Mangaka: Morinaga Milk
...Kisses, sighs, and cherry-blossom pink---the material of love

User Image

When I became a fan of Morinaga Milk's work, it was quite by accident. I hadn't paid attention to the mangaka's name beyond noting that she was either a popular or fairly prolific artist, since I did recognize the pseudonym.

Well, it appears that she is both--prolific and popular, that is. Morinaga Milk has produced a number of yuri works, from light shoujo-ai to hard yuri (and not-so-yuri). However, she is particularly well known among the yuri fandom for her many girl-love works, some of which are (in my opinion) of excellent quality.

Among my favorites is a collection of sweet shoujo-ai stories collected in the tankoubon Kisses, Sighs, and Cherry-Blossom Pink, scanslated by Lililicious. Morinaga Milk's works are often published in the yuri magazine Yuri Hime, successor of magazine Yuri Shimai (which she was also published in).

I don't currently have a full list of her work, but I'm creating a list of what I know of below.

Morinaga Milk
    Kisses, Sighs, and Cherry-Blossom Pink
01 Even If We're Not Friends*
02 The Summer Closest To Heaven
    03 A Kiss, Love, and a Prince
04 This Love From I Can't Remember When*
    05 Cherries For Your Lips*
06 If I Kiss Her Ring Finger*
    07 Real Love

    (* = personal favorites)
All shoujo-ai, sweet, and worksafe. One page or something of nudity, but it's inexplicit and not suggestive. It would be guild-safe.

Chocolate Kiss Kiss Third installation of the Hitomi and Nana stories (the first and second are "Even If We're Not Friends" and "If I Kiss Her Ring Finger", respectively). Focuses on Valentine's Day. Sweet like all of the above stories.
Wishing On The Moon Fourth and last(?) installation on Hitomi and Nana. Angst on the future, but very, very sweet (seriously, that is the word for Milk's works. And her pen name).
Girl Friends Light subtexty shoujo-ai, ongoing. Incredibly sweet.
Amai Kuchibiru Yuri, not worksafe, still sweet. Some het sex.
Mare Yuri bits, though they're not rare. Not worksafe, plenty of rape (by males, monsters). Magic, romance, porn, angst. Didn't read.
Million Kisses Sailor Moon Doujinshi. Haven't read yet.
Nikurashii Anata e Not worksafe. H-manga, lots of rape, some yuri. Didn't read much.
Wandafuru Odd. A shih-tsu with a human form(?) who has a doggie boyfriend (also with human form?) but who's also in love with her girl owner. Not worksafe, haven't read it.

Some of her stories are...interesting, to say the least, but my favorites have been some of her short schoolgirl-type shoujo-ai, many of which are collected in the first tankoubon listed above. These tend to be gentle, romantic, cute, and include a touch of realistic takes on girls, crushes, and such emotions. They're often very short, kind of vignettes, but the works in the tankoubon mentioned above are interconnected in subtle ways--you'll see characters you recognize from other pieces.

So, who else has read her work? Do you have a favorite story, series, or pairing? Why do you like this or these in particular? Morinaga covers a wide range of genres in her works--which types are your particular favorites?

The cover image of A Kiss, Love, and a Prince--a second example of Morinaga Milk's artwork.

I need to check out more of her works. As for Kisses, sighs, and cherry-blossom pink, I loved it. I liked the ghost story as my favorite so far.

I'm afraid I can't direct you to anything, as it is against both guild and Gaian policy. You can, however, run searches on them. I provided enough information that it should be easy enough to find and purchase the manga.

There's a new serialization out by Morinaga Milk, and it is quite possibly one of the cutest things I've ever seen. The manga is called "Girl Friends" and is running in the magazine Comic High.

For more information, check out the thread I'm making for it here in the Pocky Shop.

Apparently, Morinaga Milk has stopped drawing for Yuri Hime at the moment. Hopefully she'll pick up with it again sometime in the future, but it looks like she'll still be drawing shoujo-ai and yuri stuff ("Girl Friends" is running in Comic High right now).

Erm...let's see...I don't know if I forgot anything else. I think that's it for Milk right now, I'm just watching for releases and scanslations of "Girl Friends".

Oh! "Girl Friends" is going to be released more frequently, if I remember correctly.

I was gonna post all this in the news thread, but I'm relying only on my memory just now so I can't verify all this at the moment. :[

But uh have an illustration from "If I Kiss Her Ring Finger" :]

I've been seeing Morinaga Milk in LJ's daily-yuri community. For some reason, I'd always thought it was the name of a series, as opposed to the artist herself. ^^;;

That said, Girl Friends is hella cute. heart

I dunno, some of Milk's stories didn't end the way I had hoped. I do like the Hitomi and Nana series, "A Kiss, Love, and a Prince", and "Cherries For Your Lips", but others, like "Million Kisses"...meh, that's just my personal taste, though.

Also, isn't "Morinaga Milk" a Japanese dairy company that manufactures Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, or something? Odd pen name for the woman.

Yes, it is a dairy company of sorts. It's not known to me as a mac and cheese company, actually, but a producer of milk candy--sweets. So, because I remember eating Morinaga Milk candy when I was a kid, I totally made the association of sugar-sweet (and her manga certainly matches) and I never thought her pen name was weird at all.

Wikipedia currently says:

Quote:
...a milk products and sweets company...Their products include milk products, drinks, candy, and confectioneries. Morinaga has distribution agreements with Kraft Foods. It is an affiliate company of Morinaga & Company.

And Morinaga & Company is a candy and confectionery company, so.

I have heard that fans who've actually seen Milk describe her as a cute and fashionable type of girl, pretty much the same way Hayashiya Shizuru is described. This certainly explains why there's a good amount of fashion and all in both their current series (Girl Friends and Strawberry Shake Sweet, respectively), as they seem to have the backgrounds and familiarity with style and girl trends to write that.

Some of her stories could have ended on a happier note and didn't quite go with what I'd been hoping, but that doesn't mean I don't like her as an author anyway. I don't think she ends them badly, and she might pick up some of those stories and characters again, so the series might continue if we're lucky. But for the moment, there is Girl Friends, which seems to be shaping up cheerfully for the yuri-loving community.

No, no, I didn't say I didn't like her, that's not what I meant. I just said a few of her works I didn't like too much, but everyone has those moments, even Steven Spielberg (remember "War of the Worlds"?) Honestly, Morinaga is great at what she does. She is really, really, really good. ^^

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to imply that interpretation at all! No, I didn't think you disliked her or anything, it was my bad for the wording.

There were definitely a few I liked a little less also, haha, but I just read those less. =P Like, two of her stories? But then again, when i reread most of her stories I just love them, so maybe not...

I think since Girl Friends is going monthly now she probably won't be doing any other projects, so we probably won't see anything else from her but that for a while. Fortunately, Girl Friends is totally moving in a direction I like, so.
