Forest of Angels Chapter 8: Fear, Dancing With Death Section 11
Fuming, Tsano stepped outside, followed closely by Kiko and Tao Chi, onto a few stone steps, miscalculated on the number of stairs there were, and walked ankle deep in snow. Looking up, he saw what they meant. Tsano could finally see the sky, real light, and the sun after what seemed like months, only it was merely days. The large, closely-knit black forests were gone; to be replaced by the traditional bare, naked trees, the occasional few with pure white leaves and bark as far as you could see. Tsano could not see the grass, as white, sparkling snow was all around, making Kiko’s house look like an iced gingerbread house. The snow was soft looking and smooth, like a marshmallow. There were purple, snow-capped mountains in the distance with mist floating all about them, only partially covering them from view and giving them a strong, majestic feel. A frozen lake was just on the horizon, perhaps half a mile away. “Wow.” Tsano said simply. “I guess this was what you meant.” “Oh, Tsano, I forgot to tell you.” Said Kiko’s voice in the distance, sounding amused. He craned his neck to see her. “Those cuts Vincent gave you on your shoulders, they might be scars for a little while, since they were pretty deep.” Tsano merely shrugged. That was all right by him, he was alive, and he’d finally made it here. He pulled himself out of the snow, shaking the rest of it out of his clothes, and stood beside them. “How did you, or should I say, your mother, manage to hide all of this from the rest of the world?” “By this, I suppose you mean Labrynuu?” “Yeah.” Kiko looked wistfully out at a few people (Tsano guessed them to be a few of the people she looked after) having a snowball fight. “Well, I suppose Vincent’s already told you, but we make sure no one gets in unless we’re sure they won’t leave.” “…That must be difficult.” He commented. She laughed shortly. “Not really.” He looked again outwards toward a tree that was slightly far away where he noticed Vincent, Reddo, and a girl with black hair he didn’t know were sitting, talking under the leaves of a big oak. The girl didn’t seem very active. “Who is she?” Tsano asked after a pause as he stared at them. “The girl’s name is Mint.” Tao Chi told him, stepping up beside him, a sudden touch of concern in her voice. “She’s really nice, but she doesn’t talk much.” “They’re a few of my wards.” Kiko replied. “Vincent, a Vampire, Reddo, a young Werewolf, and Mint, an Anthro.” “Anthro?” “It means she’s half something and half another thing.” Tao Chi murmured, as if it were an offensive secret. “She’s, um, half-cat half-Human.” “…Wow.” He said again, looking politely confused. “I’ve never heard of such a thing.” “Well, you wouldn’t, would you?” Kiko sighed, and looked at the sky. “They’re kind of, um, artificially made.” She said carefully. Now beginning to feel very stupid, he asked, “And what does that mean?” “Well…” Both Tao Chi and Tsano turned to look at her, and, by the look on her face, he noticed that Tao Chi hadn’t been told this either. “In Yokale, they do some funny experiments. You know where Yokale is, right?”
