Do any of you ever throw away your completed characters?

Do you re-build characters that you don't like? Start from their "outline" again?

I have a few characters that I have kept for years, and I absolutly love them. I re-write their backgrounds many times, add new details to them, and I feel... Close to them. But throughout that time I have had many other characters that I created, and I was even very happy with some of them. I had a few for a while, but then they just faded away. However sometimes I will think of them while creating a new character, and put a little bit of some of them into this new character.

So, I think I do throw away characters, but then later pieces of them get seperated into other new characters, as well.

I don't think I have EVER been like "Oh, I don't like this character, so I'm going to make him/her better!" though.

When creating a new character, maybe not even a main character, what do you think about first? How do you fit it all together and do you make their personality show on their body? (What I mean is like, if you make your character very optimistic, do you dress them in many bright colors?)

Quick thing to say... nice sig. <3

And now, onto what I was going to say. ... Hmm. I think I do pretty much the same thing you do. I have about twenty characters, and though I change them alot in different ways, I don't change their personality. Their backgrounds move abuot alot, and their appearances, how they dress, ect., but I never really change the character themselves. I used to write a story once, and I used the same character for each one, but it was a different person each time. Oo oO Does that make sense?

Yea, I think that makes sence. When I first started role-playing and writing I made every main female character with my name and used her everywhere! But slowly, I started uing new names and then started with completly new personalities. =)

I'm not sure how I create characters. Usually I just get a random personality in my head that I like and use that, or use an alternate version of myself or something. If I don't like a character, I'll usually end up just throwing them out. Mostly my characters are different in every story, but they all seem to have similar characteristics at the core.

Hm...I'm pretty sure my characters create themselvesin my head, at least the main ones do. They exist int ehir own right,a nd often my stories grow from those single people. I try, in my head, to move the characters into different situations to get them to know other characters, and for me to know their mindsets better. I rarely throw them away, and I really cant change their personalities. Only their settings. I love my characters too much to change them. They are all very much like children to me. I hope that makes some sense.

Makes sense to me.

Thinking about it now, I really don't put a lot of thought into them. I'll get a plot idea, and the characters really seem to form on their own. I'll only throw them out if I really can't stand their personalities, but that's not too often.

My characters come from random spots. It used to be I based them off of characters I liked from TV shows, but I think I'm getting over that. My characters are constantly changing and evolving. And many of them have been thrown away. Actually, I'd say about 95% of all of my characters have been thrown out. I always end up hating them at some point, I dunno why. Here's how my current characters came into being:

Lei Feng was originally used for an FMA RP. I wanted to use a character from the country Xing, but due to that country not being elaborated on much in the series, I only had about four personalities and positions to guess from. She started out being kind of quiet and honorable, come to think of it. That's all gone down the drain. ^^; Her character's evolved over time.

Mirelle is based off of myself, in a sense. She started out as a five year old girl. Since I didn't have much basis for five year olds, I made her exactly like me as a five year old. Except her mom's a lot less caring. And she stays snotty throughout the rest of her life.

Cyril is the result of a male character I had almost a year ago evolving. Started out as an Alphonse(FMA character)/Male-Sutafuzz clone named Zephyr. Quiet, calm, patient, etc. He slowly turned into Felix, who was at first a more bland and boring character. Then he started to shift to the opposite end of the spectrum and became someone who was kind of falsely friendly. Then that became Cyril, who had dropped in IQ very slightly. Since then, Cyril's just become a lovable oaf who happens to be very popular without him making much of an effort.

Of course, no one's gonna bother to read that. But hey, its there if you're curious.

Let's see...my first five characters have been developing for nearly six years (kept rewriting my story to make it more realistic as I got older) and the rest of the characters just pop up and introduce (or avoid introduction) themselves. I'm as new to some of them as the readers.

My poor characters...they're like zombies that I keep alive by giving them new body parts...
...*cough*
Uhm...
Well, I usually come up with new characters for new stories, but usually those characters have a lot of elements from other characters. I think I have about twenty base characters, and every time I create a new one I take something from at least one of them.
I base some of my characters on my friends, too. So they're kind of like my zombies too...<.<
and then sometimes I just totally forget about characters and they kidn of fade into the dark corner in the back of my brain.
And then there are some that just kind of pop up as I write and say "HELLO I'M IN THE STORY NOW WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT!"

most of my charactors come and go. i create one for an RP and say 'okay. this charactor is awsome!' and then by the next day, i have forgotten them. XDi do have a couple that i have stuck with for several months(XD) but, thats about it. and for a while there all of my RP charactors where either from fudel Japan, or had long black hair with red/blue/some color streaks in it. XD .... and so now i have several charactors that i like that i think i will keep.... if i remeber them after tommarow. XD (just kidding)

Hmn. I often get angry with my characters because they take over, and kill them off.

Then, I bring them back, because I'm corny like that. gonk
