There are just a few simple rules that we ask that you follow during your time here:
  1. No flaming, racist, overly-derogatory, etc. comments. Admittedly, we aren't much for political correctness, but we still don't want you to go around calling our members niggers, crackers, or anything else along those lines. In the end, it just comes down to where we draw the line with this kind of thing.
  2. Use proper grammar and English. If English isn't your first language, then please don't go to extraordinary lengths to make your posts flawless--we don't want you killing yourself over it. However, all native English speakers should always have proper grammar and spelling in this guild. No, we aren't grammar Nazis with this, but we do understand the difference between a simple mistake and simply not putting forth any effort in your posts.
  3. As always, abide by Gaia's TOS and wot. No, admittedly, no one ever reads it, but common sense should tell you what is and is not permissible.
  4. Just stay active, after all, no one likes a guild whore. All that we ask is that you drop by every so often and leave a few posts so that we know that you actually care about the guild and haven't completely forgotten about it. Just for reference, inactive accounts will be banned from the guild without any further explanation. If you feel that you were banned without just cause, contact a guild administrator about it and we will see if your concern is just.

What we do
We are a guild created to not only promote educated discussion, but also to hopefully diminish the "n00b" factor throughout Gaia. By this, we refer not only to those who frequently use "chatspeak" and "txt tlk," but also those who put no effort into their posts, leaving with nothing more than a two-bit reply to a topic. Though we are not technically a guild centered around improving the state of the Extended Discussion forum, it is generally our main point of focus as, by definition, it is a place "where users can have in-depth discussions and involved debates on specific topics." However, this is very seldom the case today, as one can easily tell by simply reading the list of topics on the first page of the forum. So, it is for this reason that though we are not officially on an endeavor to "reclaim" the ED, one will find that most of our energy goes into such.

wahmbulance Understanding N00bs wahmbulance

Rage Metal
Whenever I come to the ED, along with other EDers, I tend to see a fair share of spamming topics. What I never get (besides the fact of why people respond to these) is why n00bs create these abominations in our beloved ED forum, and set themselves up to get flamed like an out-of-control stove. So, it's time for some discussion on the n00bs:

Why do they create these threads when they likely know full well the "inferno" that awaits them? I'd like to hear from as many people as possible on this, and I'd like to get many different theories on this.

Well, it largely depends on the individual and no single, universal meaning can be assigned to explain their actions. Rather, they can be further classified into various sects (as in a class or kind of person, not a religious order). Some motivational factors could be defined as:
  • Perhaps the most prevalent factor among true n00bs is simply a lack of information else the motivation or drive to expend the energy necessary to determine where to place a post. In such cases, the user will generally pick a forum at random, completely ignoring the forum rules or "stickies" located at the top of the page in his or her endeavor for the instant gratification of creating a topic.
  • Tailing the above group are those who know exactly what it is that they are doing, but simply do not care. This can be caused either by the mild mental retardation commonly seen in "n00bs" or other cause of impaired judgment. If neither of the above, then the poster is likely trying to garner attention in what they perceive to be the most becoming way possible.
  • Third would be the trolls. Though a dying breed (by this I mean that most "trolls" are simply glorified n00bs who are posting nonsense), trolls are nonetheless prevalent in today's online society. They can typically be classified by posts either containing perverse images or other inflammatory or derogatory content.
  • And finally, perhaps the smallest sect; a subdivision of trolls. These are classified as those who unknowingly post content that could be classified as "trolling" out of stupidity rather than out of malicious intent. These are those in society who are destined to work behind the counter of a McDonald's for all of thirty years.

So, they're all pretty much idiots then. ^.^

ED Stickies
ED should be a place for users to have informed, engrossing discussions on topics that interest them and to read about and learn about issues that they are not as familiar with from users who are more familiar. It is not a place to dump opinions and leave, to not support those opinions, or to make short, contentless posts.

I've gone into the ED quite a bit lately only to find spam and misplaced threads that members of this guild have responded to but NOT REPORTED. I've also personally gotten one or two notes from people asking about the proper conduct concerning bashing/reporting n00bist threads.

Original Gaia ED Guideline Stickies
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8056431
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11895888

But I'm going to go into a bit more depth on the subject.

=== REPORT THE THREAD ===

What use is it to just bump a spam thread up and up and up in the ED without reporting it? None. First step should be to click that little red link at the bottom of the thread that says "Report this thread".

If you answer yes to one of the following questions, you can safely report the thread. Reasons and remedies that you can post in your retort are below each reason.

wahmbulance Is the OP asking for personal advice?
If the OP is asking for relationship advice for girlfriends, boyfriends, family situations, etc., first report the thread and give the reason "Non-ED material: personal advice". Then, if you so choose, reply to their post by politely telling them that they are in the wrong forum and direct them here. Do NOT flame them. Do NOT use offensive graphics. These people usually are making the simple mistake of debate vs. discussion and they don't need a hissy fit made over it. They're newbies, not n00bs.

wahmbulance Is the OP spam/porn?
If the OP is nothing but a troll posting porn or non-sense babble, again, first REPORT the thread. You need not do anything more than that as technically it is against the ED rule stickies to do so. However, it is a common trend that avid EDers reply to the post with a smart a** insult. Engage if you wish at your own risk. You can generally tell them that they belong in the chatterbox, but it usually doesn't help. A lot of them are trolls that specifically target the ED. Don't waste your breath.
Note: I do so on a case by case basis. It's fun and if you can be snarky, all the more fun! Just don't be stupid about it.

wahmbulance Is the OP asking for opinions on a non-ED worthy subject?
Generally, this includes topics that are about movies that sucked/ruled, movie stars, TV shows, art, make up, boyz r teh suckzorz, you get the idea. The idea is that these are usually geared for General Discussion or another forum that is aimed specifically for their topic. Report the thread, then do the same as with the first type of misplaced thread: Give them a link to the proper forum.
Forum links can be obtained here.

wahmbulance Is the OP so horrifically grammatically flawed that you cannot understand it?
Just ignore it or report it, depending on how badly it's flawed. Do not engage in graphics or flaming. Simply advise the OP that they should employ proper english grammar if they wish to be taken seriously in the ED. Simple as that.

== N00B BASHING IMAGES & GRAPHICS ==

As a member of the N00B Ignorance Prevention Guild, you are responsible for ending n00bism as much as possible. Part of this n00bism comes from the posting and bumping with n00b bashing graphics. These graphics do not prevent n00bs from posting. If anything, they only egg them on to do worse. Please do not post them in the ED.

=== QUOTING POSTS ===

Nothing pisses me right the ******** off worse than people who are genuine EDers but quote an entire huge post. It's ridiculous and it's SPAM in it's own way. It is NOT needed, especially if you are either among the first responders or you are replying directly to the OP. ONLY quote a post if you wish to address specific points without the quote one at a time or in parts. Otherwise, you are just lengthening the page for no reason.

And yes, some of you are guilty of this.

If you have any other questions concerning the ED or handling of N00Bz, feel free to give either me (Ruingaraf) or Kaze an IM/PM.

Thanks for being part of the guild!
Here's to eradicating the ED of n00bism!
