Thirty eight hours into the Legend of Dragoon, I have finally done what I could not do several years ago when I first owned this game. I beat it. It really brought back the love I had for Roleplaying Games, and Video Games in general.
Now a days, you see all these games on the market. Some are good, sure. But aside from a select few, its hard to find those games that really make you stop and admire the work you've done when you finally set that game down after a grueling play session to get through that final boss, or final series of bosses. [Legend of Dragoon has three final bosses, the last of which has four forms. It can be tough.]
I was just posting that I beat it, but then I realized there was so much more. After I beat Legend of Dragoon, I really appreciated the work that I had done playing it. I couldn't figure it out. Was it the scenes showing what happened to everyone afterward? The beautiful music of love playing during the end credits? [By the way, its my favorite song now. Just gotta find the name of it.] And then it hit me.
Legend of Dragoon is one of those games that gets you so entwined into the storyline. Its not one of those same old storylines. The same brings everything new to the table, and lets you experience every morsel of it. It has so many nooks and crannies to explore, so much depth to let you be involved in. The first time I played through I stopped at the boss, I wasn't so interested in finally doing that battle. The second time through, I was so excited to face the final boss. I was minorly upset that I couldn't play through more storyline. Regardless, it was a real joy. Going back through this time, fighting with Faust and the four lingering in death Dragoon Spirits. It really made me glad that I could play this game again. [The fact that I could is all thanks to my girlfriend, who found this online and ordered for a gift. God, I love her so much. She spoils me, she really does. <3]
Even so, i'm getting to the point.
I ask the people reading to think back to the olden days. The days of the playstation. When graphics weren't the best, and there was no such thing as light bloom yet. Movie sequences could be beautiful, yes. And yet the actual gameplay graphics were mere blocks. Why did we play games back then? Was it because we loved what we thought was great graphics? Or did we simply adore something we could play and enjoy? My answer? The stroies, the originality.
I feel like these days, games aren't so good as olden days. Again with very few exceptions, there aren't many games where you play for the story. Not for the gameplay. Not for the graphics. So this is what i'm saying in this journel entry. For all of you that are playing your next generation games, but aren't getting the real kick you used too. Maybe you've succumb to it too. Succumb to the 'look' of games, not so much the actual depth anymore. Pick up your favorite old Playstation game, XBox game. Maybe even your old Dreamcast and Nintendo games. Pick your favorite old game and give it a run. See if it doesn't make you experience a certain blissfull feel. If not, well then maybe enjoying a game for being that game isn't right for you. Even so, that's all for this post. Keep you updated with my next post. It might be tomorrow, unlikely though. Odds are, it'll be on Sunday or Monday.
