#252 Treecko Interesting Fact: Treecko's name is a portmanteau of tree, being a surrounding of its natural habitat - the forest, and gecko, the animal it resembles. The Japanese name for Treecko is Kimori, a mix of "ki" ("tree") and "yamori" ("gecko"). Pokedex Entry: All Treecko have small hooks on the bottom of their feet which enable them to scale vertical walls. It attacks by slamming foes with its thick, double tail. It is very cool and calm, and it never panics under any situation. If a bigger Pokémon glares at Treecko, it glares right back without conceding an inch of ground. It makes its nest in a giant tree in the forest and guards against anything nearing its territory. It is said to be the protector of forest trees. It can predict the day's weather with its tail. #253 Grovyle Interesting Fact: Grovyle's name is most likely a cross between "grove" and "reptile", however, The "gro" could also be derived from "grow", indicating both plants, and a growing Pokémon, resembling Grovyle being a a Stage 1 Pokémon. But its name can also mean mangrove and reptile. Japanese name, Juptor, is likely a portmanteau of the words "jūmoku" ("arbour") and "raputoru," short for "Velociraptor." Pokedex Entry: Grovyle's appearance is styled after that of the gecko. It's a green lizard with a pink underbelly broken by a strip of green near its waist, which resembles a belt. Long, streaming leaves stem from its wrists, the top of its head, and its posterior. The leaves that grow out of Grovyle's body, as well as its matching green colouration, give it excellent camouflage against the background of its native habitats, the forests and jungles. Even if spotted, Grovyle has little trouble escaping danger. Its powerful thigh muscles make it very adept at climbing trees and jumping from branch to branch very quickly, disappearing into the forest before anyone can catch up to it. #254 Sceptile Interesting Fact: Sceptile's name may derive from the words "Scythe" (due to the large blades on its arms) and "Reptile". Its name may also be modeled off sceptre, meaning "royal" or "kinglike", as Sceptile is the "King of the Jungle." It may also derive from "scent" or "scented," representative of being Grass-type. Its Japanese name, Jukain, originates from "jukai," literally meaning "a sea of trees" or "abundant leafage". Pokedex Entry: Sceptile is a human-sized bipedal Pokemon with large, sharp, sword-like outgrowths on its arms, yellow orb-like seeds growing on its back which can heal injured plants, and a huge, razor-sharp complex tail not unlike a fern. Its body is configured for battling prowess and superior mobility in jungle environments. Owned By: No one yet

#255 Torchic Interesting Fact: The name Torchic is a portmanteau of the words torch, a flame or light used to see in darkness, and chick, a common name for infant chickens. The Japanese name for Torchic, Achamo, is a portmanteau of "aka," a term for "baby," and "shamo," a breed of Japanese bird, originally bred for fighting or hunting. Pokedex Entry: In the Pokémon universe, all Torchic are covered with a fluffy coat of down. Their small wings would be useless for flying; but, as a Torchic evolved into its later forms, Combusken and Blaziken, claws would slowly protrude from its wingtips, making it a potentially vicious fighter. The Pokédex describes Torchic as disliking darkness because it would prevent them from seeing their surroundings, regardless of proficiency with fire techniques. Before the legs of a Torchic would fully develop, they would stay with their Pokémon trainer, following behind with unsteady, hopping steps as it would learn to walk properly. They would also have a sac filled with churning fire deep within their stomach, allowing them to give literal "warm hugs" to their trainers. This powerful fire would also serve as a Torchic's ammunition in battles; when attacked, it would retaliate by spitting fireballs, at temperatures of over 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (980 °C), often leaving the foe scorched black. #256 Combusken Interesting Fact: Combusken is a portmanteau of the words combust and chicken. The origin of its Japanese name, Wakashamo, comes from "wakai," meaning "young," and "shamo", meaning "gamecock." Pokedex Entry: Combusken's legs are both fast and powerful, and to keep them at peak physical condition, many run through nearby fields and mountains to stay agile and strong. By doing this, Combusken can kick up to 10 times per second, not giving up easily. Like Torchic, Combusken has a place within its body that stores and produces incredibly hot flames. Its strong will allows it to spew flames from its beak and to kick continuously until an opponent either faints or gives up. It also has three large claws on each of its wings/arms. Combusken boosts its concentration by emitting harsh cries, distracting opponents by doing so with the loud screech. Owned By: No one yet

