I think they are. I know I, personally, feel like an a** when I am a newb to any given fandom, simply because so many of the people who already knew about said fandom are so rude to newcomers.

Take RENT for instance. Now, I just saw the movie on Sunday night. I'd heard of it before, but never really knew what it was about. Then the film came out, and it looked good - looked like it might make me cry, and have some catchy songs along the way. Well, I was right - it made me cry. In fact, it made me all-out bawl. I've listened to the soundtrack upwards of ten times since Monday night. The ENTIRE film soundtrack...all 26 songs. I have fallen in love with the music, the story, the characters, the themes, the entire message and the show itself.

But I can't profess my love of RENT to a RENThead. Oh, no. Because I saw the movie first, and haven't seen it live. Because I wasn't an original fan. Because any newb to the fandom MUST be a fangirl, intent on proving Mark and Roger's secret undying homosexual love for one another and finding not-so-clever ways to off Mimi so their Mary Sue fanfics can work.

Then there's Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. My friend got me to read the first wo [the others aren't out yet] recently, and I love them now. She is a 'regular' on the Twilight Lexicon and its associated Chat, and she got me to join that, too. Now, this didn't happen to me, because my friend went in the Chat before I did and made sure everyone knew that I am her friend in real life and that they should be nice to me. However, when other new people join the chat, pretty much all the 'regulars' are automatically rude to the her/him. Simply because he or she is a newb.

Fans of almost everything are like this. If Person A knows about Band X before said band makes it big, Person A will shun Persons B, C, and D who found out about Band X after commercial success. It will be assumed by Person A that B, C, and D only like Band X due to its popularity - God forbid anyone else should agree with Person A that the band has amazing lyrics, guitar riffs, etc. No, of course not. If you find out about something when it becomes famous, you are a poser, no exceptions.

Potterheads, Ringers, Phans, and every other groups of fans [those with AND those without catchy names for themselves] are guilty of this. It's ridiculous. You'd think the fans would be glad that their obsession of choice is gaining more fans. That the band/books/play/movie/musical/whatever is becoming more successful. I don't get it.

I mean, obviously, not every RENThead is this prejudiced against people like me, and not every Lexicon Chat regular is a b***h to the newbs. In fact, the elitists are, by definition, the minority. I just wish they weren't such a vocal minority.

I know what you mean. I haven't really experienced it, since I tend to follow only a few fandoms and not interract with people who know them better, but I can say LotR. I avoid most of the subform because although I've been a fan for almost two decades, all I know is the trilogy and The Hobbit, and I'm nowhere near an expert even on those.

Oh, yeah. I have read the trilogy thrice and The Hobbit probably four times. I love LotR, but you would never catch me talking to a hardcore fan about it.

They'd kill me, haha.

Ha, yeah, I'm in the same boat there.

I'm a hardcore fan of maybe two fandoms, but even then I would never put down anyone for knowing less than me. I don't understand some people. rolleyes

With me, it's not elitist. It's not that a person is "less cool" than me.

It's just that they don't have the whole enchalada. Sure, that version may be cool, but what about the rest?

This is something fangirls do. They take only one part they like (Sephiroth, for example,) and then they make it an object of fascination (i.e. "HAY HEZ MAI BOYFREND AND HE NEVAR DIEDDD!!!!")

So if someone likes the movie - ESPECIALLY since movies try to cram a lot of good things into a sit-down experience, and usually cutting out some very interesting parts of the book, the play, what have you - usually I point them towards the past instances of it.

Example being what I'm just about to post here in a moment.

And se, that's how I get about things I like. If someone is professing their undying love of something to me but only know/want to pay attention to a part of it, I get irritated.

But yeah, the elitism is different...

In my opinion, elitists are worse than fangirls, because at least most fangirls don't act like they're better people because they are obsessed with something, whereas elitists act that someone is less of a person if that person only likes something after its famous.

I remember being around eleven or twelve years old and just getting interested in music, so of course all the really good bands that I ended up liking were already famous. However, whenever I said this, elitists would treat me like crap because I was only eight or nine when my favorite bands started playing, and therefore didn't get much of a chance to obsess over them in their lesser-known years. It really did drive me insane.

Recently I tried hanging out in the a/m/c forum and have regretted it ever since. Between the fangirls fighting over who owns which character, the narutards, and the subtitle elitists I went nuts. The people who claim that "you can only appreciate anime is if you hear it in Japanese" or "the Japanese voice actors are so much better" are starting to show up more and more.

Haha I've had the same experience.
Thought I do agree ... Anime is much better in its original Japanese audio.

As I do prefer subs, I've also heard some great dubs.. but anyway.. that aside, if people haven't finished reading, watching, a certain movie, manga, series, play, etc.. I usually don't mind or think I'm better off than them, in fact, I prefer people not to lay out spoilers for me.

Just that, there are those who claim to be such know-it-alls when they're not even that far ahead of the story. <-- THAT irritates me.

People in the NF, some of which create frickin' essays-- they might as well write a book about debating against Narusaku VS Sasusaku. To the point of it being ridiculous. No offense to Narusaku, but in a manga panel where Sakura just looks at Naruto, does NOT mean she is staring at him with love in her eyes. neutral

It seems people there are even more obsessed with pairings and couples in Naruto than the actual story...

Get with the program, people. Naruto is a shonen manga, it's not mainly about romance so stop turning it into one!!!

See. I could deal with relationships or realistic possibilities. THAT'S what bothers me - so little consideration for the character concept...
