Their small abode had long since become stuffy. Where once Sukkubus had chattered inanely to Etsu about her old home and life, there was nothing but clipped words and thick silence. It was so random when it had happened - one minute she was speaking to herself, studying magic, and the next...the geisha child shuddered as she meandered outside, hands twisting incessantly from within her sleeves. That book La Magia...something about it struck her as odd; it had such a hold over her caretaker. What had happened?

She had been even worse the next morning.

The masqued girl found herself leaving the house each and every day, just to escape the place she once dared call home. The deafening quiet, the air of hopelessness, nothingness...it had become far too strong a coiling miasma for Etsu; she couldn't handle it, nor could she help. All she managed to do was to worry...

She sealed her upturned eyes shut as she stopped near a tree, head tilting backwards. No need to worry...just calm down. Everything will be alright. Untucking one hand, she allowed her tiny fingers to pass over the rough leaves of a bush, her flickering blue-grey orbs settling on something passed the tree's line. Perhaps exploring would take her mind off of the turmoil building up at home.

"Stop it, my hair is not a chewtoy!"

Emilie was rolling on the ground with a kit the size of a small tiger trying to gnaw on her head. The fact that her head fit so perfectly into the jowls of the 'kit' gave Kittrel perfectly logical reason to try and chew on it - luckily she knew better than to actually sink her teeth down. She rather liked her guardian, and didn't want to bite her head off. Literally.

So instead she chewed on her hair.

"Stop it stop it AUUUUUGH!" Emilie forced a surge of energy to try and push the large animal (which had flopped on her lazily and therefore offered no resistance other than it's massive weight) off of her. She scrambled away as quickly as possible, her eyes widening when she saw Kittrel prop herself up to her feet and crouch down into a pouncing position. A playful little growl eminated from the kit's throat, and Emilie pushed herself to her feet slowly.. very slowly...

..then without a moment's warning she turned tail and ran as fast as she could through the trees.

She could hear the happy yips of the kit coming closer, even as she dodged through the trees expertly to try and lose her. "KIT, STAY. STAAAAAY.. STAY!" She screamed out from behind her, trying to coax the purple beast into proper etiquette.

Finally, after she started to lose her breathe, she swiveled around and put a hand up, palm facing outward toward the oncoming beast.

"SIT."

Kittrel skidded in her tracks, trying not to ram right into her guardian, and promptly flopped on her rear. Her muzzle was an inch from Emilie's palm, which she promptly licked.

".. Good girl."

She turned her head as she heard a rustling, and her keen eyes caught a glimpse of yellow and pink. "Etsu? Are you out here?" What was that girl doing out here alone, where it wasn't safe?

Yondeiru muneno dokoka okude
itsumo kokoro odoru yume wo mitai
kanashimi wa kazoe kirenai keredo

Sometimes she couldn't help but feel selfish, a feeling that made her uncomfortably warm, causing her to lose sensation within the tips of her fingers. It made her eyes burn, caused her body to fold in upon itself. The child could not ward it off; it was like trying to hold the rain back by simply placing your hands over your head. But nowadays, ever since she lacked the full company of her guardian, she selfishly longed for something more. Anything more. A smile, a laugh...

A friend.

Etsu had long since taken a seat next to the tree, her feet tucked neatly beneath her bottom. Her thumb passed over the top of a pearl so many times now that somewhere in her mind she briefly wondered whether or not it had worn out. Looking down at the little object, she smiled wryly and ducked her head.

Kagayaku monowa itsumo kokoni

Her small lips became sad, and her delicate fingers clasped over the orb before lifting it to be tucked within her obi once more.

It wasn't a time for depression, she decided. She had to be rid of it somehow, but every song that came to mind was edged with sadness, or false hope - false since she couldn't feel it herself. She furrowed her brow and lifted her hands to smack her masked cheeks twice. She was determined now. So determined that --

Aa!

Etsu climbed to her feet and drew her hands to her chest, looking around for the source of the voice. A fist curled beneath her chin, though she steeled her eyes; it wouldn't do for a possible enemy to know she was afraid! Wait...that voice...it sounded familiar.

Edging away from the tree, the geisha child looked around in hopes of spotting whoever it was that called her name.

And out popped the little masked geisha, just as Emilie had thought. "What in the world.. what are you doing out here all alone? Don't you know how dangerous it-I SAID STAY!"

Out of the corner of her eye she had caught Kittrel inching closer and closer, thinking the girl had stopped paying attention, and itching to pounce on the new person. Kittrel's furry head turned sharply from Emilie, to Etsu, and back again repeatedly. She just wanted to pounce the girl, was that so wrong?!

But Emilie could tell from the glint in the kit's eyes, and did in fact believe it to be wrong. Or rather, it was a bad idea.

".. As I was saying." Emilie continued, keeping her eye on Kittrel. "Where's yer meal ticket? Is she around?"

Suddenly Kittrel's attention flickered away from the two, and her head arched up sharply, looking to the side. Both of her ears rose slowly, and curved toward the source of a seemingly unheard sound, before she suddenly bounded off in the direction from which it came.

"Kittrel, NO! Er.. Etsu I don't want y-KITTREL COME BACK HERE!" She looked at the kid quickly, giving her a wary glance as she spoke in a rush. "If yer alone come on, I don't feel like leaving you out here alone if there's something Kittrel's got her attention on. It can't be anything good."

