Although at first her gait had been slow and unsure, Sukari's confidence gained with every step she took, and her determination shone through her azure irises as she quickened her pace towards the two-leggers' village. She'd received word that Alora had gone on a murderous rampage and killed some of the villagers, but had been stopped by a rogue stallion. No doubt her anger had gotten the best of her, and caused her downfall- she didn't intend to make the same mistake. She was headed to that village to finish the job; to make sure the filthy humans didn't dare return to salvage that settlement.

She half-expected to encounter some sort of resistance- perhaps the stallion that had stopped Alora- but there was none; she almost laughed at the easiness of it all. Was it really going to be this simple, to drive away the miserable two-leggers? They must have been weaker than she thought. Truly, a species as weak as this shouldn't be allowed to rule over them, should they? No, humans didn't deserve that title.

Ebon' tipped ears pinning back against her skull, Sukari paused near the village's border, a gleam coming to her eyes as she recognized the smoke rising from the ravaged village. The carnage was a sight for her sore eyes- finally, some justice had been done! She didn't give that Alora enough credit, it seemed.

A fiery stallion stole through the night, his pace becoming more desperate as he pushed onward, towards the human village. Nanaki tried not to think about the fight that was undoubtedly to come as he pushed himself to his limits, speeding towards what he knew would be a confrontation.

As much as he would have liked to believe that everything would turn out all right, a dark sense of foreboding hung over him like a cloud. Something wasn't right- he could feel it in his bones. Nanaki had a sixth sense for this sort of thing, and it had never led him astray before. If he had only known just who lie ahead, he might have been able to steel himself against the sudden despair that flooded him at the sight of a very familiar winged mare.

As it was, nothing could prevent the wave of desolation that accompanied his recognition of the silver female- the recognition of what she was doing and the fact that he would have to fight her filling him with a deep sadness and reluctance as he stumbled uncharacteristically, skidding to a halt as he panted to catch his breath.

For a moment, nothing was said as icy blue met fiery gold. Nanaki knew Sukari better than anyone- he'd even considered her a sister- but he could never condone what she was about to do, and she knew it.

"Why?"

Sukari couldn't honestly say she was surprised to see him- she had been expecting to encounter some sort of resistance, after all- but she never imagined it would have been him. Disappointment clouded her features for a brief moment before it was schooled back into her emotionless mask, but she knew she hadn't fooled him- she never could.

"You dare ask me why, when you already know the answer?" she sneered, a disbelieving snort accompanying her incredulous inquiry. He knew the horrors of her past- at least, a few of them. She knew he'd never approve of what she'd been planning, but she never thought that he'd be the one to try to stop her.

Nanaki was wise, powerful, and had a great deal more experience in fighting than her- he would no doubt be a formidable opponent. Sukari wasn't intimidated, though- if anything, she was thrilled at the prospect of fighting a worthy adversary. It had been a long time since she had indulged in violence; she dare not think of why she had avoided it for so long, as she might lose her nerve.

Nanaki did know the answer, unfortunately- after he had heard her story, he immediately wished he hadn't asked. He couldn't imagine having to live with the things she did, what she carried with her every day... but it didn't make what she was doing right.

"You know I can't let you do this," he murmured softly, remorsefully. "Don't make me fight you, Sukari, I have no desire to. Stop this now, while you still can, please."

He knew his protests would go unheard- if he knew anything about this mare, it was that she would never willfully back down from a challenge. In most cases, neither would he... unless it was for the greater good.

The fiery stallion let his golden hues slip closed briefly as he conjured up the image of a white, pink and blue winged mare, smiling briefly before the image faded, and his eyes opened once more. The single blue feather in his short mane ruffled in the gentle breeze, and he silently asked the spirits for help in being able to make it back to her, after this fight, if he lived.

A vicious smile curved upwards on the mare's onyx maw, cerulean hues narrowing into slits as she shifted her position into a slight crouch- ready to charge on a moment's notice. Excitement was beginning to boil in her blood- adrenaline running through her long cold and empty veins. This fight would be the highlight of her month, she was sure- and she wasn't afraid to die. It wasn't as if anyone would actually miss her, right? The only one who knew her story was Guilian, and she wasn't self-deluded enough to think that he actually cared about her. She welcomed the chance for solace, blackness... a chance to see her brother again.

"Why 'Naki, don't be a fool... why on earth would I pass up an opportunity to fight you and rid this world of another deluded stallion? Don't try to con me- I know you don't like the fact that the two-leggers rule over this world- over us- either."

