The air smelt of a mix of orange blossoms in bloom and rain as Mindy stepped quickly out the front door of her two story house, set in the Hamon District a rather wealthier part of town. Pulling her long, flaxin hair back into a quick ponytail she managed to grab her bag and slip on her shoes simultaniously as she made a mad dash down the drive to the awaiting motorcyle.
"Sorry it took so long Daniel. My dad decided to miss place his work presentation and we had to spend the majority of the morning searching for it," mumbled Mindy as she grabbed the spair white helmet Daniel handed to her as she smoved down her shirt and slid her leg over the bike, positioning her arms securly around Daniel's waist.
"So did you guys find it,"questioned Daniel, laughter in his voice.
"You could say that,"smiled Mindy.
"Oh really!"
"Yah. About five minutes ago we got a call reminding my dad he had dropped off the presentation the night before so we wouldnt have to do the vary thing we were doing,"laughed Mindy, sarcasim tinging every word as she shook her head at her dads ability to be so absent minded.
"What would that man do without you,"questioned Daniel as his foot hit the gas as soon as he felt Mindy's arms wrap tightly around his torso. The bike came to life under them and moved down the road at a leisurely pace, the trees different shades of orange and summer set red as fall began to take over.
"Work less,"frowned Mindy as she muttered the words only loud enough for her own ears.
"What'd you say,"asked Daniel as Mindy's words were swallowed up by the sound of the wind wipping against them and brushing lightly at their clothing.
"Just that he'd probably forget to wear pants out in public,"laughed Mindy trying to regain her pleasent demeanor, not wanting to think upon the past and what it had brought.
Daniel laughed politely as their chatter died down and both occupants of the bike remained silent watching the world pass by them until a large brick building came into clear sight, the words "Cawston Highschool" scrawled acroos the entrance way.
It was the same as any other highschool. A large brick building encompsed mostly by pavement or grass and the children milling about it. Large windows looked out from the building allowing students minds to slip away during class. The entrance was set under an arch in the building shielding waiting students from downpours on the day that it rained. Two adjoined double doors a shade of deep blue like that of playground equipment lead into the building and its many hallways one after the other leading into numerous classrooms.
Daniel slowly eased the bike into the schools tightly packed parking lot as he turned down the aisle slowly trying to find an adequate place to park. Kicking up the speed a notch Daniel slammed his foot on the gas rocketing them into a newly opened parking spot and managing to cut of a green ford truck in the process. The occupants of the truck growled menacingly at them and blared their horn before continueing on to find another place to park.
"I never get tired of all our fabulous near death experiences,"said Mindy with fake cheer in her voice as she slid of the still running bike and punched Daniel in the arm hard enough to make him wince before continuing to laugh.
"Daniel,"came a high, sweet, femine voice as Kyrie rushed from behind a large parked SUV that moments ago had hidden her from sight.
Mindy watched as Kyrie rushed Daniel and threw her arms around his neck preventing him from unseating himself from the bike. Daniel quickly removed his helmet to reveal his shaggy oak brown hair that fell charmingly into his face. Within seconds of his helmet being removed Kyrie's lips were plastered to his for dear life.
Mindy couldnt help but laugh at the sight infront of her. Daniels sharp, intimidating peircings that ran up his ear, his lips ring, his dark jeans and his leather jacket intermingled with Kyries white shirt, blood red skirt decorated with random chains, and her wild pink and platinum blonde hair till they almost looked like one being. They were poster children for teenage rebellion and they fit so perfectly together like two puzzle pieces that so obviously connect.
"Ladies and gentleman, although I hate to have to break up this love fest we do have to attend class eventually,"laughed Mindy a safe distance back from the couple her arms folded over her chest as she wagged her finger at them like teachers used to when she was a child.
"Dont be jealous. There's enough love for you too,"cooed Kyrie as she and Daniel encircled Mindy in a hug she could not escape.
After releasing her the trio looked up at the sound of the late bell wringing loud and clear over the nearly empty parking lot only a few souls still milling about.
"Oh hell we have Mr.Wilkins first period,"growled Daniel as he took a swing at the ground his foot dislodging loose dirt and pavement as it skittered infront of him.
