A little while ago, I used up the last of what I had of a sage smudge. I really like using it, seeing as it is renowned for it's spiritually cleansing effects. But I don't have any access to metaphysical shops, or even the money to invest in such things.

I was planning, however, to start a small little spice garden, and I got to thinking. What is the common type of sage used for smudging? I know that there are about five different types of sage. Are they all useful in this manner? Or is there a specific kind of sage that's supposed to be used? Not to mention, where I can find seeds for anything other than typical, Italian Sage?

Can anyone help me? If I can make my own smudges, it sould be a lot easier, not to mention cheaper. Plus, it would be a nice addition to a spice garden (if I ever get mine off the ground. . . >.< wink .

[edit from the captain: I modified the title to cover the entire conversation. ^_^]

You know, you might want to look into asking MadGoddessDagan. She's rarely on, but she's also my sister, so I'll pester her into logging on. XP

Not actually sure what smudging is. I'm into magic for 3 years by now, but I use dutch terms as I live in Belgium.
hmm, I know Desert Sage (or white sage called over here) is common used in Belgium to cleanse the aura, and said to be the best one too.

If smudging is cleansing the house, I would recommend lavender (second placed, also used to get rid of unwanted entities) or Dragon's Blood (best of all, also used for strong defensive spells)

I think- think, mind you- that smudging is where you take a bundle of the herb, light it and blow it out like incense, and then waft the smoke with a "smudging" motion, like you're rubbing the air. I know my sisters use it to cleanse their homes of evil spirits.

Hmm, then that is what I do with Desert Sage, but to cleanse the aura of a person. For the house (as far as I actually do that) , I'm lazy, I burn lavender essence sticks X3

Ais- about your initial question- XD I have a sage plant that's overwhelming its space in my garden. Is there anything special that you have to do to a sage smudge to make it... you know, special, or can I just bundle the leaves and send one to you?

In response to Raven, yes, smudging is used to cleanse aura and the spirit of an area. I dont know if you use cirlces to cast your magic, but I know that I do and to cleanse the area, I use a sage smudge. Some do use lavender, but sage tends to be a bit more powerful and effective. As for Dragon's Blood, I don't really use it much seeing as I hardly ever cast defensive magic. Most of my spellwork runs toward healing magic and devination.

Back to Kyoki, I would love it if you would send that sage in a bundle to me! I could definetly use it. I think that it has to be consecrated before it can be used as a smudge, but I already know how to do all that. If you need my address, I'll send it to you via PM, ok?

Definitely. I have waaay too much sage right now. XD I don't know it's species, and do you want it dried here or would you rather dry it yourself?

Whichever way it's easier to send it to me, that's the way I'll take it. I can dry it if you want to send it whole, and if you want to dry it for me, I'll wait. Whatever's easiest for you Kyoki. xd

How about dried for about three hours- no danger of mold, but still flexible enough to fold however you want. ^_^

PM me your addy, I'll get that out to you.

I actually used a circle only once, and that was in my first ritual to make a talisman. I don't know why, but I never felt the need to draw one otherwise, even if it is ment to protect.
My spellwork is widespread in knowledge, but I guess my rituals (for the few times I do them) and essential use is mainly healing, energy transfer/meditation-based and divination (a very small part, clairsensing mainly).
I have sage, lavender and dragon's blood though. I like having different scents, oils, candles and herbs even if I rarely use them xp

Hey, whatever works for you. Not everyone who practices magic does it the same way. Kinda like no two Christians practice their faith the exact same way.

Mhm! ^_^

I'll get that dried and in the mail by my next payday, Ais. >> I'm a little short on shipping, but it's light so it should only be just a bit longer.
