a kangaroo had been mixed into his bloodlines.

She shrugged at his question, inwardly fighting to keep from letting the Voice out. But...
"Ah, tha's not a question, now is it? It's just a state of survival, donkeyhorse."

Charna winced. "Sorry." She said, apologizing. "I was born here. I've lived here all my life. I probably would wonder how anyone survives in cold."

ropin and riden
At the mention to his hide he got curious, craning his neck around to struggle and look at his partially exposed rump that was still out of the water. Huh, well... his hide was a bit odd he had to admit. "Well, can't argue with what the eye can see", he grinned, feeling a bit more at ease now that she was smiling instead of snapping. Though he had to c**k his head slightly when she once more called him a donkeyhorse, excusing it with a bob of his head when she apolized. It was odd, and Balius had never talked to a horse such as she, but it made it all the more interesting. "Wow, that might explain it," he agreed, and smirked a little when she mentioned the cold. "Blankets. Nice warm blankets and a hot mash every once and while if you get to cold."

MoonRazor
"Huh. Well, I don't 'ave firsthand experience, but I see it in a lotta import 'orses. Firs' they go through this period where they step outside the yurt 'nd they sweat a lot and have ta roll around in this 'ere sand a lot, but it passes, and then they get less sweaty when they gotta go outside." She shrugged. "All in the livin', I s'ppose."

ropin and riden
"I've seen that before, but I mostly like to stay in my yurt. Next time I got out I might as well try the roll'n, maybe that'll help?" he thought about it some. True he coat wasn't as dark as others, but his back did happen to get pretty hot when he did go outside. But he was starting to feel a bit of restlessness in his legs and shifted slightly, trying to gain his footing in the wet sands beneath him. Slipping at first, and dunking his chest into the water, Balius struggled slowly at first until he was finally standing. "Don't know about you, but I better get out of here before I get pruney", that was a joke on his end, for as far as he knew horses didn't get pruney. But, with a cautious persision the stallion backed his way out of the water, once again feeling the heat as it soak into his hide. It was as if he had never went for a swim, for he guessed it was just that hot outside if it started drying him right away.

MoonRazor
Charna smiled, following him out of the water. It was just as well, she wasn't especially fond of swimming about. She shook the dripping water from her fur. "Y'know, I've never really had conversation with another horse before, other than... you know." She said. Already, in his company, she could feel the Voice gradually subsiding, and she could feel that it was easier to watch her tongue and keep the Voice from slipping out. She knew change, at the very least, but the Voice, after having been molded out of years of verbal abuse, did not.

ropin and riden
If it was one thing Balius prided himself on, it was his calm and endeavur to be patient with others. He really didn't have much of a temper, nor mistrust; just a simple pleasantness. "Conversation can be a great thing with the right type of horse, that is. I've had other conversations before, not good ones I might add", he stopped himself from going into a ramble, the fella really not wanting to get into that right now. But he bobbed his head to the last part of her sentence, he had her talking to herself before, but he hadn't thought much of it. A horse could get bored, right? His hide wasn't much for dripping, rather he allowed the particles of water to evaperate off him, hoping it's cooling effect would last longer. "But it is nice to talk with you Charna", he added after a bit, remembering how uneasy his yurt-mate had made him feel earlier.

MoonRazor
She nodded in agreement to his last comment, deep in thought. All she really wanted was to have horses to talk to, so she wouldn't have to rely on herself to keep from going insane. She wanted to quash the Voice. Forever.

ropin and riden
Slowly dipping his muzzle to what little vegitation was offered near his hooves the stallion lipped at a few shoots of sun dried grass, perked ears staying alert and listening to whatever little movements this mare would make. He realized she seemed to have a lot on her mind, like his earlier thought when he saw her talking to herself, so Balius lifted his muzzle to ask a final question. "Do you visit this oasis often?" he knew it was getting late, and his new caretaker would not be pleased if he was not back soon.

MoonRazor
"'Often' would be understating it, I guess..." She said. "Most of the time, I'm either training for the big race, or I'm here. And how long does it take to run around? So..." She shrugged. In truth, this oasis had almost become like her home. She spent little time in the yurt, where all the big and mighty stallions, although not small, were still smaller than herself. It had become so that Azhra would only come to look for her in the oasis, and rarely brought her back to the yurt for the night.

((continued))

Balius flicked his ears in interest the small stallion listened quietly to what she had to say, those emerald eyes of him were still as calm as ever. It took a lot to get this horse's blood boiling, hence why he didn't jump down her throat when she started calling him a donkeyhorse and saying he was a spy. No, the poor fella had some years behind him and the unruly colt he use to be was long gone. Now is that to say he wasn't as active as always? No. He still ran and played when he was in the mood for it, but he had calmed down considerably since then. "Big race?", he inquired curiously after she was done, he hadn't heard of a big race, but then again he didn't talk to many horses either. "I would like to know about this big race, if you wouldn't mind telling me about it", completely lifting his muzzle from the grasses to keep full attention on Charna; taking note that if he ever wanted to find her again, he should look here at the oasis.