"We'll see you at lunch Mind,"smiled Kyrie as she grabbed Daniel's hand and rushed him toward the school doors trying to prevent being even more late then they already were.
Shifting the back pack on her back Mindy made her way into the school and toward her first period class. Art. Mindy entered the nearly deserted class and threw her back pack aside by the door by the other discarded bags. Reaching behind her head Mindy tightened her hair in its ponytail as she made her way to the corner of the room and grabbed herself a smock. They were to carry on with there lst semester painting worth around sixty percent of their grade, to be turned in at the semester final. There werent many restrictions inside the classroom or on assignments other then orginality in your work and respect for others.
Grabbing her paints and various brushes Mindy made her way over to her easel she watched her classmates frantic strokes or smove lines drawn with determined hands as she reached her easel and placed down her tools. Mindy looked up to survey the blank white infront of her. Unlike her peers she had yet to find a suitable subject matter to paint.
Mindy sat there silently wrapped up in her own thoughts as she tried to find the inspiration she needed to fill in the white. The minutes passed away quickly until the bell rang once more signaling them to make their ways to their next classrooms. Mindy watched as everyone disposed of their smocks and and grabbed their bags and were ushered out of the room by Mrs.Dubvoe. The familiar smell of paint was comforting in a strange way and Mindy was in no hurry to leave it.
"Mindy-anna could I speak to you for a moment,"requested Mrs.Dubvoe as she made her way back to her desk that was hidden mostly under art work and various instruments. Mrs.Dubvoe was the only teacher who ever used her full first name.
"Yes Mrs.Dubvoe,"questioned Mindy interested in what her teacher had to inform her of as she finished putting away her things and scooped up her bag.
"Mindy your an extremely talented artist and a wonderful student but im a little worried about your semester final project. We started a week and a half ago and im yet to see an productivity. Your have an amazing talent for art and I was hoping to enter this piece into the winter festival so if you need any help remeber im here. Alright,"encourged Mrs.Dubvoe as she tried to persuade her to make a spectacular effort. Mindy listened intently to Mrs.Dubvoe's almost frantic sounding words.
"Yes Mrs.Dubvoe i'll remember,"replied Mindy with a smile as she turned about and made her way to the door and waited to hear it close shut behind her before she let the smile slip from her face. Art was one the few things she could ever do right and here she was disapointing the one teacher who truly thought she had some promise.
The day passed slowly by. English 12. Writing. Drama 3. Physical Education. History. Lunch was no comfort as Mindy made her way to their usual spot under the large oak tree that sat in the front of the school a perfect view of it from her art class every morning.
Daniel and Kyrie were wrapped up in one another as usual, which was most of the time rather hilarious but in the mood she was in today was just tiring. Daniel had befriended Mindy the day she had arrived at Cawston Highschool last year. Her father had sent her to a high ranking private school up unto juinor year when he found out that she wasnt interested in core classes so much as extra curiculars. This had sent her father on the war path so to say since he did not approve of the arts but believed that subjects such as english, math, and science were the foundations for a good future. He had decided if Mindy was going to be frivilous she would not do it on his expences and sent her to Cawston for her entire junior year. Even still she remained there as she was soon to gradute a senior this coming year.
Unfortunetly Daniel was usually tied up with Kyrie and the other individuals Daniel hung out with were not huge fans of Mindy. Early on they had found out her fathers well paying job and her quaint living arrangements and were suddenly less willing to be inviting. They werent so much out right rude but they managed yo make known their hidden bitterness.
Lunch passed slower then usual as Daniel and Kyrie remained oblivious to the fact that Mindy was a little less then welcome amoungst the ranks. The bell signaled the end of lunch far to late for Mindys liking and she made her way to her last two classses before she could trudge out of the school once more.
As the final bell signaled the end of school Mindy trudged out the schools double doors her head down, focused on the ground beneath her. Looking out over the parking lot Mindy spotted Kyrie and Daniel waving at a distance from Kyrie's beaten down old Mustang. Picking up her step Mindy made her way down the stairs toward her awaiting friends a frown forming on her face as she realized the absence of Daniels helmet.
The down pour of rain worsened as Mindy dashed across the parking lot toward the Mustang.
"The rains to bad to ride the bike. So Kyrie offered to give me a ride home,"growled Daniel obviously unhappy at the fact that he would have to accept a ride from his girlfriend and leave his precious bike behind.
