General Faq 1. How much do one of these cost? They don't cost anything if you recieve them through writing contests or flatsales. Auctions however, go for however high they go.
2. May I have one of these? Not for doing nothing. Questers who have concepts that catch my eye (or are extremely dedicated) may get free nymphs.
3. Am I allowed more than one? You can have as many as you like. Go wild with it. Just don't be greedy. ^_~
4. Alright, then how about pet trades or an autobuy? There is an autobuy, but I'm not really into getting any pets.
5. What does the artist use to draw all these things in? Corel Painter IX, using the scratchboard tool from start to finish.
6. I'm a lurker- can I participate in RP? Unfortunately, no. Cantumwood is an alternate universe, and I don't see how anyone else than the creatures who were born on the planet could have gotten there.
7. So these are rp intensive? Not one bit. Don't feel obligated to roleplay if you don't want to. Your nymph will grow no matter what you do. But please, don't just show up in the thread for one and then drop off the face of the Earth. That's rude.
8. I'm leaving/going on a hiatus/ect! That's fine. Owners planning to leave for any period of time, make sure to tell me. That way I can put any growings on the back burner and get to people who are more active. If you no longer want your nymph, you may give them back to me. You may not sell them or give them away, and you will not get a refund.
9. How many 'types' of a certain tree will be available? For all intents and purposes, I'm only going to allow one male and one female of the same type of tree. There are a bunch of different variations of one tree, pick one of those if your chosen species is taken.
10. For customs, can we use extinct trees? Of course. If you can use mythical trees, then you can go for a prehistoric/extinct tree.

Roleplay Related A very good question How much of a paradise/Garden of Eden is Cantumwood, and do the usual brutal rules of nature still apply?
Cantumwood is the metaphorical equivalent of America. It is rich in many natural resources, and animals can afford to be more relaxed about their own survival. Many factors have been eliminated to make living easier: No snow, barely any rain, and the plants are constantly heavy with blooms and fruit. There are little to no deadly diseases in the wood, and there is plenty of living space. Droughts, famine, and natural disasters do not exist inside.
Unfortunately, the brutal rule of survival of the fittest still applies. Carnivores must still eat meat, and predators must still kill. Plants can still wither. Trees can still rot and be subject to various parasites. Crime still happens, whether it is for better or for worse. Roleplay Faq 1. What do we call the planet Cantumwood is on? Are we allowed to call it 'Earth'? Many creatures call it 'The World'. The planet has no name, but it isn't Earth.
2. What's it like in The World? It is an exact parallel to our Earth, save humans. There are a few magical entities, but for the most part, there is nothing out of the ordinary.
3. So... there are no people? No, humans don't exist... yet.
4. What is the exact setting of each location? Unfortunately, there is no 'exact setting' for anything. There is a rough, general outline- A 'Desert with such and such', or a 'Grotto with this and that'. I leave the details up to you.
5. How often do the residents of Cantumwood see the Great Spirit? How should they treat him if they come into contact? The Great Spirit is basically the head honcho. The God. The lord of everything in Cantumwood's territory. He does wander around the wood, but it is rare that he makes himself seen, unless something important is happening.
That being said, it depends on how your animal will treat him. Outside and even inside of the wood, the Great Spirit can seem little more than a fairytale. Think about it this way: How often would you think such a powerful being exists?
6. How often do the creatures see Mephitis, then? Mephitis is the opposite to the Great Spirit, and he is just (if not moreso) well known. His legacy of murder, greed, and corrupt behavior can be fiction, or it can be fact.
He has never given his name, and therefore is only known as the 'Blank Scale Beast'.
7. What exactly are the boundaries placed for my roleplay? Whatever your mind can grasp, it is yours to do within reason.
8. What about names? Can I name my nymph Sally? That's just it- there are no names. Nymphs are called their tree names- 'Mangrove', 'Olive', ect. Animals are named their usual- 'Fox', 'Badger', ect. Nymphs and animals can have nicknames, but they must have a reason behind it.
9. Then why does Moratoris/Mephitis have a complex name? It's complicated, and it's saved for a plot device. wink For right now, however, you can keep wondering.
10. How does my guardian recieve the branch and fruit? The Great Spirit will either pay them a visit, or call them forth, and send them to go fetch it. I'll usually ask in-thread if anyone is up for roleplay with the Great Spirit, and I will usually be the one starting.
This is optional. If you don't want to roleplay, than you don't have to. However, if you're planning to roleplay, this step has to be taken into account.
11. After my guardian gets the branch and fruit, do they bring it back to the Great Spirit? Nope. Your guardian keeps the branch until it's ready to grow. Since is information is OOC, it's up to your animal if they try to find him or not.
12. My guardian can't exactly pick up a branch, or is too tiny to guard it well... Use other forces to help, or choose a different animal. A fish is going to have problems guarding a branch, but it doesn't mean that these complications won't be fun.
13. What do we call the nymphs? Either their stage names, or whatever you can think of, really. Treeling, Forest folk, Tree Sprite... ect.
14. Do nymphs eat? Yes, and no. Since nymphs are still plants, they don't need to physically eat things. They can if they want. More importantly, nymphs need to be in an environment that suits their plant best. I doubt an evergreen would be the same if it traveled to the desert. Who knows, they might even wither if they get sick.
15. Do nymphs have their own language? Yes, they do. They are the only ones that can talk to the trees and plants (Not even the Great Spirit can), but they're also capable of talking to animals/insects/ect.
16. Can nymphs reproduce? Yes they can, but since they don't have any reproductive organs, sex is out of the question. Nymphs can reproduce at Dryad stage, through a process called 'cutting'. Each parent basically cuts a part of themselves off (a finger, a twig from their hair, ect.) and plants it.
The Great Spirit will come by and bless the tree cuttings, allowing a new nymph to be born.
17. Since my nymph came from a tree, does this mean that they can change with the seasons? You bet! A treeling will bloom depending on the time of year, and deciduous nymphs will probably go bald in winter! Just an interesting aspect of roleplay, and a fun little quirk of trees.
18. Do nymphs live in homes or structures? Nymphs live anywhere that the forest provides naturally- badger dens, hollow trees, a meadow, ect. They don't chop down trees for lumber, or pull grass for twine, or any of that, since they live to upkeep the forest.
19. Did my nymph have a past life? Nope. Your nymph was not reincarnated, they do not have past memories, and they don't have any sort of power until it is given to them.
20. And one more thing... how much does my nymph know when they are born? Absolutely nothing. They'll probably think they're whatever species your guardian is, to be humorous.
Think about just coming into the world and experiencing everything for the first time. They won't know anything- they won't know about the moon, the sun, the sky, time, or anything about other animals. Heck, they'll probably be intrigued by water.
It's largely up to you what they learn. Just remember, they come into the world as a blank slate.