#257 Blaziken Interesting Fact: The name Blaziken is a portmanteau of the words blaze and chicken. Its Japanese name is Bursyamo. Pokedex Entry: It has flames burning on its wrists that will blaze intensely during its battles. Its legs also allow it to leap over skyscrapers many stories high. After years of using martial arts, its feathers may burn off from the intense heat in its body. Newer, healthier feathers will grow in their place. Owned By: No one yet

#258 Mudkip Interesting Fact: Mudkip's name is a portmanteau of "mud," being a surrounding of its natural habitat, and Kip, which refers to "skip," relating to the Mudskipper, the fish it resembles. Its Japanese name is Mizugorou. Pokedex Entry: The fin on Mudkip's head acts as highly sensitive radar. Using this fin to sense movements of water and air, Mudkip can determine what is taking place around it without using its eyes. When in water, Mudkip breathes using the gills on its cheeks. On land, it can powerfully lift large boulders by planting its four feet and heaving. It sleeps by burying itself in soil at the water's edge. Its large tail fin propels it through water with powerful acceleration. If it is faced with a tight situation in battle, Mudkip will become strong enough to crush rocks bigger than itself. #259 Marshtomp Interesting Fact: The drawing and sprite design of Marshtomp was created by Ken Sugimori's team for its 2003 release on the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. Many gamers have criticized the Advanced Generation artwork as a whole, since Ken Sugimori, the designer of all of the first and second generation Pokémon, led the design team, resulting in the Pokémon appearing in a more naturalistic style, compared to the anthropormorphistic style of the Pokémon Red & Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver games. Pokedex Entry: The surface of Marshtomp's body is enveloped by a thin, sticky film that enables it to live on land. Because it weakens if its skin dries out, it replenishes fluids by playing in mud. So, Marshtomp like to play in mud on beaches when the tide is low. Though it is a Water Pokémon, Marshtomp is much faster at traveling through mud than it is at swimming. Its hindquarters exhibit obvious development, giving it the ability to walk on just its hind legs. Also, like its preceder, Mudkip, it can use the fin on its head to navigate. Owned By: No one yet

#260 Swampert Interesting Fact: Swampert's appearance is inspired from the real world mudskipper. It has a long blue body with a lighter blue underbelly. It has four appendages that are a cross between legs and fins. With these, it sometimes stands upright on its hind legs, and at other times is on all fours like a quadrupedal animal. Each has an orange oval on it. Swampert has large, fan-shaped fins above its eyes and a huge axe-like fin growing out of its behind as a prosaic tail would. It also has a pair of orange gills on either side of its face. This Pokémon's name comes from "swamp," a place where many Water and Ground-type Pokémon would likely be found, and "rampart," meaning "a fortification," which probably refers to its habit of piling up boulders to protect itself. It could also come from the word "expert," as it is very capable in a swamplike area. Pokedex Entry: Swampert is a diurnal Pokémon with an affinity to water. Thus it lives and makes its nest offshore on various beaches. It has various abilities that allow it to live without fear of being targeted as prey. Its three fins sense subtle changes in the sounds and patterns of ocean waves and tidal winds to predict the oncoming of storms and tidal waves, respectively. Its great strength, allowing it to procure and drag boulders that can weigh a ton, lets it pile up boulders around its beach nest in order to weather the storms that it may predict. Of course, with its strength and its rock-hard arms, it can easily batter down a foe with a single swing. Other talents include its powerful vision, able to see through even the depths of murky water, allowing Swampert to live in a swamp or marshland environment, and its amazing swimming ability, making it faster in water than a jet ski. Its speed is comparable to Poliwrath Owned By: No one yet

