A group of people are seen entering the mountain, seeming searching for something. They vanish into the mountain.

Malys crept along the rock facing, thankfully not loosing his footing on the uneven surface of the side of the Mountain. A grimacing look upward every now and again was his only movement other than the steady steps as he gradually made his way upward.

"Why do I get all the crazy places?" he complained to himself, albeit quietly, as to not disturb the two Magma sentries that guarded the now inaccessible entrance to Mt. Pyre. The Team had made short work of closing off the area to the general public, and Malys had to salute their efficiency, if nothing else. He just didn't have a free hand at the moment, so he would have to give them a rain check on the salute.

"Now if only they'd install an escalator here..."

Making his way upward proved to be long work, however once he had scanned the top of the mountain, thankfully again without being noticed, he was happy to learn that going down was much easier and quicker. It was especially a good thing after the Magma sentries changed guard to another pair of grunts, these more vigilant than their predecessors because they hadn't been standing in one place for the better portion of the afternoon. Give them a couple of hours, and they'd be dozing too, Malys assumed, as he slunk down the shoreline until he was out of sight of his current neighbors on the island.

Making his way silently back to the small alcove he had found earlier (camping is never as much fun unless you're really roughing it, huh?), Malys pulled a pad of paper from the single bag he had brought along, silently thanking his brother for his insistence that he brought such an item along (Malys would have been quiet content with a stock of ramen and a couple of sodas), Malys made a quick sketch of the layout of the place, marking where the leaders seemed to be focusing their search. They hadn't found what they were looking for yet, apparently, otherwise the Magmas would have been long gone. So that still gave him some time to plan it seemed.

And some time to sleep, he added the mental note, biting back a yawn as he turned one last gaze out of the small cave, before returning into it, slipping through the crack between the two boulders that concealed the entrance. His Houndoom, Helion, was there waiting for him, keeping a small fire going to light the pitch black cave, and standing guard.

With his eyes closed and snoring...

Malys rolled his eyes at the lazy canine, before stretching, wincing as his shoulders protested to the long climb. He had been keeping up the same routine nearly every day now, checking to make sure the Magmas didn't get too close to what they were looking for.

"Heaven knows what they'd do if they found the half..." he muttered, biting back another yawn. He was just starting to doze off as he let his mind wander, when a deafening explosion shook his little alcove, sending loose rocks falling along with a helping of sand.

"Cripes, what the heck?!" Malys yelped, Helion leaping to his feet as the Houndoom cast a wary glance to the ceiling.

"What are they up to now?" Malys complained, exiting the cave as he grabbed his bag, Helion following behind his trainer as the two gazed up the beach to the base of the mountain.

The two sentries were still at their post, but had turned to look upwards. Malys followed their gaze to the top of the mountain, grimacing as he spotted the plume of black smoke that now wafted from the peak.

"...Crap..."

{{Erm... roar? ._.}}

A great explosion shook the mountain, as a mighty roar broke loose from the cavern along the sandy beaches of Mt. Pyre. Malys only had enough time to gape for a couple of seconds, before he broke out into a run, cursing to himself all the while, with Helion trotting alongside his trainer, equally worried.

What came out of the side of the cavern had Malys skidding to a halt, as Groudon, roared again, hurling a boulder at the Team Magma members who were pursuing it.

"I take it they found it..." Malys muttered darkly, shaking his head sadly. He had hoped that help would have made it in time, but it looks like that wasn't the case...

"Come on, Helion, looks like its up to us..." Malys looked to the Houndoom, who gulped.

"Oh come on! You can't be getting scared on me now!" Malys shouted, as the Houndoom sat for a moment, considering the giant Groudon who was tearing up the beach.

"...Doom," he stated simply, although Malys wasn't sure if it was a statement, or a premonition as to what was to be their fate.

"Well, we can't give up, for one, Sy would never let me hear the end of it," Malys lectured, "But if you're not with me, I'm going in alone, I CAN'T let them get that half of the section hidden in this region!"