"Dont worry theres room in the back,"smiled Kyrie her arms wrapped around Daniel as she gave Mindy a reasuring smile.
"No I think i'll walk today,"smiled Mindy not overly eager to be stuck in a over heated car right at the moment. She had to figure out why she was stuck. Why she couldnt for the life of her think of something to paint. Every once and a while it was nice to be alone and think about the things she tried to run from daily.
"Are you crazy. Your going to freeze its pouring down rain,"scolded Daniel as he reached out to grasp Mindy's wrist preventing her from proceeding home in the rain as he grasped his jacket over his and Kyrie's head with the other.
Spinning out of Daniels reach with a smile on her face Mindy looked them both earnestly in the eyes."Its only like a mile and a half at the most,"laughed Mindy with a wave of her hand dismissing their concerns. With that Mindy skipped through the now oversized puddles of rain water as she turned quickly to wave then headed toward home.
"Your out of your mind. You better call us when you get home or were sending the cops out looking for your sad butt,"yelled Daniel after her in his controling older sibling like manner.
As soon as she was out of eye range of the two Mindy rapidly slowed her pace, almost to a halt as she continued toward home, a look of dismay over coming her face. Fingering the prism around her neck Mindy let a small sob shudder through her as she let her tears mix with the falling rain.
She was turning into her mother more and more every day. She couldnt make decisions without having to think about it for forever. What worried her most was the fact that her headaches were getting gradually worse just like her mother had before....
Shaking her head Mindy tried to clear away the haunting thoughts of her simalarity to her mother as she quickened her pace toward home to perhaps be able to have dinner with her father before he had to rush off as usual.
Bounding up the front steps Mindy opened the door to the sight of her father frantically packing his bags, a large cellular phone plastered to his ear. "Yes,yes Duke she just got here. I'll be on my way any minute. I'll call when im close,"her father mumured urgently as he continued tossing items of clothing and such into his wide open suitcase before tossing down the phone onto the couch.
"Duke just called,"replied her father to Mindy's unamused look.
"I can tell,"Mindy almost growled at the thought of the next obvious words that were about to leave her fathers mouth. When Duke called it only ment one thing.
"They need me to fly out to Florida for a short while, just till the plan goes through for work. You understand right sweetie,"smiled her father hopefully as he ruffled Mindy's hair never once daring to look her in the eyes.
"Yah I understand alright,"frowned Mindy noticeably.
"I knew you would. It should take a week at the most im sure of it,"reasured her father as he pressed down the top of his leather suitcase as it gave a satisfactory click. Grabbing his bag tight in his hand, his knuckles gone white Mindy's father made a break for the door with one last,"Call if you need anything,"before rushing out the door letting it slam shut behind him.
"Some father you are,"shouted Mindy as she sent a swift kick at the door her now bare feet connecting harshly with the wood as she let out a soft whimper.
Tired and dissapointed Mindy made her way upstair leaving her soaked bag and shoes behind by the door. Finally reaching the second landing that should only take seven seconds but felt like three years of pure misery. Stumbling down the dark hallway she didn't bother to mess with turning on lights since she knew the way well enough and sluggishly made her way into the dark room and flipped the switch that illuminated the room.
The bathroom was a fair size with a large oval tub and two sinks with a towering mirror that reflected most all of the bathroom. Shutting the door behind her Mindy began to meticulously undress letting her damp articles of clothing slide to the floor in a heep. Undressed Mindy glanced into the mirror taking in her reflection. She looked so much older then she was, and so bedraggled. Dark rings resided under her eyes and her soaken blonde hair clung to her face and neck. How could her father not have noticed the overcoming changes that had been taking place ever since her mothers death. God he was oblivious.
Rubbing at her eyes Mindy looked away from the mirror sickened by what she saw as another shooting pain echoed through her head. Trying to push the feeling out of her mind Mindy quickly stepped into the shower turning on the spicket to warm and letting the water pour out unbarebly hot. Turning it down slightly Mindy slipped under the spray of the water she let it run down her shivering body. The touch of each droplet felt like needles jabbed into her skin due to the frozen state she had been in moments ago. Slowly the stinging sensation ebbed away and all that was left was the satisfying feeling of the warmth of the water running over her pale skin forming rivlets and waterfalls with the contures of her body.