"The one coming up." She said, looking at him quizically. It was strange that he didn't know about the Ocean of Fire. It was the talk of the yurt for the horses that her new master owned, and it rather seemed as if they had chosen that Shakil to be their runner. She, however, was so much faster and could run so much longer than he... it confused her. "I heard it's called the Ocean of Fire, or something like that.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 04, 2006 10:05 am

Flicking his ears from side to side the stallion tried to remember any talk he might have heard about this 'ocean of fire' race. Maybe it was a bad thing he stuck to himself most of the time, for with her look he guessed it was an odd thing that he didn't know. Maybe his yurt-mate would know about it? Though he flinched slightly at the thought of trying to make friends with that nervous mare, considering last night she almost bit him when he got to close. Why though? All the other times she didn't try to bite him. What was different? Okay sure their new caretaker was there by his side, but he didn't consider that little gal a threat, if anything she was gentle and much better then the men he had as old owners many other times. "Hmm, guess I just need to talk to other horses more. It's strange, back home there's races but never are they called such things as 'ocean of fire'. Kinda sounds dangerous if you ask me", he said with a bob of his head. True he was a fast little bugger when he wanted to be, but like the quarter horses back in the states that speed could only last for so long. Shivering at the thought of running in such a hot place Balius sent his dark mane into an unruly flurry into the air. "Well Charna, I gotta wish you the best of luck in this big race you're training for. If you ever need a training buddy just look me up; gotta keep myself in shape somehow", he said with a slight grin that folded at the very corners of his muzzle. The dun horse surely was not going to run in such heat entered in a race known as 'the ocean of fire', it just seemed like sucide to him. But, he would like to help Charna out, she seemed like a nice mare. Though he wouldn't admit this, she was his first friend in this strange place of sand and heat.

Charna smiled. "I'll remember that." She said, nodding. It would be nice to run with someone. Right now, whenever she ran, she could feel that she was quite fast, but... she had nobody to compare to, nobody to push herself against, and frankly, she knew deep down that she'd never really given her full in training. And she knew that her master knew too.

And then, there it was... without her minding it...
"See, mebbe this guy's no' bad, eh? What'd I tell ye, m'arm? Never said this guy was no spy, now did I?"

"No, see, y'did, hun. I think you were the one what said he was a spy." She replied to herself wearily with a grumble. But then she realized that Balius was still there standing with her.

"I-I'm sorry. It just comes out, I don't know where it's coming from..." She stammered.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 04, 2006 6:22 pm

Hearing that she would allow him to train with her made his ears perk in eagerness, the stallion may be small and he may be older then horses here, but he loved to run and he loved to move. Get some sugar into this guy and surely he would be bouncing off the walls, despite his calm demeaner. He was about to reply with a hearty 'that's wonderful!' when he heard her once again with the spy talk. It confused him slightly for he couldn't quite follow just what she was talking about, but he kept any sort of look out of his eyes; that wouldn't be polite you see. Listening carefully as she responded to herself he figured out that it was in fact some sort of conversation, but not with him. Who then? "Don't worry about it", he said at first when she stammered to him, then slowly extended his muzzle so he could be more at eye level with her. "No idea where it came from either, but what do you say to a nice walk out in the sands. I think it's getting cooler, either that or I'm just getting use to it", he decided a nice walk could do them both some good, he because he needed to get in shape and wanted to move, and her to keep her mind away from whatever that was bothering her.

She nodded. "Yea, that'd be great." She smiled at his last comment, but her mind was far off. Oh how she wished that the phantom companion she had brought to life over the years had never existed. She wished that it would just disappear. She wanted to live like all the other horses seemed to live their lives. Free.

The Voice, it controlled so much of what she did. Agonizing fear from what it said to her, fear of being rejected from the herd again. It was horrible. It said things that brought her entire spirit down. But after all, it was just a Voice... But no, it was more than just a voice. It was like another side of her, a side made up of crippling hate and fear.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 04, 2006 7:10 pm

Balius had already started to turn and walk away when he noticed that his new friend was not by his side. Craining his neck around the tan arab took a glance over his shoulder, and noticed Charna seemed to be off in her own world at the moment. Though where he was quiet he had learned to read other's fairly well, and knew something was not right. Nickering at her he hoped to get her attention once more and away from her dwelling, whatever it was that had her so wound up in whatever she was thinking about. "Come on then Charna, not gonna let a rusty old stallion get the best of ya by walking ahead are ya?" he joked lightly gently. Now if he were back in the states with his old masters, he had no doubt the grandkids would be jumping on and off his back all day, poor Balius was just to kind hearted to care about stuff like that.

Charna blinked and shook her head, trying to rid the thoughts. "Sorry." She said, trotting to catch up with him. "Just... thinking about stuff." She shrugged as she caught up, slowing to a walk. "Kinda hard to... keep from saying something I don't want to say, y'know?"

