Archie, stalwart for over 60 years as THE typical American Teenager (are you american teenagers' lives like Archie Comics? Do tell this European thanks) goes for... a whole new style of artwork?

I can only imagine that some midwest small towns contained people like that back in the 1950's. The Archie mythos of American small town teen life was a cruel joke on the rest of the country and world, promoting a sociatial view that never really existed. The same can be said of other comics like Luann ( http://www.comics.com/comics/luann/ ).

Now, as far as the new pencil art shown in that forum post goes, that's so manga influenced as to make me want to puke. There is a similar comic featuring Sabrina the Teenaged (anime) Witch that I looked at a couple of times. Both are sorry statements of American comic book production and a solid reason I prefer reading projects like Girly and Chugworth Acadamy. dramallama

Wait, what? Manga influenced? What are you smoking? I can tell you that the art in that Archie page has more to do with X-Men than Japaneses artists (And even that is quite a stretch). The artistic conventions found in Japaneses comics are nowhere to be seen on that page. If anything, the dynamics in that page are as stale as ANY ARCHIE PAGE. It may look slightly different (Updated, if you will), but everything besides how the characters look will undoubtedly be the same: ARCHIE BAD.

The Sabrina mangafied comic is indeed Mangafied. The stuff is there... Not as good as other would, true, but it is there. Its main problem is certain artistic inconsistencies that don't seem well-thought or planned. Oh, that, and the fact that it is Sabrina, and it sucks.

Fair enough. What I was seeing were the character designs for the two female characters (Betty and Veronica?) in the pencil sketch. The poses and designs were sugestive of something other than what a standard American teen might be drawn as. The faces are clearly free of manga influances.

And what was the cover artist high on when he or she thought that was a good idea? U-G-L-Y!

Riverdale was originally based on my hometown, in which I still live. You wouldn't know it now, but it wasn't it the midwest or west-coast, but rather in New England.

Quite frankly, I'd RATHER it be in a manga influenced style than whatever that style would be called.

What is most ironic is that the new style looks far more dated than the classic style. The cover is straight out of 80's Marvel!

I have decided that this is the best marketing strategy ever.

Because I have never heard anyone talk about Archie comics online this much since I've been born.

Somebody there deserves a raise.

Only if people actually BUY the issues.

Talk does not translate into sales when the product is a**.

I never bought any of the Archie titles to begin with. After watching the few attempts to animate the various characters (Filmation's Archie and DIC's Sabrina), I had my dose of the comic. Didn't care much for the characters or designs then or now.

You're right that the subject has brought attention, but I don't think it will translate into new readers.
