If anyone can believe it, I wrote a quick triple-drabble based on John Steinbeck's 'Grapes of Wrath'... Feel free to question my sanity.
Rosasharn's not mine.

Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.
~*~

Rose of Sharon stares out at the night. To observers, she is wondering, maybe even worrying about someone. They cannot know who, but by the pair of rings on her finger, they can make a guess. They think it is for the husband off fighting in the war. The war that somehow came after the war that was supposed to end all wars.

She wonders about him and worries about him. Her good man, her husband who’s off fighting Nazis or Japs… She isn’t sure which; so much of what he writes home gets blacked out by the censors. They say it keeps him safer and she resigns herself to it, although she doesn’t understand why they think it’s a risk for her to know where Jason is.

Jason, tall with red hair.

Rose of Sharon is now Mrs. Jason O’Brian. Mother of Lulabelle and Mercedes, red-headed twins.

Usually, Rose of Sharon worries about Jason and about the girls – what might become of them if Daddy doesn’t come home.

She never tells anyone that once in a while, she worries about someone else.

How does she explain the man in the barn? She has not seen him since. Is he alive? Is he dead? Did she manage to really help? All she can say is she tried. She doesn’t even know his name.

She never told her husband about that, and she knows Ma didn’t, and doubts any other part of her kin would tell Jason, but she doesn’t know for sure. Ruthie’s big mouth never got any smaller.

She wonders, is it somehow disloyal not to tell Jason? Jason knows about Connie, knows everything else about her past except the man in the barn. The man in the barn who probably changed her life more than anyone else. The man in the barn and maybe her angel baby.

I must say, I've never read the Grapes of Wrath (though I was going to....), so I can't offer much, I think. However, I enjoyed this piece, short as it is. The curiosity, and the mystery it presents really draws you in. Just what happen? What will happen? All questions you ask, but each has indefinite answers. Simple, short, and thought-provoking, for me. Nice ^^
