Your preferences...?
  Canon is definitely better.
I usually prefer canon pairings, but I like "almost" pairings.
  Both are quite nice.
I like "almost" pairings a bit more, but canon is good too.
The hinted pairings are the best.
It really depends on the pairing or it doesn't really matter.

Just a question I thought I'd put out there...

A lot of the major pairings that people 'ship are in fact "almost love" or only hinted pairings. The characters are never actually involved in canon pairings with each other. A good example of this would be the pairings Shizuru and Natsuki from Mai-HiME or Haruka and Yukino of the same series. In both couples, it's heavily suggested that the girls have feelings for each other (Shizuru is actually in love with Natsuki in the anime canon, but Natsuki doesn't really return her feelings).

And then, on the other hand, you have series like Kannazuki no Miko and Sailor Moon with actual same-sex girl couples (Chikane and Himeko and Haruka and Michiru, respectively). These couples are quite sweet as well and both have fairly heavy fanbases.

A lot of guild members express a preference toward canon pairings, but when it comes down to it, are "almost" pairings less sweet or interesting than canon love? Is it because you prefer to see the romance yourself? Do you sometimes prefer almost-love pairings? Does it depend on the pairing?

I'm not sure I was really clear about what I was thinking (I'm afraid I tend to be like this when I'm being overly contemplative), so.

A lot of my favorite pairings are actually better examples of "almost love." Yorusoi (Yoruichi x Soi Fong) of Bleach and Shizuru x Natsuki of Mai-HiME are both pairings that are basically heavy subtext, but that seems to make me see a lot more to their relationship than what's shown on the surface.

On the other hand, I am a huge pairing of the Haruka x Michiru pairing from Sailor Moon, and that's canon all the way. There's also a lot of love in that pairing and the story and struggles that they go through are really beautiful and heart-pulling to me.

So for me, I think it really depends on the pairing and how it's pulled off. Sometimes I'm in the mood for some canon girl-love, but when it comes down to it, my favorite pairings in fanwork form are plenty to keep me satisfied. ^__^

I'VE ACTUALLY WONDERED THIS BEFORE! I think it really depends, cuz haruka x michiru is sweet, but my favorite sailor moon "pair" is ami x makoto. why? CUZ IT'S JUST MORE FUN! If it isn't official, you can make up wutever twisted little scenarios you want in your fantasies cool lol . hehheh <-- fangirl mentality
But even tho it's just hinted, it's nice if it's strongly hinted. Otherwise it just seems like you're really living in your own dream world talk2hand . *sigh*

In my personal opinion, I think "almost" pairings are quite entertaining because it leaves more up to the imagination of the fan. But preferably seeing the romance through your own eyes instead of imagining it can be a bit more adorable, in a sense. But as an overall both types of pairing are equally liked by myself. But at the same time it does depend upon the pairing.

I like canon parings like Haruka/Michiru, because it's just so sweet and beautiful to see them out on the screen, and being completely in love.

But heavily hinted at pairings can be fun- but that definitely depends on the pairing, for me.

I love canon pairings because you get to feel good about the fact that they are actually together. It is kinda fulfilling. The problem I have with a lot of "almost love" is that I never feel fulfilled because I'm constantly waiting for something to happen. But I guess that's why I love Fanfics because it allows for the fulfillment of that tension.

I agree on all levels. =3 While I love lsitening to Haruka and Michiru's "adult rated" conversations, I can't help but be all fangirlish over a rei x minako pairing either. ^^ Especially in the manga when they're together and say "Actually.. we don't need men. Do you have a problem with that?" -giggles- [even though it's somewhat taken out of context] It's fun to pair up characters for your own amusment, but you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when you see a couple together too. ^_~

I have to go with Kage. It really depends on the pairing, how well they pull it off or hint at it, and whether my brain sees the connection or not. 3nodding heart

Any pairing would suffice for my taste but it depends how well they look together. razz Or I'm force to make a yuri pairing.

Sometimes I would want to see some romance between the two characters. On the other hand, I like both Canon and Almost love pairings. Sometimes I even come up with some cross-over pairings just for the fun of it.

Canon pairing is better in my opinion. I get frustrated when it's an almost-love scenario, unless its absolutly adorable. It might be good for writing fanfics, where you can have more imagination, or maybe both are good for different reasons. I guess thats why both exist xd

I'd have to say that it depends on the pairing as well. I love canon pairings but if I don't like how it's matched up I lose interest. That's probably why I like the 'almost love' pairings better because if a character has a strong connection with several other characters then yoiu can pic and chose who you want with who sweatdrop I think my favorite almost love pairing is either Yoruichi/Soi Fong, Tatsuki/Orihime (both from bleach) or Minako/Rei (sailor moon obviously)

I prefer canon, but I do enjoy the "almost" pairings, depending on the pairing.

I'd have to go with the 'almost' pairings myself. Or perhaps even pairings with very little subtext. It lets me use my imagination a lot more. The little subtext that they have makes me squeal a lot more, too. 3nodding
