I’ve come to realize that the growing commercialization of Christmas actually may be as bad as everyone says. I noticed that some stores started setting up x-mas decorations in September. It seems that a single day (that Christ was born, according to Christianity) has turned into a multi month long holiday. September, October, November, December, and a little bit into January. That’s approximately, 3 to 4 months that this holiday is in control of the commercial market. In other words, what used to be a single day has turned into a ¼ yearlong process. Christmas now cuts into thanksgiving, new years eve/day, and even Halloween. Towards the beginning of October I overheard a store official and one of his workers talking about how they will compress the Halloween section so they could add even more to the x-mas section which already covered about 20% of the store shelves.

Do you believe that x-mas has gone too commercial?

When would you say is a good time for stores to start with the x-mas goods?

What are some of your experiences with such matters?

Ah, something that has bugged me for many years. I remember one card store selling Christmas cards in the middle of July surprised I live in England, so we don't celebrate Thanks giving, but I remember they did a Happy Grandperants day in September too, just to make money.

However, it does cut into Guy Fawks night, people are more interested in Christmas presents then Guy Fawks night. It's sad that people are more interested in getting presents when watching some lovely fireworks remebering the gun powder plot that nearly destroyed the houses of Parliment.

What I also hate is that either shops will make thier stuff more exspensive or stupidly cheap. It's good and bad for me, being a uni student, but it means I have to fork out money and waste it on presents when I could spend it on food and equipment I need to pass me degree, and I feel bad if I don't give at least something for Christmas. sweatdrop

I think that a lot of people really have forgotten that true meaning of Christmas. They should at the earliest advertise x-mas at the end of October and end of November at the latest.

christmas for alot of stores bring in a nice size of profit, so the sooner they start, the more profit, i suppose. especially if they have these week long sales, where you can ''FOR A LIMITED TIME, BUY AN I-POD FOR 250.00 AND THEN GET ANOTHER FOR 200.00'' whee yaaay.

on a side note // i love christmas. the snow, and the presents, and the feeling of just, waking up at nine in the morning, and feeling the chill, and drinking some hot choco, and then cuddling with the person you love under a blanket.

I would love it if I didn't have to see anything to do with christmas until after thanksgiving. One of the radio stations started playing christmas music 24/7 the day after halloween (the only good thing about that is I get to months of not having to switch stations every other song when the kids are in the car).

It's way to commercialized. If it's not for toys it's for credit cards... basically they want everyone to get into thousands of dollars of debt just for one day.
Personally, I keep trying to get my family to celebrate christmas a week later that way I can get everything at clearance price the day after christmas.

Yeah, its ridiculous, Christmas comes AFTER Thanksgiving, not BEFORE Halloween.

Why cant it just be like the good ol days, when you were just happy that Jesus was born?

and for the people that don't believe in jesus? o:

Strange how commercialization has transformed a religious holiday to the extreme of no longer hardly being religious. People who don't even believe in the birth of Christ still celebrate Christmas (which, if I am not mistaken, means something about Christ, and maybe mass?) Hmmm, perhaps in the future it will be changed to something like shopathonsday, or something more commercial and no longer religious based.

Depends, most of the Chirstian holidays were taken from pagen/Roman holidays, so really we're actually celebrating a pegan/Roman holiday wink

well, in a very optimistic desperate-job-seeker point of view, the commercialization of christmas will get me a job for the season. YAY!!! shallow? yes... productive? yes.... mrgreen .

yeah, every year, I look to see how early it comes. >.<

This year though, I'm making all my presents. Unless I can't make somethign for someone, like my brother- (but he doesn't deserve anything)

Meh, it's a job. People need to make money somehow, and i don't mind Christmas decorations. It gets me in the mood, and the earlier you buy presents the easier it is on your budget.

Sure, sure, you can blame it all on comercialism, but to me, despite how early they go up in stores, Christmas is all the same.

whee Family, waking up early, stockings, shiney wrapping paper, sparkling Christmas lights, garland, decorating the tree, turkey can't forget the turkey, and OLD-FASHIONED Christmas music, none of this new- fandangled crap or that hip-hop, or "git me somma' dat bling-bling in my here stocking, yo. So be deckin' the halls wit' dem christmas balls o' holly" bullshit.
I want REAL Christmas tunes.

Christmas wasn't always a religious tradition...Santa didn't really come from the bible, i think. I'm not sure if he was born out of consumerism, but he is still a large part of a Christmas tradition. (Coca Cola totally owns rights to Santa Clause, btw. How stupid is that?) My boyfriend's family is Roman Catholic and they celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. So it's really up to whom-ever is celebrating it, and their beliefs.

I do believe the Christmas has become too comercial. There's nothing wrong with light decorations, trees, and family gatherings, it's just the over excessive gift giving, houses overfilled with lights, and many more things, are taking over the whole idea of christmas.

It's not about that gifts, or lights, it's about being with your family, and sharing a special moment with those you love. But now it's become sucha big thing where you have to give gifts and decorate. Perosonally, I think we need to slow down again and find the true meaning to Christmas.

*rant-mode*
I'm so sick of everyone saying that Christmas, Easter, etc. are Pagan holidays!* Yes, they are celebrated at the same time of the year, but they are not the same thing. To my knowledge, yule (and other pagan holidays durring december) were not even celebrated on the 25th. They were celebrated based on when the winter solstice fell. (the pagan holiday around Easter had something to do with the spring equinox) So, basically, people are saying that because the two hollidays are celebrated around the same time, the second holliday is just a remake of the first. If that's true, one could say just as easily that when you celebrate Christmas, you are really celebrating Hanukka.
The meaning of a holliday is not based off of the day you celebrate it, but rather what it is you are celebrating. I celebrate the birth of Jesus, one of the most amazing things to happen as far as my religion is concerned, not the fact that it's winter.
*end-rant*

*ahem* Getting back to the OP . . . .
I agree that Christmas is way too much of a consumers holliday now. The real meaning of Christmas is Jesus.
However, because the comercial world has seperated christmas icons from religion (honestly, how many people who know about Santa Clause also know about St. Nicholas?), Christmas has become more of a cultural holliday than a religious one. I'd be dissapointed about this if it weren't for the fact that the meaning of Christmas hasn't been completely lost.
From a Catholic perspective, the reason for the season is Jesus, but it's also love. (For God so loved the world that he gave his only son) Whether someone is Christian or not, the spirit of love really does make itself known in most people (religious or not) durring this time of the year. (Note: This was not meant to be an all inclusive statement. I realize that there are some mean people at Christmas time.)
