a sociology question... why is it socially acceptable to give a smoker a hard time about smoking and it's okay to tell them off and s**t about smoking, but when it comes to telling an fat person to stop getting fat it's cruel and mean? i mean, both are extremely bad for you, but only one of them is okay to do.... i know you can't tell a fat person to stop being fat, but you can tell them to stop eating so much and to exercise a little. just wondering what you guys think.
i got this from a documentary i saw and am wondering what you guys think about it....

It's their body and their choice, and other people need to stay the ******** out of it regardless of what that choice is. Get it? A smoker knows the risks. He or she has them thrown at him constantly. He or she is stigmatized in many places. He or she is restricted from smoking indoors entirely in public. He or she has a warning on the label of every package of cigarettes bought. The smoker is well aware of what's happening within his or her body, and either doesn't care, can't break the addiction, or has benefits that outweigh the risks. For whatever reason, it's none of your business. An overweight person knows the risks. He or she is stigmatized by society and the media. He or she is insulted, and often has a hard time buying clothes. He or she may or may not have health problems, and likely has tried and failed to lose weight. Either he or she doesn't care about health risks, or is healthy despite his or her weight and sees no reason to change it. For whatever reason, it is not your body and not your choice. Worry about yourself and leave other people the ******** alone. And in case you didn't get it: Other peoples' habits, healthy or not, are none of your goddamned business. What they do with their bodies is not your business. Stay out of it.In other words, grow the ******** up and get out of your little "Let's help them kick the habit/get in shape!" Disney mindset.

Fat is PART of you. It's not something you put on in the morning and take off at night. It's not even classifiable as a behavior, because "getting fat" and "being fat" are two different things. Smoking on the other hand, is something you do that's not attached to you. If you were to pull the cigarette out of a smoker's hand, you'd be pulling away an object, not a PART OF THEM. Additionally, many smokers don't get badmouthed or treated poorly because they smoke. So, don't simply say "omg fat people are horrible and should know about it" simply because fat people KNOW that they're fat, and they have to live with that for their whole lifetime of fatness. People who smoke? When they're not smoking, no one knows that they're smoking unless they reek of tobacco, and during the cold season, even that can be hidden because of stuffy noses. A smoker will always be accepted if he or she is not smoking. A fat person will still be stigmatized and treated badly.

It's really just the way the human mind works. We all know smoking is bad for you. And honestly, stupid people make those choices to smoke,a nd continue smoking. But on the other hand, portly people, don't really have a choice in the matter. Some do, but most don't. Some people are born that way. And it is indeed rude to call people fat, obese, etc.
