In the anime Boogiepop Phantom, the small number of adults that are there are portrayed in a bad light. Here are some examples.

((Alot of the referance, and the idea, came from here.))

Examples:

Parents of Hisashi Jounochi:

They don't seem to notice or acknowledge Hisashi's dream of becoming a hero, something he wants desperately. His family gives him no idea of adulthood. (Does anyone seriously think 'hero' is a paying job? I suggest you pour cold water over your head if you do. Even if Hisashi hadn't had the tumor, it would be very unlikely for him to have a career as a professional athlete.)

At that, they did not establish a strong set of values within their son: he didn't give a second thought about eating people's memories, however bad they may be.

After his mother dies, all his father does is work and mourn, paying very little heed to his son.

The Mother of Shizue Wakasa:

Not only does Shizue's mother show a great disrespect for her dead husband, who Shizue is still greatly attached to, but her lack of guidance of her child shows her problems as a parent. She does not impart her daughter with knowledge that would make her "feel useful, necessary, or purposeful in the culture of her choice".

She simply single-mindedly provided for the two of them, failing in her role as a nurturer and educator. Shizue claims to "want to be a seed that can float without a care until you land and be an individual." This is because the lack of parental guidence left her without anything to root to.

The Parents of Mamoru and Sayoko Oikawa:

Mamoru and Sayoko's parents, especially their father, have nothing to give to their children in order for them to build lives to themselves. (Building amusement parks: Hot job? I think not.) The father even promised Mamoru to show up at his school play, but failed to do even that. Instead, he was working on Paisely Park, a project that went under and never finished. Mamoru never let go of that. That incident started his hate of all "useless" things, and sends him on his spree of destroying them. Later, Mamoru realized that he too is useless, because he can only destroy things, and cannot create. His parents did not impart them with any knowledge that would help him in modern society.

Aside from Mamoru's issue with his father, I do not beleive Mrs. Oikawa answered Sayoko when she asked if her mother knew where Mamoru was.

Discuss:

-Do you agree with this portrayal of parents?
-Any other examples
-Any parent in the Boogiepop universe who breaks this pattern and acts in a way that positively influences their child

Boogiepop and Boogiepop Phantom show the darker side of life since the creator has admitted he was "different."

Other bad parents?
Nagi's mom:
After her husband died she didn't even care if Nagi was traumatized or orphaned because of this. She just left Nagi, even when Nagi was hospitalized. She abandoned her own daughter.
Kotoe's parents:
Her mom let her Dad do whatever the hell he wanted. Her Dad treated most of his family like dirt unless they had money. Her parent's spoiled her. Her Dad hated Jin because Jin was his brother's son.
Jin's Dad:
Irresponsible with money, but he was a good parent though...

Touka's parent's aren't too bad, in one of the anime episodes they were worried that she might run away. In the first novel they were worried about the whole Boogiepop thing from years ago the kept her on a short leashe.

She seems to be on good relations with them, yes.

But they only told her 'she was possessed' when they found out about the appearance of Boogiepop. They left it this way, leaving their child in the dark.

It was for her own protection. They don't want to loose their daughter that way. So they do what most parents do...lie. No parent is perfect.

True, true. They seem like good parents in comparison to the rest of the parents of Boogiepop.

I understand them covering it up at the time, but even when Touka got older, they still kept it quiet.

Well they pay attention to their daughter and I don't blame them for keeping a secret still. Boogiepop knocked Touka's mom out cold. Besides they don't want to freak her out while she's still in school, she's almost going to collage! What parent would tell their child something freaky that'll add more stress to their life while they're taking a collage exam. I know my parent's wouldn't...until I was done with school. Her parents think Boogiepop is gone, but they're still keeping a close eye on her...for her safety.

Well, look at Manaka. Her mom lost her memory the day after she was born, and so she was carted off to the hospital. And her grandmother treated her badly because of the butterflies. Yet, Manaka treated her nicely when the old coot died. By putting plants in her eyes and mouth. (That made me laugh. One of the few comic relief points in Boogiepop.) When she turned into light, she visited her mom one last time. She remembered her, then Manaka left. The next day, she didn't know she had Manaka.

Well, that's my point from watching that episode only once. Thank you Allie for explaining it to me!

Yeah. The sad thing was that Mayumi was planning to be such a good mother, taking the responsibility of a fatherless child without complaining. And then, once she had Manaka... she forgot.

Yoji's parents were also pretty screwed up.

His father insisted on calling him stupid, and didn't allow him to follow his dream of going to a computer graphics school. They allowed him to lock himself in his room with that dating sim... and we know the rest.

(I swear never to do drugs!)
