And the forests were up in the morning again, waking with the people and stretching their scraggly limbs in the sun before shining up their new leaves and wearing them even with the dew still on. And the wind shook its way through them, little dewdrops raining slow down to earth.

The leaves covered the sun in aesthetic patterns that shone shadows down, too. Judas hid in one of them, seeming to stare up through the leaves and at the sun, like a contest of light. Meanwhile, his owner of sorts was in the path, tracing her fingers through the leaves.

"It's getting awful warm," she remarked, and slipped her shoes off. A personal choice: no shoes of hers had laces. Not on her watch.

Judas flickered, wavered on his end, and then returned to his watching of the sun.

Verne flicked a smile, wavered on her toes, and then glanced about her. Assured no one was there, she pointed her foot behind her, shifted weight onto it and then back as she traveled ... the step died out before the leap. She always felt nervous when she wasn't sure if someone was watching. She tried again: this time, after the chassé, she swung her legs up and leaped: a grand jeté dessus en tournant, or tour jeté. An easy step, but satisfying.

She let go then. Dancing was easiest without thought. And eyes that watched.

It wasn't even as if she had anywhere to go, really. It may've been her style to treat other people like a different species, which for all intents and purposes of hers they were, but it certainly was not her style to stay inside all day, as much as her waterlogged pet or was that backwards would insist.

But that was mean. It wasn't at all that she didn't care for him anymore. She cared for him lots. He was her lampthing. She liked him terribly and he was very pretty. There was resentment, though. She really hated that. She supposed she was becoming rather masochistic in her attentions for him, which was hideously silly seeing as how he was in fact a lightbulb, so she decided to take herself out.

It was only a little disheartening that she had nowhere to go. She'd been to town a handful of times, to get a handful of things so slimy after disuse that she wondered why she'd gotten them. Last time she came back with five tins of tuna and oh look, that fat electrician's closed down. She didn't eat tuna. She'd let her mind wander and remembered she had a cat before she remembered it wasn't true. She considered emptying the tins into the pool to simulate the sea but Yablochkov was having none of that and she did have to drink it, after all, so she opened them up one by one and set them in a neat row among the roots of her tree.

Four days later they sat untouched but for a thin film of whiteness on top so she gathered them tenderly together and placed them in the garbage and sighed. Things could be terribly disappointing, sometimes.

This time, though, she was only going for a stroll. A stroll for herself. She really hadn't meant to take Blotch along at all but the bucket had been so close to her pully and it would seem a slight, wouldn't it, what with him leaning right there and all. So she scooped it full of clear water and slipped him inside and hooked it onto her arm as she pulled herself down.

She'd gotten used to the moves by now.

Blotch made languid doughnuts through the bucket's tiny insides and she walked like a milkmaid, and closed her eyes so she could better feel the little drops that fell onto them both.

Judas noticed them before Verne even remembered Judas. He couldn't make noise and wake her from this half-hypnotized, generally self-entranced state but he wouldn't have anyway, he would watch instead; these people, everything so interesting, sprung from the ground like trees sometimes with their ridiculous heels and shoes. What he did, he stood up at them, small but sophisticated.
