The story is at least interesting, but what really sets Final Fantasy II apart from the others, in my eyes, is how completely taken off-guard Square obviously was by the success of Final Fantasy I. I like to think that Square, back in the mid/late-'80s, was largely comprised of a bunch of post-college computer fanboys, hopeful for success and pleased as punch when they managed to hire Nasir Gebelli. At any rate, when it came time to make FF2, they apparently decided to go all-out as far as changing up their system - the way character stats develop to how magic is acquired/organized to the item system to crafting a story that reads more like a novel to integrating freaking character portraits - not every change was necessarily positive, but every single one was at least evocative of new ideas being brainstormed and put into play.
