Both these articles were from Whedon.info about Buffy and Spike's relationship.

Sarah Michelle Gellar
It became very S&M and I felt degraded as an actress

Quote:
At a convention last year in Detroit I got the chance to talk to James Marsters and asked him about his feelings during this time on Buffy. This was a candid conversation and not in front of a room full of fans, but a room with 7-8 people present. He said Season 6 Sex Scenes was not only a difficult time for him personally but as an actor. There were several things that he did not want to do (Seeing Red bathroom scene in particular) and he went to the higher ups about it. They said if he didn’t do it then he would be sued for breach of contract. Which told him that he had no say in the matter of Spike, he was just to get out there and do the scenes no matter his feelings.

Chances are even though Sarah was Buffy something like this happened. Yep she could have raised a huge stink about it and been fired or sued for breach of contract. Even big names have to play in the field with the Big Boys who are paying their checks.

If you ever watch the dailies from Wrecked and Dead Things you can see the friction working against James and Sarah. They honestly don’t want to be there. Yes they were professional and got the job done but at what expense to their minds and their feelings. No amount of money paid to you can take away the feeling of being used and abused.

So I feel that yes they were professionally and personally degraded. Their feelings (James and Sarah) about the scenes in Season 6 were completely justified. I would have felt degraded also. They said no and still had to do it, that is a virtual rape of a person’s standards and self respect. I can see why none of the actors are really behind a huge push for the movies, who would want to work on a set like that.

I'm immensely anti-spuffy, their relationship was just pure sex and violence and very little good came out of it, except Buffy getting some feeling back, which even she despised. She did care about Spike, but in a brotherly way, not a soulmate way, and their sexual relationship was vile and sick and even the actors know it.

(For the rec- I support Buffy/Angel, Spike/Drusilla)

I hated their relationship in season six. It made Buffy look like such a tramp. But in season seven, I liked it am because Spike went to get a soul for Buffy, and they eventually learned to love each other without the lust. But hey, thats just my opinion.
&&Geez, I didn't know Buffy producers were that cruel.

Are you serious? xp Joss is that cruel. gonk . Btw, I also depise Spuffy and am annoyed by the fact that it's the most popular couple. stressed

I don't think it was Joss making them do it, I think at this point (2002) he was probably putting work into Firefly, I think Marti Noxon was primarily in charge of S6.

He still had some control over what the characters were supposed to do.

But he probably wasn't in the brunt of it.

If there is ANY way that we NOT blame Joss...I say we go for it! *Lights torch, grabs pitchfork* Down with Marti Noxon!

I was never much of a Spuffy fan & season 6 just killed it complete for me. A lot of people I know got into Spuffy after Spike went and got his soul back for Buffy but I felt that was too much Angel.

Hear, hear!

I can understand the actor's hesitation; but the fact is that, well. . .

How do I say this without sounding like a b***h?

And, like most of the rest of the people in this thread, I rather hate Spuffy. I've always been an Angel/Buffy fan. 3nodding

That does seem rather mean, though I guess they did sign some sort of contract...

I don't really like Spuffy (I'm a Bangel fan all the way) and what happened in season six really was very un-buffy-like in my oppinion.

Hey there are Bangel fans around! I thought they'd all disappeared.

I thought it was quite gross because the season revolved around them and there love making it was not what I watch Buffy for

Even though I've only seen bits and pieces of Season 6-7 I didn't really like the Spuffy relationship [cool name by the way] even when they were just finding a slight attraction [on Buffy's side] in seasn 5 it just didn't feel real to me. Bangel was a more true relationship and I can see perfectly the love they held for one another, but I still didn't have the total feeling for that couple either.

Spuffy was just wrong from the get-go and the fact that Spike got his soul back for Buffy [such an Angel move] kind of ruined Spike for me...even though I didn't even know about that little storyline until I read these post's. But now that I know Spike went and got his soul back I just have to shake my head...if you must change yourself so dramatically for the person you suposidly love then you're not meant to be together...love is blind you shouldnt' change for the one you love. They love you for the way you are.

But I'm not an expert on Spuffy as I've only seen them completely in season 5 and that was only when Spike was discovering his feelings for Buffy. But the fact that he got a Buffy-bot for sex kind of gave me a preview to the relationship that was coming in Season 6.
