the ancient chinese always belived that you must train your spirit along with your body. they have found methods of increasing or just strenghting your chi.
chi is like... mana or something... its paralel to your life force. in isai part of our training is to learn how to "breathe chi". in this proccess you extract some chi and replace it with some from the surrounding that doesnt use it, such as... trees or something.

before you call me a freak of some sort, read on.

i am not a master of the proccess, farthermore i'm unable to show it to someone who isnt capable of sensing it. now, i used to belive in the existance of chi less and less untill my level of belief reached to about 0.1%.
today, as a joke and to amuse myself, i decided to "extract" some chi at my cat.
the effect was just ******** creepy...
he lied on his back and started sneezing ALOT eek
my cat doesnt sneeze... he just doesnt eek

so, in order to assist other martial artists i shall try to explain how to "breathe chi".

first, close your eyes and take long breathes.
as you breathe, slowly release pressure of your muscles.
continue breathing deeply and slowly.
immagine that there's a large ball of light infornt of you.
belive in the existance of the ball, see the ball, feel the ball, but do not open your eyes. at this point, if all preformed correctly your breath will become unnaturally slow. i got as low as one breath in 3 minutes.
at this point extract chi from inside your body into the ball and take new chi.
however, if you preform this incorectly you will just stand/sit there like an idiot whee

after youre done, you will feel rather refreshed. do not overdo the proccess or you will become depended on it and you will need larger doses each time.

same here. I practice that a lot. Except I call it ki, the japanese name for it.

Okay, I'm sorry, but all of that is not what I have been taught at all.

Holding your breath is BAD for chi. Slow, controlled breathing is good, but one breath every three minutes? BAD. Chi is a flowing entity, like a river, and what makes it flow? Breathing. Steady, controlled breathing is how to keep up a good ki flow. Holding your breath stops it completely.

Secondly, chi is replaced by breathing constantly. There is no need for all this talk of replacement of "balls" and "lights". Chi in Japanese is "ki", which literally means "air" or "breath".

Thirdly, where did you learn this? It sounds an awful lot like stuff I have read on "psionics" websites.

And finally, Kikakku my dear, I don't know what Buddhist meditation you've been doing, but that just ain't anything like it. Holding your breath.... no. Controlled, constant breathing. Closing your eyes.... no. You should have eyes almost, but not completely shut. Balls? No.

As a Zen Buddhist, who has learnt from a Japanese Buddhist monk about both meditation AND ki control, that's all I have to say.

i'm not holding my breath... i think....
i just breathe so slowly it takes me about 1 minute to inhale, 3 minutes for the oxygen to be complitley used, about 5 seconds to remove co2 out of body.

i learned this from my isai teacher.
isai is combined from thai-chi, phai-gen-non (sp) and bunch of other stuff i cant remember, nor spell.

i admit i'm probably exagurating, because i never actually measured that with a clock... sweatdrop
i count seconds.

3 minutes to use oxygen = holding your breath.

And I learnt my techniques from Yamai Sensei, a Japanese Monk whose family teaches their own style of Aikijutsu, and he's a man who has also spent several years at the Shaolin temple in China.

Invasion? There was a revolution, but no invasion.

And I couldn't tell you. To be honest, I didn't go up to my Grand Master and say "Oh, Shaolin Temple? What year?".

Personaly, I think that it's in your head. If you tell yourself something is possoble, you can do it. Like those people who walk on burning coals. They tell themselves that their Gods will keep them safe until they are in an almost trance like state. At this point, the coals that would otherwise burn their flesh off has no effect on them at all. This is for real.

it's called visualisation, mate.. for example by visualizing you can 'direct your ki/chi' through your body, as they do in Tai-Chi for example to create fa-jing, they visualise their chi getting absorbed into their bones as they inhale. stuff like that. the ball of light he was talking about is also a visualization.
You shouldn't talk in such a way anyway, it's not as if you know everything
and Ki as in the universal lifeforce is a word that you can truly comprehend and interpret if your japanese is really good. Translating Ki as 'air' or 'breath' is very wrong i'm afraid.

Oh, i'm also a zen-buddhist but there are other types of meditation too you know and in some meditations visualisation is required though (not in zen i know that).

when i meditate for energy, i put my thumbs together a tips and make it so it's like i'm holding a ball, and try to feel energy and cultivate it in a sphere in my head, it's not physically there, but i try to put my energy there so i can practice getting it up and reating it.
