I adore this pairing to no end. I think Neji and Hinata are totally compatible, because they have similarities and differences. This was like...My second pairing. My first pairing was NaruSaku.
I think NejiHina could become canon, because...
1.) Cousin to cousin incest is legal in Japan. It's been mentioned in both Maison Ikkoku and it's one of the main things (though no point about it being 'incest' is made) in Fruits Basket, whereas almost all of the main pairings are incest. HaruRin - Cousins. KyoKag - Cousins. HiroKisa - Cousins. Maybe more distant, but still cousins.
2.) I think if Hinata realized that Naruto doesn't love her, she'd either run to Kiba or Neji for comfort. Probably Neji, since she lives with him. I can totally see him comforting her.
3.) Neji does have care and respect for Hinata, even though he doesn't seem to show it. People say: He tried to kill her. It's called development. Later in the series, he realizes that it's not her fault, and that she's really important to him.
4.) Hinata's the heiress to a huge clan. It's very likely she'll marry into the family, and a prodigy like Neji is exactly what Hiashi would do. Not only would it keep the blood-line pure, but Hiashi would be more pleased, hoping that Neji, the prodigy, could make up for his 'failure daughter's' bad genes.
5.) For Neji, this experience would be great. His children would not be forced to be part of cadet branch, and be cursed like he was. For Neji and Hinata, this is the best choice.
