One of the most time consuming things whenever it came to updating GEN comes down to the calculations and formatting update information. So it's an idea that if there's anyone with the ability to, we could put together a rather simple program to aid with portions of the updating process that wouldn't be affected if they were automated.

Since I nor SGaz have any experience with programming, a lot of thought hasn't been put into what would be required or what exactly is wanted yet. So far though, what we were thinking is that after proof links have been validated, that the item name and proof link prices could be entered (as well as the link to the thread or vend log, but that will come in later) and with those prior item prices (so yeah, if this is ever made, we'd have to start by entering all the current data before using it, weeeee @w@), ran through the same (or better) algorithms already used to update the prices, and at the end of entering everything pop out the text for the Update Log using the current post format (and from there the calculated prices could be taken and edited into the guild by hand).

We're not particular about format or what programming language or form you can or want to use (and really not joking here. If it does was we want, it's A-ok in our books!). Since this is only going to be something accessed by people updating, all it's going to need is text (and probably some crappy little boxes) so no need for fancy stuff. Let me really stress the simple aspect! Lol

In the event you would want to be reimbursed for your time, let us know and maybe we can work something out (though free/credited is cool too -hinthint- pirate )

SO, if you're even the slightest bit interested, please post here and let us know.
If there's a prefered manner in which you'd want us to contact you about it, put that in your post as well -nodnod- And of course, if you have any ideas (even those of you who are just as savy with this sort of thing as SGaz or I) feel free to post any related ideas here as well ^___^

Didn't Danomator come up with something like that for the Database at one point?

Or actually, you could probably do what you're thinking of (if I understand it correctly) in plain old MS Access.

At least as far as what I could described could definately be done on Access (I suck qwith that though too XD).

And yeah, it was Dano.
though i'm not sure if the system was the same or not or if the database for mostly more display and keeping track @w@

First of all, sorry for not answering earlier. xd I just...lol...didn't see this thread. whee

The latest version of the GEN Database had a feature very similar to what you're talking about. Meaning a script which automatically generates the prefered BBCode with chosen data for use in Gaia posts. I originally created this system to quicken the thread updating progress.

Whatever, GEN activity was already down at this time and therefore this feature has never been used.

In any case...When the marketplace reached the world of Gaia, more and more people began to use this instead of using priceguides. And since tektek is ripping the latest data directly from Gaia's marketplace source code, it's very difficult to keep a priceguide as up-to-date as tektek, thus also difficult to keep a priceguide popular. Of course, tektek does not always tell us the right prices as many items are sold for much more in the marketplace as they're worth in the exchange forum. So a proofed priceguide would still be useful, no doubt.

But a priceguide needs a lot of active updaters and proof searchers. Especially since Gaia has much more items than at GEN's best times. So...such a script won't really help anyone, if we can't keep the prices up-to-date... sweatdrop
