Has anybody heard anymore new about the sequel for the musical, The Phantom of Manhattan? Incase for those who do not know, on the 9th of April 2007, Andrew Lloyd Webber announced on his website that he would turn the novel, Phantom of Manhattan, into a musical sequel. The original book was by Frederick Forsyth in 1999 for those who wanted to know. I'm personally not looking forward for a sequel. It may sound strange, but I would prefer to just continue to read fanfiction over ALW producing a new musical. Ecspecially since the book did not rate very well. (On Amazon.com, the book generally rates around 1 to 2 stars out of five). What annoys me the most is that Forsyth had the nerve to say that Leroux was "wrong", incorrect and stupid. How can the original author be incorrect on a character which they invented. Or according to Leroux really did exist. More information can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom_of_Manhattanhttp://www.phantomoftheopera.com/cdaae/pofmanhattan.html

That's just stupid... to me. I saw a review of the book and it sounded really bad, so I hope it's not made into a movie. That really just makes me want to read that book even less *laughs*.

I've heards tons of bad reviews on this book.
Too bad ALW decided to base his musical sequel off it. I hope he changes the plot or at least cancels it. Who knows? It might be good...or not.

I HATED the book. I hate to find out how he is going to recreate it. I really hope that someone goes out in the world and burns all of the 'Phantom of Manhattans'. It is horrible, and does not stick at all to the original story and Forsyth has no right to bash Gaston Leroux, for he is the master of the Phantom!!!

But the love you never had is etched in stone forever, Reminding you of what might have been... I won't touch it. The love you never had stays with you like a shadow: So close, but when you reach, there's no one there... -Erik, The Phantom of the Opera, Tom Alonso

Yes according to Leroux Erik really did exist. And he did. Leroux just changed a few things around in his novel to make it more appealing to the public to want to read over and over again. And I too believe that Erik was a real person, reguardless of those who tell me I'm insane. But yes, onto the real subject here. They should NOT make a sequel in any way. ALW annoyed me enough by not including The Persian in the musical and giving Raoul the benefit of actually having a brain in his musical. Which in all respect we all know if it wasn't for The Persian Raoul would of died... oh yeah sorry got off topic again... but yes, as much as i would love to have more of The Phantom of the Opera spread to newer generations a sequel would just ruin the original story. Like you said I'd much rather stick the the fan fic's and what is already here for us to enjoy. biggrin

Elainejoy I've heards tons of bad reviews on this book. Too bad ALW decided to base his musical sequel off it. I hope he changes the plot or at least cancels it. Who knows? It might be good...or not. However far away, I will always love you. However long I stay, I will always love you.
Yet, it still can be infuriating, since the book plainly says "Erik is dead."
No Erik, no sequel. I'm sorry, but if that musical comes out, I refuse to support it, even in my own guild. Whatever words I say, I will always love you, I will always love you.

I am your angel of music... I read the book, and absolutely hated it. I don't like the whole idea of Erik going to New York, and Christine becoming all popular. It takes away from the whole romantic love-story aspect of it. If it ends up coming to NY though, i have to see it so i can criticize it =P
I read somewhere that ALW started composing music for the sequel, but his cat ate it and he had to start over. yay for cats! (^)_^

Come to me, angel of music
