Lightbulb Phenomena
The reflection pool quietly displays the image of the mind, only disturbed by the ripples of an epiphany.
“You can turn the light on and show me the real me.” -Jack's Mannequin

The computer hummed on hesitantly under her touch. There was a sigh of relief; her shoulders rose and fell, slightly, as if her body was not able to support the pressure of a larger gesture. She looked like she had been tumultuously made into a slight figure. A whir, then a beep, indicated the computer was fully booted, and she delicately moved her hand over the mouse and keyboard, as if the machinery were her only lifeline—more important than food, water, or breath. Pausing again, as if she had forgotten something that should have been habit, she leaned over the monitor and switched the room light off. Only the artificial glow of the monitor was left as she sat down and began a letter.

Dear Internet,
I hope you are well.

I am not well. I have not been well since we last departed a few nights ago. Every moment without you is a moment of thought devoted to nothing else. I crave your lively conversations and glitchy quirks; even those sounds you so often make are a constant reminder in the back of my consciousness. I can not stop myself from thinking of your harmonious music and your vulgar noise.

This has been a test for me, this separation. It has tested my will, my patience for others, and I have found, no matter how hard I try, I can not tear myself away from you. You are my addiction, a drug that I can not stop taking. Even as my moral spirit withers under the knowledge of this sin, I can not stop using you. I can not stop using you as you have used me, my body, my soul, my heart, so carelessly. Who can I blame for all this, when I can not blame you? The fault is all my own. The degeneration of my relationship with friends, family, and society—because I can not stop going to you.

Internet, I am infatuated with you.

Always yours,
F.S.

Finished, exhausted, she saved and closed the document. Then, she booted down the computer, waiting for her room to be smothered with darkness, before flicking the switch on and sweeping her room with light.