Lathering a mix of shampoo and conditioner into her fair hair Mindy let it sit as she took up a sponge lying by her feet and began to scrub away the residue on her skin. The texture of the sponge made her skin awaken under its touch and her mind to clear abit as her breath began to even. Breathing in the scents around her, a smile came to Mindy's lips as she smelt a combination of sandlewood and strawberrys enveloping her. Placing down the sponge in her hand Mindy leant her head under the still pounding spray and let the water work out the ingrediant in her hair till only plain water cascaded down her body.
Thourghly warmed by the shower Mindy reached forward turning off the spray and the water all together as she reached outside of the shower and grabbed a soft, crimson colored towel that she wrapped about her lithe body as she stepped from the confines of the shower out into the steemed bathroom, the windows completely fogged over. Making her way to the mirror Mindy pressed one finger to the actually cold glass and began to trace through the fog leaving behind a message, 'Art' before drawing her hand back to herself and making her way out of the bathroom turning off the light behind her.
Padding down the hallway the feeling of thick carpet beneath her pruned toes Mindy felt her muscles relax and move effortlessly as she pushed aside the third door down giving way to her scarcely decorated room. The smell of air freshener and paint hit her nostrils at the same time as she dug through her drawers fishing out a pair of snoopy boxers and blue tanktop. Quickly dragging her clothes on over her head Mindy gathered up her cell and slowly dialed Daniels number. After three consecutive rings she was sent to his voice mail and left a short message assuring Daniel she had made it home all right, there was really no need to further inform him that her father had abandoned her once more this month. It would only worry him.
Throwing down her cellphone onto the large marron bed centered in the middle of her room in frustration Mindy wandered out of her room down stairs and into the den quickly turning up the stereo, uncomfortable with the imense amount of silence. Manuvering the buttons she let her finger drag across play as the lyrics from Shiny Toy Guns, "Le Disko" filled the room. Content with the upbeat tempo Mindy turned the volume as high as would not alarm the neighbors and made her way into the kitchen to fend for herself as she often did.
Pulling down a packet of macaroni from the pantry and a stick of velvita cheese from the fridge Mindy proceeded to arrange dinner as she slid the noodles into the pot full of water waiting for it to come to a roling boil. As the water began to heat under the flame Mindy made her way to the front door to lock herself in for the night when a sudden darkness came over her and the house. A frightened squek escaped her lips as Mindy turned around to find her home plunged into darkness. Taking in a deep breath Mindy grasped at the door behind her finding the knob that gave way under her frantic fingers. Slipping out of the eerie house Mindy reached around the corner to find a flashlight they left on the porch incase of such emergencies. Mindy looked out upon the street to see that any illumination coming from her neighboring houses was due to dim T.V. sets playing within. Along with her electricity having disminshed so had the streetlamps gone out.
Heart pounding hard against her chest Mindy listened to the pounding noise of the still persistent rain bouncing of the slats on the roof. She was certain to get wet all over again having to go and in search of the circuit box. Inhailing deeply Mindy bounded quickly down the front steps and around the side of the house following the wall that lead to the shared breaker boxes between her house and the one adjacent to it. Her feet slid in the thick pooled mud causing her to slide and grasp the house for leverage. Releasing her support Mindy continued on taking more catious steps as her flashlight trained over the ground and wall as she continued searching for the circuit box. Taking another step Mindy's foot came down upon something sharp that dug into her flesh causing her to cry out in shock and pain as she tore her foot back and lost her balance sending herself carreening towards the wet ground. As Mindy's body connected with the ground a large splash of mud spewed upwards covering her legs and lower torso and soaking her to the bone. She glanced to see where her flashlight had landed in the fall and found its beam of light reflected on the power box. Standing awkwardly, relieving pressure on her injured foot Mindy slid open the lid and began to tamper with the switch to try and revive the power in her house, but to no avail.
"Damn it all," growled Mindy in fear and frustration as she slammed shut the breaker box in anger. She hated being alone in the dark and here she was soaked in mud, stuck in the pouring rain, with no hope of seeing any light till morning.