"Houuuuuu," Helion shuddered for a moment, considering the teeth and claws that the Groudon had, before standing alongside Malys resolutely.

The two charged down the beach, each second-guessing their methods, but not having any time to reconsider.

"Here goes nothing..." Malys muttered, closing his eyes for a brief moment. There wasn't any turning back now.

One trainer and his Pokemon against the entirety of Team Magma.

Not to mention an enraged Groudon. Mustn't forget that.

"Alright, Helion! Use Flamethrower!" Malys called, wincing as his voice rang out clear down the coastline, not only gathering the attention of the Team Magma members in pursuit of the legendary, but making the Groudon itself turn its attention to the trainer and the Houndoom that stood a short distance away.

Helion nodded solemnly, seemingly having gathered his courage again, although he was still shaking a bit from the fear of the giant Pokemon.

"Cut the Magma's path off," Malys instructed, as the Houndoom inhaled deeply, flame licking around his jaws as he released the fiery blast of flame that scorched the sand, melting it into glass in several places, creating a searing arc that ran down the beachline, successfully cutting the pursuing Magmas from the Groudon, halting them as they fumbled for their own Pokemon.

Helion soon found himself faced up alone against a horde of Vulpix, Numel, and Ponyta.

"Well, you certainly don't play fair," Malys complained bitterly, reaching for his remaining Pokeballs. The Drapion and Grovyle soon joined alongside Helion, as Malys himself joined the fray, stepping beside his Pokemon as they faced off against the grunts and assorted admins that were pretty miffed at being interrupted in their chase.

The beachline virtually erupted as scores of fiery attacks were let loose. Malys' Grovyle was the first to fall, letting out a cry of defeat as she slumped to the sands, struggling to rise as Malys looked back in horror, seeing the scorched form of his partner still trying to defend herself against the Magmas.

"No! Aida!" he called, returning the Grovyle to her Pokeball as he barely managed to dodge a pair of Growlithe fangs aimed for his throat. Malys shifted his weight, turning deftly as he slammed in a tackle against a Numel who was about to release another burst of flame at Helion.

It didn't take a scientist to figure out that he was sorely outnumbered, not to mention outmatched, as Malys eventually ended up having to recall Andes, his Drapion, soon after. The scorpion had fared a bit better against the fire types than Aida had, but eventually had to admit defeat.

Malys suddenly froze, earning himself a scorching blow from a Vulpix, crying out as the flames licked at his clothes as he wildly bat at his torn sleeves to put out the flames. The Magmas laughed, closing in around Malys and Helion, who sported several burns and scrapes as well, panting softly, but releasing the rest of his breath in a blood-curdling growl, taking up position guarding Malys' back.

Malys would have turned himself back to the fight at hand within seconds, however what had caught his eye held it fast, as he continued to gape behind the Magmas, who eventually caught on, glancing behind them as well, blanching at what they saw.

Groudon stood, towering over the group as he roared, releasing an Eruption.

The beach nearly split in two, as magma suddenly seeped through the broken crust, flaring brightly to life as Groudon manipulated it, sending it hurling towards the entire group.

Malys had enough time to draw half a breath before he was snagged Helion by the collar, the two dashing towards the ocean. Malys fumbled for a moment, before recalling the Houndoom, not giving himself enough time to think, simply letting his reflexes take control.

He could hear the surprised shouts and screams of the Magmas, many of whom followed a similar path to Malys, towards the water.

The lava flowed freely behind him, the heat of which was enough to melt the soles of his boots, the rubber growing sticky and soft just from being within 10ft of the molten substance. Malys didn't give time to examine his predicament at the moment, only let his feet continue to fly down the soft sands of the beach that were quickly melting away.

Groudon roared once more behind him, shaking the very mountain.

Malys dove off the rocky shore, hitting the water with a gasp, and later a cry of pain. The ocean itself was near boiling temperature, as Groudon let an Earthquake follow his molten onslaught, further upsetting the landscape, and sending more Magmas scurrying. Malys climbed onto one of the rocks lining the water, unable to bear the heat of the ocean, panting, beaten, shaken, and very much about to pass out from sheer exhaustion.