#261 Poochyena Interesting Fact: Since Poochyena resembles a small dog, the first part comes from "pooch(ie)". It is quite hyena-like, so the name combines to "hyena". There is also a possibility of some form of a Native American "yena" that can refer to a wolf. Its Japanese name, Pochiena, is a reference to "Pochi," a generic name for a dog, similar to the English Spot or Fido. Pokedex Entry: At first sight, Poochyena takes a bite at anything that moves. This Pokémon chases after prey until the victim becomes exhausted. However, it may turn tail if the prey strikes back. Poochyena is an omnivore; it will eat anything. A distinguishing feature is how large its fangs are compared to its body. This Pokémon tries to intimidate its foes by making the hair on its tail bristle out. #262 Mightyena Interesting Fact: The name, Mightyena, is a conjunction of "mighty" and "hyena" (because it is based on a brown hyena, despite its wolf-like nature. Yena is also another name for the crocotta, a mythical creature thought to be based on an exaggerated description of a hyena. Its Japanese name is Guraena. Pokedex Entry: Mightyena is a moderately large, carnivorous Pokémon, like the real-life hyena alluded to by its name, though it also has characteristics of wolves and other canines such as the Shiloh Shepherd and the German Shepherd. It has an almost Gothic appearance, thanks to black lips, black markings alongside its eyes, and its role as a creature of the night. It has large, powerful claws, red eyes and sharply pointed fangs. #263 Zigzagoon Interesting Fact: The name Zigzagoon originates from the words zigzag and raccoon, which makes a double-layered sense because, in addition to its behavioral habit of running in a zigzag motion, its fur is jagged to depict a zigzag pattern. Its Japanese name, Ziguzaguma, is likely a portmanteau of "jiguzagu" "zigzag," and "araiguma", the Eurasian badger. Pokedex Entry: Zigzagoon restlessly wanders everywhere at all times. This Pokémon does so because it is very curious, it also becomes very interested in anything that it happens to see (hence its Pickup ability). The hair on its back is bristly, it rubs the hard back hair against trees to leave its territorial markings. This Pokémon may play dead to fool foes in battle. Rubbing its nose against the ground, it always wanders about back and forth in search of something. It is distinguished by the zigzag footprints it leaves. #264 Linoone Interesting Fact: Linoone's name originates from the words "line" and "raccoon." Its Japanese name, Massuguma, is a portmanteau of the words "massugu", meaning "straight" (as in direction), and "araiguma", the Eurasian badger. Pokedex Entry: Linoone is one of the fastest Pokémon, but only under specific conditions. It can run up to 60 miles per hour (almost 100 kilometres per hour), provided it is moving in a perfectly straight line. If it is required to change direction, Linoone must first stop completely before taking off in a different direction ( compare with Tauros). This means that it is exceedingly difficult for Linoone to negotiate something as simple as a gently curving path. It seems that upon evolving from Zigzagoon, its ability to wander freely in any direction vanishes. Linoone preys on both land-dwelling and pond-dwelling wildlife. When hunting on land, it will charge toward its prey at top speed. When it spots potential prey underneath the surface of a pond, it quickly leaps in and catches it with its sharp claws. #265 Wurmple Interesting Fact: Wurmple is a combination of the words worm, and rumple, referring to the wrinkled texture of its skin. Its Japanese name, Kemusso, is a reference to "kemushi" ("caterpillar"). Pokedex Entry: Much like Caterpie and Weedle, which can be counted as its counterparts in Pokémon Red and Blue, Wurmple is a relatively weak worm Pokémon, constantly threatened by larger bird Pokémon such as Swellow or Pidgeotto. The spikes on its back are similar to those of silkworms, but with an important difference: Wurmple's can sting its predators with poison. Many people may be startled by its "scary" buggish-look, but they may change their minds knowing that it can evolve into an elegant Beautifly. Owned By: No one yet
