Simple, really. Did you like Buffy better before or after Dawn came in? Buffy alone or protecting younger sister? Did it make it possible/easier for Joyce to...well, I won't spoil it.

Discuss.

I personally liked it before Dawn. Dawn's too whiny and Buffy shouldn't be all motherly. But that's me.

Forgive me if this thread has been made already.

I like the show. All seasons. All the time.

Dawn was a great addition, and people make her out to be way whinier than she really is. Yes at the beginning she was annoying, but they did that for a reason. They did that to make you go "WTF". But I think she was good for the show. She kept things interesting. And because Buffy had to assume a caring big sister role, she became a much more caring character. Not that she wasn't before hand, but before Dawn it was really a Buffy's needs come first kind of deal. It really added to the season 5 everyone needs to grow up because they are adults now.

My girlfriend commented once on why she thinks it's S5 when Spike actually falls in love with Buffy. Because Buffy had Dawn, she had another figure to care about, so she had to be a more loving person. Because she was a more loving person, she was more easy to be loved, thus why Spike fell in love.

Anyways, Dawn really is more or less your average teenage hormone bomb, and the reason most teenage Buffy fans dislike her is because they see their teenage hormone bomb in her and don't want to admit that they are like that themselves.

I liked them both, but I think I preffered it with just Buffy. It seemed sortof simpler and more fun. With Dawn it just didn't seem real, and Buffy was, as mentioned before all uptight and motherly.

See... I kinda get where you are coming from with it being a little lighter and more fun predawn but I think that doesn't actually have to do with Dawn. It has to do with the fact that the characters were less mature. They were kids. The fifth season was about being forced to grow up and that just happened to coincide with Dawn's appearance into the show.

Ya, you're right on the bullet. Dawn was only a tool used to make Buffy more mature and to grow up. She can't stay a kid forever.

I don't think I'd respect the show as much if she didn't grow up since I'm at a point in my life where I'm growing up and it helps seeing the Buffy cast growing up as I'm their age.

I've got to say without. I find Dawn the most annoying character in any TV show ever! 3nodding

The reason people are annoyed by Dawn is because they probably act or acted just like her and don't want to admit that they do or did. Sure she's whiny but so is every one at that age.

I lack respect for people who insult Dawn on the grounds that she is whiny. She's a teenage hormone bomb. Everyone is at her age. I know I threw fits in my mid teens. So did everyone. She's a normal person. If you can't deal with her, never have kids.

I don't dislike her, but I don't really like her either. So I don't really care for her all the much. That's in general. But in some episodes I like her and in other episodes I don't.

And you're no better than Dawn for being all whiny about her. She was supposed to be annoying at first, but she got better as time went on. Which is more than I can say for you.

Ok, I guess I need to elaborate on why I don't like Dawn. 3nodding

I do agree that Buffy would have grown more mature without Dawn and so these are my reasons for not liking her all that much. smile

Yes, part of it is her whinyness and just sheer annoyance value. I know that that is a normal part of being a teenager, but she does seem to have more than her fair share. rolleyes And this is a major part of why I dislike the character.

Also she strikes me as an almost useless character who contributes very little to the show - just my opinion. sweatdrop twisted

My main problem with her is how she was introduced into the show. I kind of got the feeling when she was introduced that they were hoping to find a replacement for Buffy as the actress didn't want to carry on. (I could be wrong here - I'm a passive fan not a megafan)

And when the audiences didn't really take to her they left her in but didn't expand on her role like they had planned to.
Again this is just my little crackpot theory! xd
This really annoys me, it makes her a bit of a spare part with no real purpose!

Also, when she was introduced as the key (I could be getting some points wrong - its so long since I watched those eps) I thought that it would have made more sense plot wise for her to no longer have been there as Buffy's sister once the season ended. Buffy doesn't have a sister! I would have enjoyed the story arch more if they had realized that Dawn wasn't Buffy's sister, that she wasn't a real person who had been born in the normal way etc and then she would have gone back to not existing once they defeated the big bad. It just anoys me the way that the writers suddenly introduced a sister after so many seasons!!!

And . . . . . .

I just hate that Dawn! evil biggrin 3nodding
