The elephant graveyard.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 27, 2004 7:19 am

That scraggly hyena was still wasting away her day, sleeping in the hazy fog of the Grave Yard. This time, it was a restless sleep. Dreams of lions chasing her, stealing away food straight from her mouth...It made her twitch and whine, rolling over into a particularly sharp bone. "Erk--..!", she bolted upright, looking around in confusion. "What? Huh? .." Grumbling, she swatted the bones away and glared around. "It's deffinetly too early for me to get up.."

"Oor?" Ed wonders intelligently as a bone smacks square into him. Luckily it was his head, so... No damage done. He sniffles in Shenzi's general direction and breaks into a huge grin. YAY! "Oo! OOH!" He grunts, pointing at what looks to be a pile of stones he's gathered together... Like there weren't already enough of THOSE in the graveyard! However, this one is special.

There's a bug on top of it. SQUEE!

Her head hunched low beneath her shoulders, as if she were sulking. In reality, she was wincing. Those yellow eyes turned to watch first Ed, then eye the rocks in a curious, disdainful way. "..What, Ed?". Blinking, her large ears perked up as she spotted the bug, before she rolled her eyes and gave an exagerated groan. "..Well, that's great, Ed. Really, you've proven your skills at finding food are far superior to all of ours.." She refrained from making some sort of "rock for brains" joke, without Banzai around, it wouldn't be as funny. Ed wouldn't get her wit.

Ed really didn't get anything. He was just happy he seems to have earned Shenzi's praise! He did recognize the word 'great,' but most of the other stuff that was said got lost in the translation. Mainly because Ed was concentrating on eating the bug, because out of all the words, he also recognized 'food.'

So. Overall translation:

Bug = GREAT FOOD. Hooah.

Actually, it wasn't that good, but Shenzi said it was. And she was the smartest hyena ever and she was always right except for when she wasn't. Which might have been often, Ed didn't know. Unfortunately, the Bug = GREAT FOOD is gone, and so all he has to offer the alpha now is... Well. Rocks. And so he picks up a mouthful, fiddles his way over to Shenzi, and drops them at her feet. Yum!

Within the graveyard there was another. A long, sleek, majestic lion prowled along the cliffs and bones. Scar, black mane concealing his face, glared upon the hyena as they searched for food. Within his grasp a single wildebeast hindquarter, a "gift" if you will. The scent of meat would surely drive the hyenas in his direction, so silently he remained perched atop the largest skull in the grave yard. "come and get it you filthy slobbering, mangy stupid poachers..." he muttered, having heard that phrase somewhere before.

OOOH! OOH! There's that smell! It smells like... Poo! No, wait. THAT wasn't quite it, was it. All Ed knows is that it's a good smell, and he could either roll around in it or eat it... Which covers just about everything. Fun rollable things of course included dust, mud, elephant bones, food, and the occasional small lion. Edible things covered a much broader spectrum... And of course, some things crossed over into both categories. For example, dust, mud, elephant bones, food, and the occasional small lion.

Ed was an equal opportunity idiot.

The rocks are forgotten, and his head turns toward the smell... And Scar. Oh! There was that thing that smelled like lion but hung out in the graveyard. Yeah, Scar was cool. And Shenzi tended to respect him. And Scar also brought fun things to roll around in and eat.

However, rolling around on Scar was off-limits. T'was a hard earned lesson, but one of those rare remembered ones.

"Ed, why don't you do something useful like find REAL foo--..", she trailed off, forgetting the pile of rocks Ed had so laborously donated to her. Eyes wide, large ears perked straight up like huge arrow heads, she rose to her feet and smelled the air. "..You smell that? THAT smells like food..", of course, the smarter part of her food oriented brain picked up the scent of Scar, as well. "..But that is NOT food, for certain. Eh.."