As she let her fingers run through her mud stained hair Mindy let out and exhausted sigh. A sudden pressure landed on her shoulders as she felt someones hands come from behind her and rest on her shoulders. In alarm Mindy hauled around a scream stuck in her throat as she took a swing at the sycho behind her connecting with his chest. She heard no reaction to her attack but the mans hands grasping hers and holding her still.
"Calm down. I didn't mean to scare you I simply heard a noise and I thought I'd come check it out. It turned out it was you so I thought I'd ask if you needed any help. But apparently you can take care of yourself," laughed the man that towered over her.
"Who are you," questioned Mindy untrustingly as she wrenched her wrists from the mans grasp.
"Im sorry, my names Ezekiel I moved in next door a few days ago. I suppose I never got a chance to introduce myself properly," Ezekiel laughed good naturedly.
"Sorry if I woke you up but the power in my house died and I came out here to try and get it started again but it refuses to listen to me," apalogized Mindy as her unease began to melt away.
"Its quite alright. How about you come on in and i'll give the electricity company a call for you," offered Ezekiel as he gestured toward his house the rain still pouring down in torrents soaking them both thourghly.
"Oh no it's alright I really don't want to impose on you," gently sighed Mindy as she turned from the lightened house and the kind stranger back toward her bleak house to await the next light she would see at the suns rise.
"I insist," laughed Ezekiel lightly as his strong, slender fingers hooked around Mindy's shivering arm turning her about as she let out a wince of pain her eyes screwing up tight against the shooting pain running through her foot.
"Are you hurt," questioned Ezekiel in a soft, warm voice that seemed to wrap around her body and draw her close to him.
"No I just stepped on something sharp," growled Mindy in irritation as she fought back the pain making her want to wrench away her foot from her body.
"Here," laughed Ezekiel tauntingly as he shifted Mindy's full weight onto his back water splash up against his knees, soaking through his jeans as he rose to his feet with Mindy clutching on for dear life.
"I'm perfectly fine to walk on my own. You can put me down now. The doors not even that far away," cried Mindy in protest next to Ezekiels frostbitten ears as she tried to dislodge herself from his back without jarring her injured foot.
"Listen with the pace your moving we'll both die of hypothremia so just sit still and hold on. Your making it ridiculously hard to carry you with you fidgeting about like that so stop it," humphed Ezekiel as he repositioned her on his back securely taking her arms about his neck and locking them there as he made his way toward the house. A beckon on a shadowed street.
Trodding up the steps Ezekiel lowered down Mindy placing her upon the floor briefly as he opened the door, a gust of warmth seeped from the house and played against both of their chilled faces as they welcomed it happily.
Sliding open the door Ezekiel picked up Mindy once more as he kicked off his mud-caked shoes in the front hallway that was nicely furnished and made his way down the hallway a short ways turning through an entrance into the kitchen were the lights shone full force making Mindy squint against the now unacumstomed light sorce.
Eyes still closed against the burning lights Mindy felt herself being placed down upon a hard surface. As she peered out of her lids Mindy noticed she sat upon the kitchen island her savior no where in sight.
"Lets see what we can do for your foot before we make that call," smiled the stranger (techincally neighbor) Ezekiel as he made his entrance, towering in the archway his long tawny colored hair dripping water onto his now bare chest looking past his back to see his discarded shirt she had been oblivious of when he had been wearing it but was quite prominent now that it was misplaced.
His eyes were a gorgeous golden color like liquid amber melting the cold that had hung on her skin. She stared in disbelief at his toned muscles that fit him so well and listened intently to the hint of slight Russian in his voice as he formed his words with his well shaped lips. His complexion was pale and smooth not a single scar to be seen excepted for the one jutting from his hipbone down into the waistband of his dark blue jeans stained with mud. When his eyes met hers she felt a shiver run through her body not from the elements but from realization. His features were so familiar and his voice so close but she couldn't place him. Mind working over time Mindy let her fingers tangle in the thin chain of the prism that hung about her neck, the lights playing off it as she tried desperately to remeber this astonishing mans presence in her life days, months, years past.
"You know it's not polite to stair, beautiful. So do you like what you see," laughed Ezekiel sardonically as he placed his arms upon his hips as he carried in his hands a first aid kit for Mindy's acquired wounds.
