So I've been having some issues with a volunteer at my work. He'd keep kissing my neck, he'd keep trying to kiss me, making reasons to touch me, and he's pinched my butt several times. Overall, invading my personal space and making me feel trapped and uncomfortable. Ordinarily, I'm a flirt myself... but it was at work and it made me feel uber akward and I let the guy know it. But he didn't stop.
I ended up telling my boss since it was at work and then he told two of my supervisors. Everyone has been pretty good about it saying that all I have to do is tell me if he does it again and they'll get rid of him.
It's been weighing on my mind a lot though.
So for discussion: Was telling my boss overreacting? Should I have said something when it all first started instead of waiting a few weeks to see if I could fix it myself? Has anyone else been harrassed at work? What would you do if it happened to you? Sexual harrassment in the workplace in general

It seems like people majorly over react about fake sexual harrasment and do nothing about real sexual harrassment.

I applaud your boss for taking it seriously instead of blowing it off. I doubt that guy would have stopped if you just waited a few weeks to say something. That's what they're banking on, you know? Good choice, I think.

you did good. you shouldn't let people like that get in the way of you doing your job. he should have just gotten the hint & stopped when you first told him.
better be safe than sorry.

Eat Macaque It seems like people majorly over react about fake sexual harrasment and do nothing about real sexual harrassment. What you deem as fake sexual harassment? What the difference between what you call real and fake?

What the difference between what you call real and fake? What that you say that guy did was completely unreasonable. He should have been fired. I've seen people get written up at for sexual harrassment just for jokingly saying "I want some of THAT," and being complained about by someone who they weren't even talking to or about.

I don't have that problem seein as I'm a guy, but you did the right thing by telling your boss and supervisors. And, A Clockwork Mind is right by saying that if you would have waited a few weeks, they would have prolly done nothing because you would have let it go on for so long.

What a nasty pervert! I agree w/ Eat Macaque; it seems like people tend to get fired for one-off jokey comments more than they do for really blatant sexual harrassment. Probably because the people who are harrassed more expicitly are often too embarrassed to report it. I've been harrassed at school before. It was actually by an IB art examiner who randomly started talking about maids in porn & asking me if I were into that kind of stuff while shifting closer & closer to me. O_O (they question you 1 on 1 in a classroom) I didn't report him, but I was really freaked. (especially since my artwork had nothing to do with porn or maids & he was doing the kind of joking but serious thing) I ended up just walking out of my exam & getting a crappy score (probably because he didn't rolleyes ).

PRODlGY I'd punch him in the face. redface Yeah, are you kidding me? If it was me, I'd warn him, then punch his face in... You were definitely not overreacting, thats just silly to think so. I'd probably regret punching him in the face because he might charge me with assault, so what you did was totally the right thing. I'm glad your boss got your back on this, I'm pretty sure most of us here know that you did the right thing.

Wow, I don't think I ever imagined such a strong support for what I did. I often felt after that I was overreacting and whatnot, but knowing that most others would also have such a negative reaction is reassuring.
