The snow whipped about Ryu's form as he sprinted through the frozen streets of the city. His vision was blurry, his lungs ablaze, and his muscles aching. He took a deep swallow of oxygen and finally decided to stop near an alley way. Ryu leaned against the brick wall and closed his eyes, tilting his head back ever so slightly in an attempt to calm himself. It was futile. How could he calm himself? He had just murdered the girl he loved and now he's a fugitive on the run from his own son! Ryu lowered his gaze once again to the snow around his dirty black boots. Nothing would ever be the same for him. Even his death couldn't play out as it should. No one should ever have to know when they are going to die. Ryu shook his head and moved away from the alley back into the street. As soon as he did so, a bright light cut through the icey veil and illuminated him. Ryu raised a hand to shield his sight, growling slightly at the sound of a helicopter hovering above. "Put your hands up! You are under arrest! Comply or we will be forced to take aggressive action!" came a voice over the vehicle's loudspeaker. Ryu lowered his hand and smirked. He wouldn't comply. It wasn't his nature to let others tell him what to do, even if it meant risking his life. Well, he was dead either way it went. Ryu suddenly sprinted forward, listening as the sound of his boots crunched through the snow and ice. The helicopter backed up slightly to keep him in its sight when suddenly a police car came swirving around the corner and started down the street at Ryu at high-speed. Ryu had only a split second to react. It felt as if time itself had slowed down, almost like he was under water. The car drew closer and Ryu lept up, planted his left foot on the hood, and then used every ounce of his strength to propel himself upward. His hands found their mark and he clinged onto one of the helicopter's landing legs. The police car below screeched to a halt and the officers jumped out, wielding their firearms. A few shots rang out, but each missed. Ryu hung on for as long as his arms could sustain his weight. He looked below and noticed a moving charter bus. He closed his eyes, breathed deeply, then released his grip. The man plumited downward and landed with a loud thud on the roof of the bus. He rolled towards the back of the moving vehicle, pushed his weight forward, and leaped from the bus to the street below. He landed in a pile of snow that someone had shoveled out of their driveway. Ryu stood, brushing off the ice. His gaze returned to the confused officers and the searching helicopter. He quickly pulled his hood over his head and vanished back into the night...

This is just a very short section of a story I've been working on called Redemption: Final Hours. Its revolved around my character Ryu who has a dream (or vision) about his own death. He knows WHEN its going to occur, but he doesn't know HOW its going to occur. In his panic, he accidently murders his lover who just returned from the store. Ryu didn't know who she was at first, thinking she could possibly be some murderer, but once he discovered it was Eve's (his lover) corpse on the floor, he paniced. Ryu quickly took to the streets and became a fugitive. The body was discovered by Eve's parents and reported, putting Ryu's son Theolus on the case, since homicide was his speciality and the only suspect involved would be his own father. The story is set in a 24 hour period where he is either stalking the strees of the city in the snowy night or seeking help from old friends or even wasting time in a strip club. He tries to hard to stop his own fate from coming true that it begins to drive him almost insane, leading to the death of another innocent. Ryu runs and runs, but knows deep down that there is nothing he can do to prevent his death. At each turn, Theolus draws closer to catching his father, but at the same time discovers that Ryu is not who he claims to be. He is, indeed, something much, much darker. As the story plays out, hints to his past are revealed (unless you already read my work Redemption: Awakening or Redemption: Darkness of the Soul then you already know) and he begins to think that perhaps it was time he died. The story is ALMOST complete. I still have a few kinks to work out towards the end, but its all good. Also, the theme of the story is the belief that free will is an illusion and reincarnation DOES exsist. The setting changes at times from depressing to almost suicidal, to romantic and back to depressing. Its a tale of one souls attempt to save himself from death, but fails no matter how hard he tries. "You can not change your fate...no man can."