There was only one lion she ever saw around here, and that was Scar. As it were, she slunk out of the skull and scampered some feet further, turning to look up at the black maned lion perched atop it. Then, she became all smiles and gesture. "Oh, Scaaar..It's so great to see you! Why, I was just talking to Ed here, " she paused to look around for the spoken hyena, "..Talking to him about how amazing you were, not like all those other lions.." Grin, bristle, try not to drool..Work for the food, that was the job here.

Talking to? Mmn. More like talking at. Things just went in one ear and out the other. It was a fast-track through open air with no stops on the way. Processing information was passe, apparently.

He faithfully toddles along after Shenzi, as the scent of lion and food gets stronger. She hadn't been talking about how amazing Scar was, but Ed wasn't telling. In fact, he wasn't saying much of anything, and seemed incredibly happier for it.

In response to Shenzi's not-begging, he oozes a great puddle of drool at her feet. Yay. Having done this, something seems to snap into place within the vacant area between his shoulders, and Ed has a single moment of clarity - whereby he realizes that the scent of lion and the scent of I-can-possibly-roll-around-in-that/food is coming from the same place. GASP! Oh, and he wants. He wants it bad. And he has no qualms about begging for it, which he does.

Scar's smile grew more malicious as he stood atop his perch. In his own mind he was king of these beasts, yet still in the Monarchy there were two to be delt with. With the recent birth of Simba, Scar felt his hold on the crown loosening, this angered the black lion and so he sought refuge the only place he could find it. He looked down to Shenzi, watching her as they came toward him. "I see..." He said lifting the wildebeast leg high. "Perhaps something...to wet your appetite..." He added slyly, tossing the leg down to them. In his mind the wheels were churning...something had to be done...and quick.

Perking immediately, she leaped wildly upon the meat and began tearing off huge chunks, chewing as she spoke in Scar's direction. "So what exactly brings you to visit little old us, Scar?" It was a frenzied, disgusting sight, the way the leg was being devoured. Every meal could be her last, she had to keep that constantly in mind...But also on her mind was the wondering thought of what Scar was going to ask them to do, for why else would he bring them just a nice snack?

"EEEeeeee!! HeheeeHaMmph!"

Where it started as a high-pitched laugh, it quickly dies into muffled giggles as Ed, too, tears into the leg. One instinct in his mind wins over the other, and he decides not to play with this one... Not yet anyway. See, the little voices in his tummy had been talking to him for days, and he was getting tired of hearing them argue!

If he wanted to hear arguing, he could just listen to Shenzi and Banzai. That was fun! And Ed always won those arguments. Always.

The grand thing about this is Ed doesn't care - or even realize - that this is a bribe. That makes it all the more enjoyable, 'cuz whatever follows... Whatever Scar has them do - It's going to be fun. And he's going to like it. And he's going to laugh. And suddenly it's time to play Chase-the-Hyena-with-the-Food! Thusly, he valiently tries to tug it out of Shenzi's grasp.

"Can I not bring a promise to my friends?" He said slyly, curling his toes beneath his chin. "You see...there is more where that came from." Said Scar as he watched the frenzy of food being devoured. He sneered upon them, his eyes holding them in contempt.

Gripping the meat in her teeth, she snarled and held her ground at Ed's tugging, finally ripping her chunk free and no doubt sending Ed on a rolling journey. Swallowing her mouthful, she gave Scar a flattering grin, but doubtful gaze. "Right, a free gift", unable to keep a straight face, she burst into brief laughter, coughing to slow it down as she spoke on. "Whens the last time you ever gave anyone something for nothing?"

Though mostly oblivious to the conversation (As he happily rolls away with his prize in his teeth) Ed does realize that this in one of those 'serious' talks he's been warned about. Where he's not clear on the exact meaning of 'serious,' he does know he's supposed to be quiet and well-behaved while such things are going on.

Yeah. Right.

He rips off a good-sized portion of the meat for himself - which he swallows whole - Then starts in on what could be some sort of elaborate leaping dance number... Before he chucks the remainder of the leg back at Shenzi's head. Then he dissolves into a gigglefit.
