It exists, don't doubt that. (We wouldn't be here otherwise). But it's a twisted kind of love. I mean, what kind of love pushes someone to bait and test Sasuke like this? What do you think could have happened to Itachi, pushed him to massacre his clan?
It was most likely a gradual thing for there were signs that he had come to hate the oppression of the clan. But back then, it was the thought of Sasuke, probably the only one whom he cared for, that always stopped him.
Yet, he eventually did kill the clan.
So what do you think? What is Itachi's purpose in bringing Sasuke down the path of vengeance? What do you think he is trying to show him?

those are really good questions...
in fact, those are the biggest questions in all the naruto plot (for me =o)
it's obvious that when itachi told sasuke why he killed all their clan, he was lying
he really has other plans... wonder if these are evil plans or something else
-> i'm sure that kisimoto-sensei is really going to surprise us o.o
anyways, i'm sure itachi still loves his brother a lot even if he doesn't really show it^^;

Mandara Uchiha filled poor Itachi's mind with evil things. XD Telling him how corrupt they were. XDD Eventually, he threatened to kill Sasuke if Itachi didn't kill everyone. Itachi felt pain for putting Sasuke through that, but he can't kill himself or Mandara kills Sasuke! So he makes Sasuke hate him. *ish shot* Yeahhh...That doesn't work out so well. XD

Here's what I think.
He probably killed everyone in the clan cuz he didn't want Sasuke to go through the same thing he did and he knew that Sakura felt even more pressued than himself. Itachi, as the prodigy, was expected to be the best at everything. Sasuke, as Itachi's brother, is expetced to be like Itachi or try to surpass him. Itachi knew the pressure he (Itachi) was being put on for being the prodigy and didn't want Sasuke to go through the same thing.
He believes in Sasuke's potential so he had to bring it out one way. If he murdered everyone and pushed Sasuke to hate him in order to get powerful enough then, Sasuke will surpass him like he shoud. I think Itachi wants Sauske to surpass him and kill him. Maybe to make amends for killing everyone.
Maybe Itachi wants Sasuke to be the best he can be and be powerful, without having the clan to pressure him or nag him about everything. Perhaps he wants Sasuke to achieve power on its own in his own way.

It may not have been the main reason, but protecting Sasuke from growing up like him, or growing up to be like him, os probably part of why Itachi killed their clan.

To see if he stilled loved him, especially when He said, If you wish to kill me Hate me. I think he was testing him to see if he still loves him. I actually wonder whats going to happen at the end of the anime, hmmmm, *sits in a chair and thinks for numerus days, and still continuing*

Somehow, I think in the end, Itachi will still be alive because Sasuke let him live. Just a hunch.

Itachi killed the clan on the council's orders. The Uchihas, being led by Sasuke's and Itachi's father, were planning a take over of Konoha. Itachi, being an ANBU and being sworn to Konoha's service as well as being the only one who could pull off such a feat, was given the task of eliminating the eminent threat. If you notice, Itachi is wearing his ANBU uniform during the massacre. Sasuke was spared because he had no knowledge of the plans for Uchiha domination. I doubt Itachi would have killed him anyways even if he had known. Instead of letting it be known that the council ordered such a thing to be done, Itachi had agreed to leave the village and let it be said that he had gone crazy. Even joining the Akatsuki had been on the council's orders and he sent in reports on their activities. It is believed that these reports were sent to Jiraiya so they would not be intercepted on their way to Konoha therefore giving away the ruse. This would explain why Jiraiya has so much information on the akatsuki and why he knew their plans. As for Itachi telling Sasuke to hate him, yes, he wanted Sasuke to be stronger. Before the massacre occured, they showed a flashback of Itachi telling Sasuke that he would always be the obstacle he would have to overcome, even if it meant Sasuke hating him. So in his weird, twiste3d way, Itachi loves his brother dearly and wants him to be strong enough to overcome anything.

And now it also revealed that Itachi didn't do it alone, Madara Uchiha snuck into the compound and helped him kill off the clan.
