The book is notorious because of that. I was reading it at school and everyone was giving me looks. A friend of mine told me that John lennon's murderer was reading the book before he died. I didn't know it at the time. O_O

But it's a good book. I've heard many people say it isn't exactly their cup of tea and that it's boring but at least I liked it. surprised It sort of changes your perspective on a few things.

Of Course its a real book. I didn't like it all that much, but its one of those "classics" from the mid 20th century. It's about this guy named Holden Caufield (I think, maybe I'm mixed up) an the whole story is one day of his life, looking back, doing things, and nothing really exciting happenning. It's not too bad, just a little strange. Maybe I was too young when I read it

It is of course, a real book. However, it is not as deep and socially significant book as GITS likes to make it out to be. When I read it I thought the main character was contrived and shallow. Since he's the focus for any social revelations the book has to offer, I found it less the provocative.

Its a good read though I lost my copy halfway through and couldn't find it again crying some of the stuff GITS talks about is in there so that was cool, I'm trying to find all the authours they were talking about.

i wouldn't really say that he's (houlden) shallow, it's all to do with salinger's thing for zen, if you read franny&zoe you'd see that too. people aren't too used to thinking of things in his terms and so it may be a bit hard to comprehend, but you may be able to understand better if you had an idea of how zen works. houlden's all about not making distinctions, or maintaining innocence, or adam and eve while they were still in the garden, the state where you know no shame, there is no right or wrong, but since that state is difficult to attain and live with in our world of "sin," he had a hard time finding a way to survive and got confused. he saw things in a different way, but not a way that i would call shallow or childish. more childlike than childish if you know how to distinguish between the two. innocence and shallowness may be similar enough to be confused for one or the other, but there is still a differentiation between them. aoi seemed to have a bit of the houlden feel, or at least at first when he "kidnapped" the guy and threatened to shoot him, it's that same inability to accept the dirty reality that houlden had, what turned him "loony" so to speak.

but what i want to know is how they were able to use salinger's work in the anime? does that not go against copyright? it's hard for me to imagine that they could have gotten permission to use it in the anime, at least from what i've heard about salinger.

and about the interpretation in the anime, i wouldn't say that it's deeper or more significant than in the book, more like it's more romanticized. i'm not familiar with salinger's laughing man, but i believe the reference in the episode where the tachikoma wandered out and met that girl and she was talking about that goldfish story is also from catcher, referring to the story houlden's brother wrote, a story that houlden admired, but then the story's idea was completely changed in the anime, or more like the story was completely changed, but considering all the salinger references, i think that the original idea was indeed the goldfish story in catcher.

but my main question is how the heck did they get the rights to reference catcher or any of salinger's works? he doesn't even let anyone make movies of his books and he's supposedly got so many manuscripts that he hasn't even published, so how did catcher and the laughing man end up in gits? not that that's not a good thing, but this thing's really been bugging me...

1919 - 2007 he's 88 years old. As for how GitS can use his work, they aren't merely referencing many themes and idea's presented with in. They also use short quotes, always make a reference, and have yet to actually make any of his works into any style of animation.

As they are only references and not reprinting or creating video stories of his work, they don't violate copyright.

then that means if one really worked it out and only referenced it, one could also put it in a movie? as long as you don't really make it a catcher in the rye movie, only a movie that uses catcher in the rye for its theme and reference, a movie could be made legally that way as well? so if people really did want to use the resource, they'd still be able to find some way around the law and still come up with something creative? it'd be kinda interesting if they did that instead of trying to make a direct movie replica of a book.

though i don't mean to disrespect salinger, many people seem to be looking forward to what may happen after his death, and i have to say that i could probably be counted as one of them. whether his mystery manuscripts will be brought to public and published or people get the rights to make movies out of his work or what. the more private he was with his work, the more mysterious his work and person became, like wanting something all the more just because you can't have it, but in his case people really saw something in his work and there really is something (possibly something really great) to anticipate.

though i didn't completely agree with all the interpretations of catcher in gits, it fit into the anime nicely and if i ignored the original work i wouldn't really complain about much of it. what gits did was really nice and i think it's really quite advantageous. instead of taking on the ordeal of making a satisfactory catcher in the rye movie, i'm really quite caught with the idea of using the book in a movie as only reference for the theme. there's far more room for creative allowances and since it wouldn't hurt as much if it deviated from the original book. but i guess i'm just too afraid that if they do make a movie, they wouldn't do it well enough to really bring out catcher. all these book based movies coming out these days, i find it inevitable that they try to make catcher after salinger's death, it's just a matter of time, and i'm sure that many people are waiting for it already.