"Me and my big mouth," he winced, coughing up a mouthful of water, wiping his mouth as he squinted at the happenings on the beach.

A figure sat from the safety of the mountaintop, although the tremors from the Groudon shook the rocky landscape just the same, Maxie wasn't the least bit worried.

After all, everything was going according to plan. Even if it meant sacrificing a few worthless underlings, Groudon had finally come out into the open.

"At long last," he sneered, motioning his squad of admins forward with their orders.

"Get moving, before I dock your pay 90%, this is our only chance!" he shouted.

With the mention of the paycheck cuts, all the admins burst into motion, eager to be the one to actually boast the capture of Groudon.

Pulling a series of levers, buttons, and beams, the trap was set into motion, a long arm with a series of steel nets let loose, ensnaring Groudon, who let out a furious cry, whipping about trying to free itself.

Knowing that alone would do little but delay Groudon, Maxie waved his hand, motioning the second portion into play. A group of beams of red light shot from a series of detectors placed inside the face of the mountain, circling about maliciously, before going to work, weaving a net that cut through the beach, circling about Groudon in an ever-tightening sphere.

Groudon fought back viciously, flailing with enough force to shake the mountain, but soon enough the struggles proved too much for it, as it was captured, ensnared in the vicious net.

"Good work," Maxie nodded with a smirk. Everything had come together so nicely!

Within an hour, the remaining Magma forces were packed up, chartering a huge ocean liner that carried the captured Groudon back to their base.

They had done their part. It was up to the other teams now.

"No..." Malys whispered weakly from his tenuous hold on the rock off the coast. He could see everything, unfortunately, as the realization that he had failed had plenty of time to sink in.

"Dammit!" He cried, punching the rock in frustration, which only added bloody knuckles to his growing list of injuries.

There was nothing he could do.

He watched pleadingly as the liner floated from view, as if staring at it long enough would cause it to sink. However he didn't hold that power, as the Magmas retreated, victorious.

They had won.

Malys knew he didn't have to look at the top of the mountain to figure out that the half of the artifact in this region had been stolen. That was how they managed to get Groudon to emerge.

"The blade," he muttered darkly, closing his eyes in defeat, "they managed to get the half of the blade..."

Weariness washing over him suddenly, Malys slipped back into the water almost without realizing it, somehow, by some miracle, managing to fight his way back to shore, crawling to the beach, scraping his hands further on the glass chunks that now litered the sands from Groudon's fiery attack. In some dark way, he wished the warm beach were molten once more, then maybe then he would be able to slip from the world.

"I can't... think like that," he muttered, "I'm starting to sound all depressed like Sy on a bad day." He laughed, quietly, laying back on the sands to rest a bit, "There's still so much to do, and yet somehow, I managed to screw up this bad. Heh, imagine that, like always..."

He had to figure out a way to return to mainland, had to figure out how to get the message to Sylam and Valsin, had to find help to try to stop their plans.

Malys' mind raced, but his body was in no state to cooperate, as he finally lost the fight against consciousness, and his vision blurred, before he collapsed on the beach.

A stray Chatot was flying over the island, whistling to himself as he paused, lowering himself onto the scorched remains of a tree, catching a phrase that stuck with it. Committing it to memory, as it did anything else that struck its fancy, the Chatot flew off a moment later, repeating a strange verse it had heard from a figure fallen on the beach.

"A young man, callow and foolish in
innocence, came to own a sword.
With it, he smote Pokemon, which gave
sustenance, with carefree abandon.
Those not taken as food, he
discarded, with no afterthought.

The following year, no Pokemon
appeared. Larders grew bare.
The young man, seeking the missing
Pokemon, journeyed afar.
Long did he search. And far and wide,
too, until one he did find.

...Mt. Pyre, has fallen..."