She reached out, holding her hand for the girl. If she took it, Emilie would waste no time in pulling her up and dragging her along to chase the kit, who was already far ahead.

She spotted Emilie in no time, and the little geisha smiled faintly even though she barely knew the girl. It was better than running into a complete, complete stranger...right? She took a tenative step forward, before stopping in her tracks when the winged girl had yelled something about staying; she lifted a small hand and pointed at herself, right before noticing the large feline at her side. My! Was that kitten growing! She dropped her hands and tucked them within her sleeves, watching the Rade with the most amused expression.

Of course she'd no idea of the giant kitten's earlier intentions.

Turning her masqued face back to Emilie, she tilted her head and dropped her hands, eyes flicking off to the side. Sukku...the Sukku she had begun to take a liking to was gone, but could she tell her that? She vaguely remembered something about everyone but those like her and her guardian having the inability to hear her. A sad frown came to her eyes; could she make friends even if she lacked a voice to speak with?

Her attention snapped back to the girl's like a stick of bent bamboo finally being released. She found herself taking a hasty step forward, ahead of Emilie as far as her thoughts were concerned; she didn't want to be left alone, and she felt grateful when Emilie stretched her hand out for her. Etsu took it without a second thought, launching into a quick pased jog as she was hauled after Kittrel and whatever poor creature that had caught her eye.

"Good enough," Emilie blurted out quickly as the hand came towards her, and she snatched it up and practically picked Etsu off her feet. The momentum of the movement was enough to give her the strength to send Etsu a few feet up into the air, but Emilie never let go of her hand - and within the blink of an eye Etsu would find herself on the girl's back.

"Hold on~" She singsonged, and before either of them knew it Emilie began to fling herself through the nooks of the trees as usual. She knew she wouldn't be able to catch up with the Rade if she had to drag the poor girl around on foot, and her knowledge of the forest and each little bend kept her moving at a breakneck speed. It was only slightly slower to flying - which she knew she couldn't do with another. Her wings were way too thin to carry more than one body around.

Emilie's lithe arms wrapped around tree branch after tree branch, feet barely touching the ground as she slid through the forest like a nuclear powered snake.

Then came the flash of purple.

"That little RAT!" She growled out, as she caught a glimpse of what was lying ahead of her. The flash of purple was gone, and Emilie had barely a second to stop herself from following in it's footsteps - down a rather steep rounded cliff. She wasn't about to bound down with the agility of a Rade, and falling didn't sound like too much fun either.

She skidded to a halt, finally sliding down onto her rear with a hard stop. Her feet dangled over the edge of the cliff, and she steeled herself for the brief moment that Etsu's body would impact against hers after the abrupt halt, before bending over slightly to take a look down.

"She did that on purpose.." Emilie whined, reaching underneath her and rubbing her sore bum.

Shock registered within the child's mind vaguely, her upturned eyes widening marginally as she was more or less flung onto Emilie's back. She fastened her arms around the girl's neck, pressing her masked face against the area where her neck met her shoulder. Was she mad?! They were surely going to die!

And yet, as Etsu peeled her face away from Emilie's back and looked up, she felt an excited thrill weave through her tiny frame. It didn't matter if the girl who carried her could hear her, because for that moment, the geisha didn't care whether she was heard or not. Her shoulders trembled, her head dipping back down.

She was laughing. And whether it was from hysteria or mirth, she had yet to find out. But if one could hear, it was truly a child's laughter, full and loud. The loudest she had ever allowed herself to laugh. The silent sound dwindled, leaving her gasping quietly, embarrassed by an outburst no one had heard.

Desu... She blushed.

Etsu yelped as her tiny body bumped into Emilie's, enough to rock but not to move; the girl was tiny, after all. Mumbling, she bent forward and looked after the winged-girl's, eyes round with curiosity. Looking back up at Emilie, her eyes became half moons as she smiled delightedly.

Whatever that had been, it had been fun!

Peeling her hands away from her shoulders, she pointed shakily over the cliff. Were they going down?

Emilie stared down at the treetops below. She could see some of them shaking and knew that the Rade below was on a hunt. For what, she could only guess.. but what she did know was that the Rade, as big as she was, was still a cub. She was an immature, irresponsible, childish cub.

A cub she was responsible for.

She groaned inwardly, turning around to check on the silent (at least to her) child behind her, making sure she didn't break anything important.

"Y'all right? At least we didn't fall down, I'm already gonna have to deal with one irate parent if I don't get that cub back.. don't wanna have to deal with two."

She chuckled nervously, giving the girl a half-assed grin. Something caught her attention, a movement that she saw out of the corner of her eye, and she turned to look at it.

"Aww, look.. a rabbit." She coo'd softly. It bounded away fearfully, looking weary and exhausted. "Poor thing, it's probably been running from something a.. ll.. ETSU DUCK!"

Emilie wrapped her arms around Etsu and pulled the girl down close to the ground, covering her protectively with her own body. She was just in the nick of time it seemed, as a large purple blur soared over their heads after having climbed back up the steep mountainside and leaping over them to continue it's chase. Only after she felt they were safe from the unintentional mauling, did she sit back up and let Etsu go.

"Well, at least I don't have to go down after her."