Balius kept his even past, head bobbing up and down as he walked with steady hooves and legs. hearing her come up he glanced over his shoulder slightly to get a good look at her once again. "Yeah, Sometimes I can't help the things I say. Or when I was younger at least, don't know if it's the same thing or not but sometimes anger got the best of me", it was a bit surprising that such a calm horse could once be angry, but like stated before, Balius had some years on him.

"But you didn't talk to yourself like there was another horse right there beside you, right?" Charna sighed, shaking her head. "I just... Ugh! I want it all to be gone! Whenever I try to fall asleep, all I can see are... are dead bodies and I can almost hear the gunshots from when..." She shut her eyes, wincing at the thought. Panic, chaos... Gunshots. Horses tripping and falling, never to rise again, she could see and hear it all. And she didn't want to.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 05, 2006 7:48 pm

Balius stopped all the sudden when she started talking again, but this time he didn't think he could keep the calm in those emerald green eyes. Silently he listened as she revealed something even couldn't wish upon a great enemy. The dun stallion could say nothing, but he felt for her, to have to see that... he understood partially of why she talked to herself now. Slowly the stallion turned his body so he could at least partly face her, his mind going into countless graphics of the scene she painted for him. He didn't know if it would help but he stayed steady where he was and lifted a narrow muzzle the best he could in order to blow soft warm breath on her nose. He did stay silent for a while, just letting her know he was still there; till he got up the nerve to say something. "I'm not going to stand here and pretend I know how you feel, cuz even with my age I don't. But that must have been horrible. All I can tell you is it's over now, it's gone, you're not there", he started out, his voice a fraction of his usual height and tone. Delicate even. "But, if you need someone, for anything, to talk to or whatever; I'm here. And I can listen", he wanted to try and help, that had to be a horrible experiance for a horse to go through.

Charna took a breath. It was like she was drowning in the memories of times long past... She wanted to tell someone. She wanted to tell Balius all that had happened. But in truth, she'd never known fear until that day, and had never known fear like that to this day. And really, all she was afraid of was being afraid again.

"I didn't come from such a good place to here." She said finally. "It was... bad. The horses were like property, not life. And we were all divided up into color. I was the biggest one of the gray horses, and they all teased me, and I really didn't have anyone to talk to." She stopped. Images flashed through her mind. Painful images. "It... It wasn't always like that, though. Before, we lived around an oasis, and everyone was happy. I... I was only a yearling at that time."

She stopped again, closing her eyes to bring up the memories for the first time in so many years.

"It all seemed like a normal day. We woke up, and everyone was happy. Then, about halfway through the day, suddenly, there were yells. And huge bangs, which I later learned were gunshots. The air had gone all muggy and there was this... smell. This smell that made you sick to the stomach. There was screaming everywhere, people running. All these horses fell and never got up. It was like those people had... had magic.
"There was screaming from both horses and people, and I had no idea what was happening. I saw riders and horses rushing into the midst. I couldn't run. My legs wouldn't move... And then my master, he grabbed my mane and led me away. He kept saying it was all good, it was all okay. But I could see that he was terrified.
"He'd almost made it out with me when there was a shot louder than any I'd heard all day. And my master... I'll never forget that look on his face. He was shocked. And his eyes kept saying over and over how sorry he was that we didn't make it away. He stood there, grabbing my mane for a moment more before he slid to the ground.
"I could smell the blood everywhere. It was like the whole world was covered in a veil of red. I stood with my master. I wasn't going to run off without him. Oh no. And then suddenly... It all stopped. But by then, the air was so thick with the smoke from the gun barrels that it was like a cloud had dropped from the sky. I saw riders riding and appearing in and out of the mist, poking dead bodies with their guns.
"Most of the horses, they'd spared, but few of our original tribe survived, and those that did were eitehr killed or enslaved. And it was from then on that life took a bad turn..."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 05, 2006 9:46 pm

Balius was quite shocked to hear about all that happened, and was even more surprised that Charna was actually still here and standing after an experiance like that. It was a story that even he couldn't quite comprehend fully and believe it as truth. But a single look into that mare's eyes and anyone would know it was true. No one could make up a story like that out of spite or attention-seeking. Unsure of what to do, or even if he could do anything the small stallion tentively reached up to touch her cheek, but drew back incase it was unwanted. Comforting wasn't something he was to good at, but he cared to much not to try. "That's horrible, how those horses teased you, what you went through, your master... I want to help you. But I'm not sure how", he spoke once again. Still that scene was painted into his mind, those emerald eyes were struggling to force that calm back into them. After hearing a story such as that it was all he could do, wanting to help, it was in his blood and struck a heart string with him.

She opened her eyes at his words, forcing a smile that she knew seemed fake. "I don't blame them, really." She said truthfully. "They all learned if from the humans. I blame them. The raiders." She shook her head. "Why do humans do things like that, Balius? Why can't they live in peace with each other. And other animals. Maybe if they knew life without war, life would be a better place to be."
