It was dark when the pair returned to the blond president's apartment. Rufus was stumbling around and Kadaj stayed by his side as his crutch. The effects of the Trance were beginning to wear down and he no longer was feeling the mind numbing bliss and euphoria the drug provided. However, the indolence and inhibition remained for the time being, his lethargy increased from the recent party.
Kadaj flipped the lights on and Rufus' eyes blinked and squinted from the sudden light. Everything seemed brighter with his pupils dilated.
"... I smell like burnt bananas..." The silver haired one chuckled at the blonde's words.
"We both do. Come on." Kadaj brought them both to the bathroom to clean up. Rufus would need help, but did not complain in the least as the remnant tended to him. Opting to shut his eyes and indulge in the feeling of the fingers running through his hair as the water cascaded over his skin.
Once clean and dry the pair stumbled over their feet to the bedroom. Rufus was increasingly becoming dead weight and being difficult to move. He met the bed and was ready to curl up under the covers to slip into blissful slumber. For however long he could.
"Hey wait. You gotta get dressed." There was a hand that took hold of him and brought him back to the edge of the bed to sit in a slouched position with his head hung. "Not like anyone would complain if you didn't..." A chuckle followed.
Eyes still shut, Rufus didn't see the smile directed at him. Instead he gave a soft hum as fingers lightly brushed back soft blond locks of hair from his face. "Hmmm, no wakey huh? Fine fine, I'll do all the work. Ya big baby."
Rufus felt the soft, silken fabric of his pajamas sliding over his skin as he was dressed. Once clothed he gave a low hum and fell back on the bed. His mind numb and yet buzzing, yearning for slumber.
This time he was allowed to travel the spacious bed to a comfortable location. Soon after he felt the mattress shift with the movement of a new weight that settled next to him. A pair of strong arms wrapped around him and drew him into a warm embrace. He accepted it and snuggled into the warmth as much as was allowed, his face buried into the curve of one silver haired man's neck.
It was as though he regained his sense of blissful euphoria in this moment of calm and comfort. A smile etched on his features and a pleasant hum escaping him.
A soft half-whisper graced his ear. "You were great, you know. She's sure to be happy for it."
"Mhmm..." He'd hate to admit it later, but it was fun. Even if it was more or less Yuffie's gift to Minx. Yuffie so owed him for this. Especially after she and Reno stuck a needle in his rump and gave him this drug...
How they got it he didn't quite understand. Trance was a rich-boy's drug after all. Few could afford it.
A soft sigh passed his lips and he slipped into the quiet dark of slumber. He would enjoy it while it lasted.
However, fate was not kind. As it usually was to Rufus Shinra.
Not long after he was asleep the effects of the drug began wearing off. He succumbed to the side effects, his rough trip only just starting.
The president's body began to shake and he felt chills crawl over his skin and up his spine. He felt the flash of cold in his very bones and shivered. A cold sweat formed on his brow and his heart pounded in his chest.
Blue eyes flew open and wide with sudden terror and he gasped, the air drawn sharply into his lungs such that it was almost painful.
"Rufus?" Kadaj had been awake, keeping an eye on the sleeping blond until he had jarred awake.
Rufus shook in the other's embrace and pushed away, looking around frantically. "Wh-where am I?"
"You're in your apartment. In your own bed." Kadaj's brow furrowed, a look of worry in his eyes. "What's wrong?"
His body was shaking, the anxiety built up inside and he was wired. He began pulling away, his gaze flying in so many directions. Terror. He was afraid, and he didn't know why.
"Rufus??" Gentle hands reached out for him. "It's okay! There's nothing to be afraid of!"
Rufus gave a startled cry and sat up, crawling back away from him. "Do-don't touch me...!"
Kadaj sat up, a look of hurt flashed across his features. "Rufus, I'm not going to hurt you. It's okay. There's nothing to be afraid of."
A strangled whimper sounded in the blond's throat and the wide, blue eyes searched for the danger that didn't exist in that room.
A hand lightly touched his cheek and he nearly flinched. Soft words of encouragement whispered to him. "It's okay. You're safe. I'm here."
Safe, he didn't feel safe. He felt wrong. He could hear his speeding pulse in his ears and his fingers wouldn't stop twitching, grasping at the sheets.
But Kadaj... Kadaj was here. Kadaj said he would take care of him. Yes, he would be safe with him right? Right?
Trembling fingers grasped for the strong, bare arms that were offered to him and he drew close to the remnant, feeling the warmth and protectiveness of the embrace.
Cold sweat trickled over his skin and he shivered again. The rush was too much for the young president. He clung to the body that held him as though it would suddenly evaporate and fade into nothing. Leaving him alone and vulnerable. Exposed to the harsh world that judged him and wished for his death. The world he was never good enough for.
A knot formed in his throat and he choked on it, burying his face in the puppet once more. He gripped at his shirt and his chest ached. He gasped from the pain and shuddered. It felt as though he were being stabbed in the heart with a blade made from ice.
The arms around him tightened. "It's okay. It's okay... You're safe."
Safe... safe... How he wished to believe that. If he were safe, why, why was he feeling so much terror? Why did he ache like this? He whimpered once more as Kadaj stroked his hair, trying anything to calm the strung out blond man in his arms.
After some coaxing Kadaj managed to calm Rufus enough to lie with him once more.
Rufus' muscles spasmed and he shook violently for a moment and gasped. Hands gripped the black cloth of Kadaj's sleeveless night shirt so tight the knuckles were paper white.
It would be another several hours before Rufus would calm. The tremors would quell and the shaking would cease. His heart would slow and the sharp aching would fade. Panting and locks of spun gold wet and matted to his forehead from the cold sweat. He shivered once more with his eyes shut tight. The trip had been intense, and tears had more than once threatened to spill from the corners of his eyes.
Exhausted and thoroughly spent, the young President of ShinRa lost himself in the darkness of sleep. Still surrounded in the warm embrace and safety that had been promised.
