Miku Matsuo was hanging out in her room with her best friend, Kaede Kokubunji. They had gone through a lot together, and were very close. Yet, Miku had an obsession with shoujo manga, and wished, more than anything, to have an adventure of her own, with the basics of a shoujo manga plot: gets a lover, travels around to different places or worlds, has a variety of friends, people admire her or even have feelings for her, etc. Kaede knew that Miku wanted nothing other than to have such an adventure, and would give up just about anything to have it. So, after the two girls had spent about an hour hanging out together at Miku's house, they went to her room to chat. That was when Kaede brought it up.
"Miku-chan, do you want to see other worlds?"
Miku was surprised to hear such a question, and thought Kaede was just playing around with her, like usual. But her friend was clearly serious... and did her eyes also show sadness? "You know me, Kaede-chan! I've always wanted to go on an adventure like no one else here's EVER had before!!" Miku smiled widely at Kaede, hoping it would make the sorrow go away.
Although Kaede smiled, her eyes still betrayed that downtrodden emotion. "Then there's someone you need to talk to. She will grant your wish."
Miku was stunned. Since when did Kaede...? "What are you talking about, Kaede-chan? Please don't be making stuff up, it's depressing..."
"I'm not. But, before I send you, I want you to promise me something..." Kaede reached forward and grasped her dear friend's hands tightly, but as lovingly as any friend would if she were parting from one close to her. "This woman I'm sending you to will ask a price of you. No matter what it is, I want you to give it up so you can go on your journey. All right?"
After blinking in surprise and stunned silence a few times, Miku smiled awkwardly at Kaede. "Kaede-chan, please stop messing around."
"Promise me."
Miku fell silent. Kaede had moved closer to her, and looked desperate, but like she would burst into tears at any moment. The green-haired girl smiled at her best friend, reassuring her. "Okay, I promise. You know I'd give just about anything up, anyway. Plus, you're my best friend! Why wouldn't I make such a simple promise to you?"
The answer both seemed to make Kaede overjoyed and yet kill her. She smiled brightly nonetheless. "Then it's time, Miku-chan." She released Miku's hands and placed them on the girl's shoulders. A bright glow sprang to life almost instantly, conforming to Miku's outline. "Her name is Yuuko-san. She will grant that wish for you, Miku-chan. Remember the promise you made to me, and keep it. Please..." Kaede smiled again, but as the light started to blot the meek girl out, Miku could see her crying as she smiled.
"K- Kaede-chan! Why are you crying?" Miku called out, reaching for her, but the light enveloped her and she vanished without a trace.
Kaede's hands dropped to her side and she gasped for air. "That took... everything I have..." Tears still fell, but when she had caught enough of her breath back, she smiled sadly. "I'm sorry, Miku-chan. What you'll have to give up will devastate you, but I want you to go. I want nothing more... than to see you happy. Even if I can't really see you..." Kaede collapsed on the floor, the tears delaying as she slept.
