THE LAMPTOWN LIBRARY

Welcome to the Lamptown Library! Here you'll find all the reading material you ever could have wanted and then some. Please don't bring any food or drinks into the area.
Feel free to talk, but remember--this is a library. Talk quietly or not at all.

THE BOOK ROOM

The main room of the library. All the bookshelves are bolted to the floor, so there's not much risk of accidental damage. Lamps are here and there to provide light, and the two blue footstools have extendable legs for when you want to get a book out of your reach.
There is a small reading area and table for those who might want to spread out their books a little, but if you want to make sure you aren't bothered, then you might want to go to the Reading or Research Rooms.

Nothing much to say about this area. It's comfortably furnished in the modest style of the library, with chairs and tables and whatnot. If you want to read without being disturbed, this is the place for you. Talking is allowed, but not as much as in the Book room. This is also where the book checkout counter is.

THE RESEARCH ROOM

The ultimate room of silence in the library. There are a few computers for online research, but mainly tables and shelves of reference books. The furnishings are a bit more modern than in the other two rooms, but just as demure.
If you don't want to be bothered, this is the place to hide. Not many people come in here, probably because the other rooms are more comfortable.

All Jasper had seen of the sign was 'Library' before she opened the door and stepped inside. She liked libraries.
Two majestic (if nonsentient) lamps guarded the door, and Jasper carefully read the sign that said "No food or drink."
"Good thing we took all the groceries home before wandering about, huh?" she whispered to Kiran. He fluttered his wings in agreement.
She walked down the steps and looked at the bookshelves with joy. "Ah, one could just get lost in time here," she whispered to her bulb, holding him up to one of the shelves stacked with books.

And lose time they did. She was jolted from reading her mythology text by the chiming of the clock on the wall. Kiran flapped his wings, obviously irritated by her stopping in midsentence.
"Sorry baby," she whispered, pulling out a bookmark and sticking it in the place before shutting the book gently. "We gotta stop for now. I need something to eat."
This made her wonder if lamps needed something to eat. Or absorb. Or something. She thought she'd seen a place like that or something. But he seemed to be fine at the moment.
So it seemed like a good time to get something to eat.

"A library! This is perfect!" A library, by definition, was full of books, and therefore full of entertainment. And libraries didn't usually seem to be popular hangout places, so she probably wouldn't have to worry about dealing with people, either.

"Let's go see if they have any good books," she said to Az, as she carried him inside, and started toward the back of the library, to further reduce the risk of human contact.

Az...She couldn't tell what he thought of the library. She had put him on a table so he could move around, but he was being unusually still. She didn't think that meant he disliked the library, but she couldn't tell.

"Life would be easier if you could talk, you know that?"

The problem with libraries was that they closed, and so, a few hours later, Anrea found herself and Azhar back outside again.

"So, what now?" she asked the bulb. But he didn't do anything. He sort of looked like he was asleep, maybe? She hoped so. He had been unusually still the whole time at the library...Probably just sleeping. She should have read to him, or something. But that just felt weird, reading to a bulb.

"Let's go get something to eat, okay?"

Somehow, having a one sided conversation with him was a bit less weird.

Jasper returned to the Library as often as she could and rarely saw another soul. It was kind of strange, but she didn't particularly mind.

Conrad, contrary to what she had believed, loved books. So while Jasper and Kiran read, sitting on the floor, Conrad hopped back and forth until he realized he could really get some speed by rolling. Every time he raced past, the pages of the book--and Kiran's wings--lit up with an unearthly glow.

Finally, annoyed with Conrad's antics, Kiran flapped his wings authoritatively. The blacklight bulb slowed to a halt, righted itself, and bounced excitedly once or twice. Jasper grinned at the sight; in his new lamp state Kiran was only a little bigger than Conrad and was made intimidating only by his impressive wingspan.

Conrad glowed purple, making Kiran glow stronger, then hopped away, figuring the older lamp to not be worth the trouble.

Adam O'Reely, the cocktailcrafter of the ages, had sauntered into the library.

Ava beamed her flashing flashlight bulb everywhere at once, seeing, at long last, Kiran. A little flutter over there, and the adorable lamp would be hers.

Adam, busy buried into the Tome of Cocktailcrafting, didn't notice this. All he noticed was a simple, easy formula for frozen Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Conrad spotted Ava around the same instant she noticed Kiran. Not being the shy-yet-worldly lamp that his companion was, Conrad had had no idea that there other lamps, and now that there was one he roll-hopped over to investigate.

Flashing a bright purple greeting, he righted himself and hopped once inquisitively.

Anrea stopped in the doorway of the library, noticing, for the first time, people inside of it. Both of them looked engrossed in reading, but maybe they weren't really.

Did she really need a book that badly that she had to put up with social contact? If she just walked out now, would anyone notice?

Probably. And she was being stupid. Who talked to random strangers in the library?

Against her instincts that were telling her to leave now, before the people notice, Anrea sneaked into the library, holding Azhar tightly, as if he were some child's teddy bear she was seeking comfort from.

Azahr, though, was doing his best to lean forward in Anrea's tight grip. It looked very much like he was looking at all of the other lamps in the library. And as far as Anrea could tell, that was exactly what he was doing.

She stopped moving as he started blinking on and off, freezing like a criminal in a police searchlight. Maybe she would be lucky, and no one would notice the flashing lamp bulb.

Conrad did notice the flashing bulb, and decided it was infinitely more interesting than an uninterested lamp. Rolling over, he bumped against the owners' foot repeatedly, then hopped upright and blinked purple back, illuminating all the owner's light clothing.

Anrea stared at the bulb bumping against her feet. She decided that a light was infinitely better than people, though. People were weird. She didn't get them. Lights were much easier, though.

She placed Azhar on the ground next to Conrad, and sat down, to watch them.

Azhar, standing on his 'head', hopped over to Conrad, fascinated by the other bulb. The ceiling lamp then just stood there, staring at the blacklight.

Conrad flashed brilliantly, obviously curious as to why the other lamp was upside down. Then, deciding on a second, he rolled away, righted himself, and hopped a few times to indicate he wanted to be followed. Then he rolled back, bumped against Anrea, and rolled away towards a bookshelf.

It was a nuisance, he realized, not being able to speak like the humans.

Azhar seemed perfectly content hopping around on his 'head'. Actually, he was wondering why the other lamp was the one going around upside down.

Seeing the other bulb rolling around, Azhar decided to try that, instead of hopping everywhere. So Azhar flopped onto his side, and rolled after the black light bulb.

Anrea, amused by the antics of the lights (and feeling a need to keep an eye on them) followed them, wherever they were going. She wondered if Azhar could understand the blacklight bulb any better than she could.