Golden irises narrowed at the insincerity of the nickname- the only one who called him by that name was Shim, and she was his little sister. Sukari had no right to be so familiar with him... not after this. Betrayal was not something that he took lightly, no matter how much he wished he could rely on diplomacy.

He bristled at the implication that he may have the same intentions as her, muscles tensing in anticipation as he shifted his own position in preparation. "I may not be thrilled at the prospect of being beneath another species, but it doesn't mean I want them dead. What about Kyai? She's always been kind to you, even if you haven't been receptive of her kindness. Are you going to murder her in cold blood as well? Just like your brother?"

Bringing up her past in this situation was a gamble. It could frighten her enough into seeing reason, or it could enrage her enough to attack him without any additional provocation (although Nanaki was fairly certain this outcome was inevitable, anyway, so he really had nothing to lose). Either way, he was sure he was digging up ghosts that Sukari would have rather left forgotten, and he would pay the price for it.

Azure orbs darkened with an unspeakable rage as the orange stallion spoke of her deceased brother, jaw tightening in blind fury as her teeth ground together. He had just crossed an unspeakable line- she was sure he knew that, and it enraged her even more. How dare he? Who was he to stand there and preach to her about life and death, right and wrong, when he hadn't endured a single thing that she had been forced to live with for most of her life?

"You will regret ever having spoken those words to me, Nanaki," she spat his name like a curse, practically glowing with fury as her upper lip curled back in a feral snarl. Her blood was boiling now, and she was itching for a long, bloody fight with the male who had dared to bring her past into this. The prospect of death was irrelevant.

Rearing back on her hind legs with a loud bay towards the night sky, Sukari launched herself forward, teeth bared, at the object of her anger.

Oh yes, he would pay dearly.

~ Fade in ~

Both soquili were battered and bloody- dark crimson stains tainting both silver and red fur; a broken and mangled wing, a torn and lacerated leg, and two very exhausted combatants later; one stood above the other, victorious.

Looking down through narrowed eyes at the mare that had caused all this mayhem, Nanaki let a low growl rumble through his chest as cerulean met molten amber. Her expression was flat- she knew she was defeated, and was no doubt waiting for him to strike the killing blow- only he didn't.

Stepping away with a heavy limp from her mangled body, Nanaki's eyes didn't leave hers as he spoke in a low, serious voice. "Leave this place, Sukari. You are no longer welcome here. If I catch you here again, it won't simply be my wrath that you face."

With that, he turned to leave, casting a lingering glare on her prone form as he did so.

Sukari struggled to pull herself to her knees, lip turning upwards in disgust at his act of kindness. Why didn't he kill her? She had lost the damn fight, hands down!

"Mercy is a sign of weakness, you know," she taunted snidely, disregarding the growing pool of blood that was forming beneath her body. She wasn't afraid to die- hell, death was better than this humiliation! "Do you think a skinwalker or kalona would grant you the same 'kindness' that you have showed me? Do you think they would reconsider taking your life if they knew you had spared mine?"

She snarled when he didn't answer her, dragging herself forward a few feet and shouting after him, "Answer me, dammit!"

His uneven steps halted at the angry shout, an audible sigh escaping his mouth as he turned his head to fix one golden eye upon the petite silver form that had caused him so much grief and strife. "Mercy is not a weakness. It takes courage to let someone live- especially when they are out for your blood. Only a coward kills needlessly. And no, I would not expect the same courtesy from another- kindness is not conditional. It isn't something to be bought or repaid. I pray that you acquire a heart enough to learn that someday, Sukari."

And then he was gone, orange-red form melting into the shadows as the flame lit his way... back to his beloved.

Although she would never, ever admit it, Nanaki's words had shaken her. Was she truly so deluded that her perception of good and bad had been distorted to the point of paranoid delerium? What had become of her? Would she truly kill without remorse, as she claimed to be able to? Had she learned nothing from her brother's death???

That last question chilled her to the core. What was she doing? Was this really the way Kureno would want her to be living her life? Suffocated by guilt, agonizing over her mistakes... bringing misery to any soul that happened to cross her path? 'What have I become?'

Being unable to answer that question was incomprehensible to Sukari. Already dizzy from the blood loss, her struggling wasn't helping matters much, and a voice in the back of her head was telling her to simply surrender to the darkness. Hesitantly, she obeyed, and the blackness consumed her vision as she drifted into oblivion.
