There's this group of girls with whom I'm...VERY good friends with! They are as obsessed with Jrock & Lolita as I am and I was wondering: if they were a group of American girls with only one Japanese member (a boy, mind you), would anyone be insulted or think them a disgrace if they performed MOSTLY in Japanese? Some parts/songs are in English, but the members doing vocals feel they sound better and get a nicer vocal range when they sing in Japanese. I'm all for it, but they don't want the public to portray them as "Japanese/Lolita-wanna-be's". *None of them except the male member,(who wants to remain unknown until the group's successful) are Japanese, but all VERY have mixed blood.* Any thoughts?

*Nods* We just fear a hoard of insulted Japanese people throwing paint on us @ Gigs *kinda like those fur protest people* or no one wanting to hear our music because they discover that we're American. But, I've noticed them responding warmly to Korean artists singing in Japanese, so our situation shouldn't be any different, right? I mean, Utada Hikaru's been on MTV in America, Miyavi's performed in Vegas, and Dir en Grey was in Georgia *awsome concert, btw. Seeing Kyo cry was beautiful!*. So we should be able to do whatever!

Blackrose Kaire I think its a good idea. But with every singer in any genra in any langauge walks hand in hand with crtisism.Hey if they ever got famous they could get lolita in a better like maybe. If you could, can you post their music somewhere in the guild so we could hear it? yes. but, right now, they're a little "under-cover". When they're all ready, I'll call in a few favors and post the music. Right now, they're having trauma over the group's name. So, right now, they're open to suggestions. They don't want to make their big debut and have regrets about their own name, so I'm helping them out a bit.

Okay. The way I've always seen it is like this --- have they been STUDYING the language? If they haven't been studying the language and their grammar is horrid or their pronunciation is off, no one's going to go for it. But if they HAVE been studying the language, it's not as much of a big deal. ie. Jovette of MARS
But then again, music is supposed to be about communication -- not acting cool and being like some other band -- your fav band from Japan. Unless these girls are bilingual, they should stick to the language they know best for means of communication.
You can't really compare this to Utada or Shakira, because both of them are fluent in both the languages they sing in.
Singing in Japanese because it's 'cool' =/= not cool Singing in English to music influenced by music you enjoy = much better
I don't really know what the exact situation here is, so I can't really comment on it directly -- like, ARE they fluent? If not, you'd might as well being singing God Save the Queen in Swedish because the lyrics aren't going to have much meaning for ANYONE.

Put it this way: seperate, they'll be 90% fluent, together: 100% fluent. *laughs* *I'm helping them out with that, too. Although, I'm not 100% fluent myself.* Like I said, *or may not have mentioned?* the vocalist is a Japanese GUY. Their only concern is how people will react to a band with a Japanese vocalist and everyone else is of completely different heritages (i.e. Haruko is Phillippino, Ten-chan is caucasion). I told them I'd DIE if they weren't doing this for the sake of art. Trust me, Haruko-chan's a perfectionist. She would never want the band to emberrass theirselves onstage by being horrid at what they do. They just don't want hate mail from thousands of upset Japanese school-girls sweatdrop

I say go for it.
You may get crap, but if you are good, it won't matter.
And I know what you mean. I actually sing a hell of a lot better in Japanese than English.
I guess it just flows better with my voice.
